A surgically implanted lead stabilizer used to stabilize leads is described herein. A lead stabilizer may include a plate that is permanently or semi-permanently surgically installed on a patient's skull under their skin via screws. The plate may hold one or more lead in place. In further embodiments, the plate has two hinged halves that may be affixed fully closed or may include a slotted arm allowing the two hinged halves to be affixed partially open. The plate may include apertures through which electrical leads may pass. Example leads may be guided through one or more surface channels on the top surface of the plate causing the leads to lay flat along the patient's skull. In an example use, a burr hole may be formed in a patient's skull with one or more leads threaded therethrough; a surgeon may open a hinged half of a plate and clamp one or more leads within one or more of the lead holes of the plate, close the hinged halves partially or entirely, affix the plate to the skull, and snap the leads into the surface channels.

Lead stabilizer for deep brain stimulation

A surgical power tool is disclosed including a power console and a handheld motor unit. The power console provides controlled power and to the handheld motor unit. Pressure sensitive switching elements on the handheld unit provide signals to the power console which are transformed into operating power to the motor unit including variable speed, speed range, forward/reverse, and safety. The handheld motor unit includes a chuck or tool receptacle and a Hall effect or other radiation field detector which response to the presence of a magnet or other radiation device as a part of the surgical tool, to identify the tool installed and provide a control signal to the motor, e.g., speed range limitation. The handheld motor unit housing is sealed and autoclavable. The housing for the handheld unit includes a flexible wall section lying over pressure sensitive switches and variable resistance whereby the surgeon's finger pressure on discrete portions of the flexible wall provide motor control including speed control, direction of operation, speed range selection and a SAFE, i.e., locked off position. Multiple handheld motor units may be simultaneously operated and controlled individually by their handheld controls or selectively by the power supply and control unit. Footswitch control is also disclosed.

Electronic controlled surgical power tool

A self-drilling, self-tapping screw for use in repairing broken bones. The screw is made of a high strength material selected from the group consisting of titanium alloys, chrome cobalt, and high strength resinous polymer. The screw has threw segments: a tip region, a body region and a head region. The tip and body regions have a retention thread formed over substantially their entire lengths. The tip has an included angle .alpha. in the range between 45.degree. and 50.degree.. The head region is specifically designed to maximize the torque it can withstand and minimize the amount of material removed in formation of the recess. The head has a generally frusto-conical shape with an included angle of between 90.degree. and 120.degree. to prevent pull through while minimizing the head's profile. The retention threads on the tip region and the body region have similar shapes and pitches with the pitch on the tip region being slightly smaller than the pitch on the body region. Each of the retention threads has a lead angle between 48.degree. and 52.degree., and a trailing angle between 98.degree. and 102.degree., as measured from the centerline of the screw.
