A method for determining the validity of a parallax image including receiving a captured two-dimensional image of a parallax image having at least three target identifiers, where at least two target identifiers are located at different depth planes in the parallax image; identifying the at least three target identifiers in the captured two-dimensional image of the parallax image and determining the spatial relationship between the at least three target identifiers in the two-dimensional image of the parallax image; comparing the spatial relationship of the at least three target identifiers in the captured two-dimensional image of the parallax image against a predetermined spatial relationship of the at least three target identifiers that indicates authenticity; and adjudicating the authenticity of the parallax image based on the degree of difference between the spatial relationship of the at least three target identifiers in the captured two-dimensional image and the predetermined spatial relationship.

A system and method for recording in real-time the duration, position, and energy of ion beams as delivered by a proton or heavy ion cancer treatment system for the purpose of calibrating the radiological system and verifying the treatment plans for various lesions. The energy of the ion beam is calculated from the beam ion depth penetration through a phantom as recorded on a two-dimensional scintillator surface which is viewed by a sensitive visible-light camera mounted in a darkened enclosure. The energy of the beam is degraded by a multi-step dual-slope chevron wedge phantom which creates, at a minimum, two bright spots in the camera's field of view. The distance between the centers of these two spots along with the dimensions and density of the multi-step dual-slope chevron wedge are used to calculate the Bragg Peak penetration depth of the ion beam.

Multicolor holographic replication by masking

A system and method for recording in real-time the duration, strength, and position of multiple collimated beams of ionizing radiation as delivered during stereotactic radiosurgery for the purpose calibrating the radiological system and verifying the treatment plans for various lesions. The beams of ionizing radiation are made visible by means of a cone or paraboloid shaped scintillator the interior of which is viewed by a sensitive visible-light camera equipped with fish-eye style optics mounted in a darkened enclosure. As the beam enters and exits the scintillator cone, two bright spots are seen in the camera's field of view. The centroids of these spots create a hodoscope and describe the path of the beam through three dimensional space. A computer connected to the camera measures the location and intensity of these spots over time during radiosurgery, calculates each beam path, and archives the spot parameters and computed beam paths to memory. Software algorithms reconstruct a mathematical description of each treatment beam that intersects the scintillator volume. In turn, these rays are used to construct a three dimensional model of the dosimetric pattern delivered within the scintillator. The operator can then determine discrepancies between the measured dosimetric pattern and the intended radiosurgery treatment or calibration pattern.
