In one embodiment, a stimulation lead for delivering electrical pulses from a pulse generator to tissue of a patient, comprises: a plurality of electrodes; a plurality of terminals; a plurality of conductors electrically coupling the plurality of electrodes with the plurality of terminals; a lead body of insulative material for enclosing the plurality of conductors; and at least one magnetic-field actuated switch for limiting MRI-induced current between the plurality of electrodes and the plurality of terminals, wherein the magnetic-field actuated switch is actuated by magnetostrictive material.

In one embodiment, an implantable drug pump device comprises: a port for transferring infusate to the device; a collapsible reservoir for storing infusate received via the port; the port extending through a housing of the device and into the reservoir; the reservoir comprising a bottom surface that moves in relation to an amount of infusate in the reservoir; the bottom surface being connected to an extensible structure; and wherein when the reservoir is at least partially emptied of infusate, the reservoir is in a substantially collapsed state with the bottom surface being disposed above an interior surface of the port and the extensible structure surrounds a portion of the port that extends into the housing.

System and method for making an implantable pump thinner

Disclosed are systems and methods which provide management of historical information associated with a medical device, such as an implantable neurostimulation pulse generator, drug pump, cardiac device, hearing enhancement device, or vision enhancement device. Such management of historical information includes storage of historical information within an associated medical device. Historical information stored within a medical device may provide a complete summary of the use, configuration, and operation of the medical device, e.g., information spanning the entire in-service life of the medical device. Historical information for which management is provided may include both static data and dynamic data. The historical information may be used in configuring the medical device, analyzing the operation of the medical device, autonomously altering operation of the medical device, etcetera.

System and method of managing medical device historical data

The invention relates to multi-stable valves and methods for their use. The multi-stable valves may include a movable physical stop and a position arm. The physical stop may be placed in the path of the arm effectively locking the valve in at least one position upon deactivation of the valve's motivating forces. The valve may be, for example, a micro valve or a microelectromechanical device. Such a valve may be used in implantable drug infusion applications and other applications having limitations on available energy. In one exemplary embodiment, the valve comprises a membrane separating two channels. The membrane may be lifted by activation of a piezo material, opening the channels for fluid flow. A physical stop may be moved into place and the piezo material deactivated, bringing to rest the arm on the physical stop. In this manner, the valve is stabilized in the open position without requiring continuous supply of energy.

Multi-stable valves for medical applications and methods for use thereof

The invention relates to an actuation system and method for an implantable infusion pump. In an example, a working fluid is placed in an actuator. Upon actuation, the working fluid is driven into a piston cylinder. Upon deactuation, the actuator draws the fluid from the cylinder through a restrictor at a rate dictated by the motivating force, fluid viscosity, and restriction. Driving of the piston may produce a bolus dosage or fill a supplemental flow chamber for subsequent delivery. The exemplary system may be configured by selecting a fluid volume and a viscosity. These, in combination, produce a prescribed fluid delivery rate (or recharge rate) and cumulative flow volume provided to a patient over a time period or in a bolus dose. The system may also be configured to limit the total dosage of a bolus injection, or the rate of a supplemental dosage. In this manner, the system is safe, preventing overdose.

Actuation system and method for an implantable infusion pump

The present invention relates to an implantable infusion pump having a refillable infusate reservoir in fluid communication with a delivery site via a flow path. This flow path includes a flow resistance. The infusion pump includes a sensing device(s), positioned relative to the flow path, to provide data regarding a flow rate along the flow path. The infusion pump effects a division of a total flow period into at least a plurality of unit dose periods, each unit dose period effecting delivery of a unit dose of infusate. The cumulative effect of delivering the total number of unit dose periods is the delivery of a desired dose over the total flow period. The present invention permits a reservoir pressure to vary over any portion of total flow period but effects a constant-pressure state over each unit dose cycle.

The invention is directed to a dose control module for manipulating the dosage of one or more pharmaceutical solutions emanating from an implantable drug infusion pump. The dose control module has a processor and other circuitry for manipulating flow valves and other dose manipulators. Effluent catheters from one or more implantable drug infusion pumps may be connected to the dose control module. The dose control module may direct the effluent pharmaceutical solution to one or more catheters. These catheters direct the pharmaceutical solutions to treatment locations. The invention is also directed to induction coil valves for use in or with the dose control module. The use of induction coils permits the dose control module to determine valve position and counteract large directional magnetic fields produced by MRIs.

Programmable dose control module

An implantable infusion pump to deliver stored infusate to a desired fluid delivery site. The pump includes a collapsible fluid chamber. The pump can include a multi-stage filtration system to filter micro-emboli as well as larger particles that are inadvertently introduced into the pump system. An external member can receive the pump and provide a medium to include additional, interactive components, e.g., a bolus port, as well as provide a versatile suture structure to enable the pump to be properly secured within an implantation site. To improve volumetric efficiency, the pump can further incorporate an outlet flow passage within a movable wall of the fluid chamber.
