A progressive addition lens design device for designing progressive addition lenses to permit a patient to experience a variety of distance vision fields and reading vision fields. The device includes a frame adapted to hold in place in front of each of a patient's eyes three lens mounts, each lens mounts being adapted for adjustment in rotation and side-to-side translation. A third lens displaying the patient's base prescription mounted in one of the lens. A first and second lens is mounted in the other two lens mounts. The first and second lenses, each have a transition zone and a power ramp zone and they have complementary surfaces so that when stacked together they create a standard progressive addition lens with a distance vision field, a reading vision field and transition region. When the first and second lenses are moved relative to each other the locations of the distance vision field, the reading vision field and the transition region are adjusted allowing the patient to experience a variety of distance vision fields, reading vision fields, and transition regions.

Device and process for progressive addition lens design

A super-resolution telescope. A target is illuminated with at least three laser beams, each beam having a slightly different frequency so as to produce an illumination pattern comprised of several sets of straight interference fringes which sweep across the target. The frequencies of the illumination beams are chosen so that each pair of beams has a unique beat frequency, and the corresponding fringe pattern for each pair sweeps over the target at a unique speed. By collecting a series of images, and demodulating them at the various beat frequencies, the downshifted spatial frequencies can be identified, correctly up-shifted, and fitted together with a set of special Fourier transform based algorithms to reconstruct high-resolution images. Applicants have performed laboratory experiments that this invention can provide resolution substantially better than diffraction limited resolution.

Super resolution telescope

A low inventory method of making eyeglasses. Two lens elements having special complementary surfaces are provided. These lens elements can be positioned relative to each other to provide wide ranges of focus correction and astigmatism correction. Various preferred embodiments of the invention are described. In one embodiment the required inventory is only identical sets of two complementary lenses for providing correction for almost all needed eye correction for a typical population. In this embodiment, the lens units are first adjusted relative to each other to provide a desired focusing power. Astigmatism may be corrected by a small adjustment in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction followed by a rotation of the two lenses about the axis of the two lenses. When the adjustments have been made the two lenses are fixed with respect to each other and installed in eyeglass frames. Cutting to the shape of the eyeglass frames can occur either before or after the fixing.

Low inventory method of making eyeglasses

A large communication network suitable for nationwide or worldwide utilization. The present invention overthrows the conventional packet switching technologies with an all-optical network. The invention uses tunable laser sources to generate large number of highly stable narrow-band optical signals, each serving as a communication channel. With packet processing replaced by all-optical channels, the network become highly secure and scalable while harnessing the virtually unlimited capacity of fiber-optic. A large number of nodes (called area code nodes) are connected with all-fiber-optic links with all-optical switches. A routing algorithm provides one or more communication links from each area code node to every other area code node so that information never has to change carrier wavelength as it travels the network. Each area code node contains circuits that are provided to connect individual users to the network.

Optically switched communication network

A particle detection system uses a reflective optic comprising a curved surface to detect high angle scattered light generated by a particle in a liquid medium, when a laser beam is incident on the particle. When the particles transit the laser beam, light is scattered in all directions and is described by MIE scattering theory for particles about the size of the wavelength of light and larger or Rayleigh Scattering when the particles are smaller than the wavelength of light. By using the reflective optic, the scattered light can be detected over angles that are greater than normally obtainable.

Systems and methods for a multiple angle light scattering (MALS) instrument having two-dimensional detector array

A system and method for imaging far away fast moving objects such as satellites in low earth orbit. The object to be imaged is illuminated simultaneously with a composite beam comprised of a large number of separate laser beams from a large number of laser sources each from a separate position with each of the separate laser beams shifted in frequency with respect to each other beam so as to produce a large number of beat frequencies in the composite beam. The positions of the laser sources are changed rapidly during an illumination period of a few seconds. Light reflected from the object is collected in a large number of light buckets and information defining the intensity of the collected reflected light as a function of time is stored. The positions and frequencies of each of the laser sources are also recorded and stored as a function of time. The stored information defining the intensity of the collected reflected light is analyzed by one or more computer processors utilizing special algorithms to produce a image of the object.

A pair of adjustable focus eyeglasses having two lens units with at least one of the lens units having at least two lens elements. A mechanism is provided to pivot, about a pivot location outside each of the two lens elements, the position of at least one of the two lens elements relative to the other lens element in an angular direction generally perpendicular to a viewing direction. Specially designed surfaces are chosen such that small angular adjustments of the relative positions of the two lenses around a common pivot position in angular directions perpendicular or approximately perpendicular to a viewing direction results in changes in the combined focus of the two lenses of the lens unit. Preferred embodiments include two lens units with the lens system defining pairs of adjustable focus eyeglasses.

