Optical navigation sensors and methods are provided for use in an input device. In one embodiment, the input device comprises: (i) a button configured to in a first mode of operation of the input device receive user input when a surface of the button is pressed; (ii) an optical navigation sensor (ONS) configured to in a second mode of operation of the input device illuminate an object in proximity to the surface of the button and to sense and provide input related to motion of the object; and (iii) means for disabling input from the ONS in the first mode of operation. Other embodiments are also disclosed.

Optical navigation sensor and method

Optical navigation modules and methods of operating the same to sense relative movement between the optical navigation module and a tracking surface are provided. In one embodiment, the optical navigation module comprises: (i) a light source to illuminate at least a portion of a surface relative to which the optical navigation module is moved; (ii) an integrated circuit (IC) including a photo-detector array (PDA) to detect a light pattern propagated onto the PDA from the surface, and a signal processor to translate changes in the light pattern propagated onto the PDA into data representing motion of the optical navigation module relative to the surface; and (iii) a substrate to which the light source and IC are mounted, the substrate including an aperture in a light path between the surface and the PDA. Other embodiments are also disclosed.

Optical navigation module with capacitive sensor

Finger navigation methods, devices and systems are disclosed. In one embodiment the system comprises a light source configured to radiate a light beam towards a tactile surface. The system also comprises a photo detector module configured to sense speckle beams emitted by a target surface navigating the tactile surface in response to light hitting the target surface. The system further comprises a processor configured to track a movement of the target surface with respect to the tactile surface based on output from the photo detector module and a conductor structure for capacitive sensing of the target surface with respect to the tactile surface. The conductor structure is configured to determine a plurality of navigational functionalities based on the capacitive sensing of the target surface with respect to the tactile surface, including at least one of single click, double click, and scrolling.

Current sensor output measurement system and method

In one embodiment, an integrated circuit package includes a lead frame with a die paddle and several leads. Portions of the lead frame not having an external electrical connection may be thinned such that they may be encapsulated by an electrically insulating packaging material on the back of the lead frame. Portions of the lead frame having external electrical connections may have a thickness such that they are exposed through the packaging material. The lead frame may be covered by an electrically insulating cover to protect components on the lead frame from erroneous electrical contact or electro-static discharge (ESD) damage.

Integrated circuit package with electrically isolated leads

One embodiment relates to a user input device for tracking motion. The device includes a tracking ball and a user-accessible touching area for user manipulation of the tracking ball. First and second two-dimensional sensors are positioned at tracking heights away from the tracking ball. The first two-dimensional sensor may be positioned across the tracking ball and opposite to the user-accessible touching area. The second two-dimensional sensor may be positioned at an angle with respect to a z-axis defined as extending from the user-accessible touching area through a center of the tracking ball to the first two-dimensional sensor. Other embodiments, aspects and features are also disclosed.

Method and apparatus for quasi-3D tracking using 2D optical motion sensors

A packaging structure and method are provided for packaging an optoelectronic device. Generally, the packaging structure includes: (i) an integrated circuit (IC) package to which the optoelectronic device is affixed; (ii) an optical plug mounted to the IC package, the optical plug positioned relative to the optoelectronic device to direct light to or from the optoelectronic device, the optical plug having an interior optical surface closest to the optoelectronic device that does not make physical contact with either the optoelectronic device or the IC package. Preferably, the packaging structure can further include air or an index matching fluid in a gap between the interior optical surface and the optoelectronic device or IC package. More preferably, both the IC package and the optical plug include features to facilitate alignment and mounting of the optical plug to the IC package during assembly. Other embodiments are also disclosed.

System and method for mounting an optical component to an integrated circuit package

The present invention discloses an optic system for providing illumination and imaging functions in an optical navigation system. Generally, the optic system includes a unitary optic component having an illumination lens and at least one prism to project a collimated beam of light from a light source in the optical navigation system onto a surface, and an imaging lens to image at least a portion of the illuminated surface to an array of photosensitive elements. In one embodiment, optic system further includes an aperture component having a precision aperture, the aperture component configured to locate the precision aperture between the imaging lens of the unitary optic component and the array of photosensitive elements in a path of light reflected from the portion of the illuminated surface to the array of photosensitive elements. Other embodiments are also described.

System and method for illuminating and imaging a surface for an optical navigation system

One embodiment relates to a laser positioning device for sensing relative movement between a data input device and a surface by determining displacement of image features in a succession of images of the surface. The device forms a single integrated package, which includes a planar substrate and a transparent encapsulant that also embodies a collimating lens. Both a coherent light source and a sensor array and associated circuitry are configured on the planar substrate. Another embodiment relates to a method of sensing relative movement between a data input device and a surface. Coherent light is emitted from a laser and collimated so as to form a collimated illumination beam with a predetermined diameter, D, and a substantially uniform phase front. A speckle pattern is generated by impingement of the collimated illumination beam on the surface and detected by a sensor array. Other embodiments are also disclosed.

Speckle navigation system

A test system and method are provided for testing in parallel radiant output of multiple light emitting devices. Generally, the method involves: (i) providing a system having a master, calibrated power meter (CPM), a source transfer standard (STS), and multiple secondary, test site power meters (TSPMs); (ii) determining a relationship between electrical power supplied to the STS and a radiant output therefrom as measured by the CPM; (iii) calibrating the TSPMs using the STS and the relationship between the power supplied to the STS and the radiant output therefrom as determined by the CPM; and (iv) positioning the devices undergoing test on a fixture of the test system and positioning the fixture relative to the TSPMs to test radiant outputs of the devices. Preferably, the TSPMs are calibrated by exposing each to the STS at a known power, determining a difference between the radiant output measured by the CPM and TSPM, using this difference as an offset that is added to the a signal from the TSPM to provide a corrected radiant output for the device under test. Other embodiments are also disclosed.

Multi-site optical power calibration system and method

In one embodiment, an integrated circuit package includes a lead frame with a die paddle and several leads. One embodiment relates to an optical navigation device. The device includes a lead frame having reference features, a laser, a detector array, and an optical component having alignment features. The laser is attached to the lead frame and positioned in reference to the reference features of the lead frame. The detector array is attached to the lead frame and positioned in reference to the reference features of the lead frame. The optical component is coupled to the lead frame so that its alignment features register to the reference features of the lead frame. In this way, the molded optical component is passively aligned to the laser and the detector array. Other embodiments are also disclosed.
