A method of treating and/or preventing symptoms of Rett syndrome (RTT) in a patient such as a patient previously diagnosed with Rett syndrome, by administering an effective dose of a 5-HT, 5-HT, 5-HTor sigma-1 receptor agonist (e.g., fenfluramine or its pharmaceutically acceptable salt) to that patient. RTT patients are treated at a preferred dose of less than about 1.0 mg/kg/day and may be administered as fenfluramine in an amount of between 0.2 to 0.8 mg/kg/day, to a maximum of 30 mg/day in a liquid oral dose.