Adjustable focus eyeglasses with pivot adjustments

A particle detection system uses illumination incident at an angle to detect particles in a liquid such as water. By using illumination incident at an angle, the scattered light can be measured through a range of angles that are greater than the measured range of angles produced when the illumination is incident at a normal angle, when using the same detector. For example, the light can be measured through an angle that is twice that produced with illumination incident at a normal angle.

Systems and methods for detecting scattered light from a particle using illumination incident at an angle

An adjustable focus lens system with at least two lens units and a mechanism to adjust the position of at least one of the two lens units relative to the other in a direction generally perpendicular to a viewing direction. The first of the two lens units has a specially designed surface and the second of the two lens units has a surface that is substantially complementary to the surface of the first lens unit. In preferred embodiments a first adjustable focus lens system with two lens units is mounted in a frame along with a second similar adjustable focus lens system to provide a pair of eyeglasses with adjustable focus.

Adjustable focus lens system

A lens unit with two lens elements each having special surfaces such that an adjustment of the position of one of the two lens elements relative to the other in a direction generally perpendicular to a viewing direction changes the focusing power of the lens unit. In preferred embodiments two lens units are mounted in a frame to provide eyeglasses with adjustable focus. Several frame designs are described. Some designs provide for movement side to side movement of the lens elements relative to each other. In other designs the relative motion is up and down. A simple technique is a thumbscrew adjustment that is operated by the wearer. Another design is based on finger force against a friction force. In some preferred embodiments separate frames holding the lens elements pivot about pivot points on the earpiece of a support frame. In other designs two rear lens elements are mounted in a support frame and the front lens elements are mounted in a separate frame that pivots about a point on the earpiece of the support frame. Another design includes a torsion bar assures that the movements of each lens element in one of the lens units is the same as the movements of the lens elements in the other lens unit. Techniques for automatic focusing of the lenses are also disclosed. Techniques for automatic focusing of the lenses are also disclosed.

Adjustable focus lenses

Adjustable focus eyeglasses with two lens units, each lens unit having two lens elements. The eyeglasses are focused by adjusting the position of at least one of the two lens elements relative to the other in a direction generally perpendicular to a viewing direction. The relative motion can be linear or pivotal about a pivot location outside the lenses. Applicant provides basic general equations defining the thickness profiles for the lenses and the solutions to these equations are: whereA for one of the lenses elements is &#x2212;A for the other lens element in each lens unit andF(v), F1(u,v), F2(v), F3(v), F4(v)are any functions over the area of the lenses for which derivatives up to at least third order are continuous. At least one of F1(u,v), F2(v), F3(v), F4(v) is non-zero.

Adjustable focus eyeglasses

A lens unit with at least two lens elements. The first of the two lens elements has two surfaces providing a special varying lens thickness as a function of position across the lens surfaces, and the second of the two lens elements has two surfaces providing a varying lens thickness that is substantially complementary to the varying thickness of the first lens element. The designs of the surfaces are chosen such that small adjustments of the relative positions of the two lenses in a first direction predominantly perpendicular to the viewing direction results in changes in the combined focus of the two lenses of each lens unit. Astigmatism is corrected by a small adjustment in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction followed by a rotation of the two lenses about the axis of the two lenses. Prescription lenses and method of making

Method and device for digital x-ray tomosynthesis. Tomographic and/or three-dimensional images of an object are obtained with an x-ray source and a digital x-ray image sensor. The source, object and sensor are positioned relative to each other and attenuation data is obtained for a large number of rays of x-radiation through the object. A special algorithm is provided to convert the data into images. To calculate the images the algorithm uses iterative processes with a least squares type technique but with generalized (as opposed to specific) functions. The algorithm solves for the functions which are the images. Preferred embodiments include a system having an x-ray point source with a cone of diverging x-rays, a two-dimensional digital x-ray image sensor, two linear translation stages to independently move both the x-ray source and the digital x-ray image sensor, two rotation mechanisms to rotate the two linear translation stages, a microprocessor to control the data acquisition, and a computer programmed with a special algorithm to calculate the tomographic images. A plurality of sets of digital data (representing x-ray algorithm images of an object) are acquired by the digital x-ray image sensor, with the x-ray source and the digital x-ray image sensor located at different positions and angles relative to the object. The digital data representing the x-ray attenuation images is stored in the computer. Special mathematical algorithms then compute multiple images of the object using the acquired digital data. These images could include multiple tomographic images, a three-dimensional image, or a multiple three-dimensional images.
