A device and method for providing power line communications via an underground residential distribution power system is provided. One embodiment of the present invention includes a medium voltage interface device that may include a first port configured to communicate over the power line and a network interface. A first amplifier may form part of a first communication path between the first port and the network interface and be configured to amplify data signals transmitted via the first port. In addition, a second amplifier may form part of a second communication path between the first port and the network interface and be configured to amplify data signals received via the first port. In addition, the embodiment may include a diplexer forming part of the first communication path between the first amplifier and the first port and forming part of the second communication path between the second amplifier and the first port. The device may include an electro-optic converter coupled to the network interface to convert between electrical and optic data signals, wherein the network interface is configured to communicate via one or more fiber optic conductors.

Power line communications device and method

A device and method for providing power line communications via an underground residential distribution power system is provided. One embodiment of the present invention includes a power line bridge having though section and processing section. The through section may include a first and second amplifying circuit for amplifying data signals traveling in opposite directions. The processing section may include a first, a second modem, and a controller that may process commands and perform routing functions. The power line bridge may be co-located with a URD distribution transformer and provide communications to the user devices communicatively coupled to the LV power lines of the distribution transformer.

Power line communications device and method of use

The present invention provides a system and method for operating a power line communications system for communicating via an underground residential distribution power system. One embodiment of the present invention includes an aggregation point, which may be co-located with a point of presence, communicatively coupled to one or distribution points. The distribution points are communicatively coupled to one or more medium voltage interface devices. The medium voltage interface devices are communicatively coupled to one or more power line bridges via URD medium voltage power lines. The power line bridges may be co-located with a URD distribution transformer and provide communications to the user devices communicatively coupled to the LV power lines of the distribution transformer.

Power line communications system and method of operating the same

The invention describes a method and a device for communicating a signal over a power line. One embodiment may comprise a length of MV power cable that comprises a center conductor substantially surrounded by an insulator. A first concentric conductor is disposed external to the insulator over a first portion of the cable. A second concentric conductor that may have a length related to the wavelength of one or more carry frequencies of the data signals is disposed external to the insulator over a second portion of the cable and external to the insulator. A first gap is formed where the cable is exposed between the first concentric conductor and a first end of the second concentric conductor. A transceiver for communicating data signals over the MV power cable may be coupled to the first end of the second concentric conductor.

Power line coupling device and method of using the same

The invention includes a method, system, and device for communicating a data signal with a low voltage premise network. The inventive method comprises communicating the data signal with the low voltage premise network, substantially reducing attenuation of the data signal caused by one or more components on the low voltage premise network, and communicating the data signal with a power line communication device. The substantial reduction of the attenuation of the data signal may be accomplished by a device whose impedance varies with frequency. The device may exhibit a higher impedance at higher frequencies and/or a lower impedance at lower frequencies.

Facilitating communication with power line communication devices

The coupling device of the present invention includes a housing, a first fastening member attached to said housing and coupled to the power line, a second fastening member attached to the housing and coupled to the power line, an inductor providing an impedance to data transmissions between the first fastening member and the second fastening member; a first conductor having a first end electrically coupled to the first fastening member; and a second conductor having a first end electrically coupled to the second fastening member. The second ends of the first conductor and second conductor providing data signals to a connector. In addition, the housing may include a transformer secured therein for coupling power transmissions to the connector.
