Methods and systems for signal processing an audio signal in a hearing device to detect when feedback path change occurs and controlling an adaptive feedback canceler to remove the feedback are provided. The hearing device includes a receiver and a microphone. An exemplary method includes detecting whether a tonal signal is caused by a feedback path change by estimating a product of a subband error signal and a subband output signal generated in response to a subband audio input signal; estimating a fast metric based on the estimated product and estimating a slow metric; and applying or maintaining an adaptation rate to the adaptive feedback canceler of the hearing device, wherein the adaptation rate applied or maintained is selected based upon a value of the difference between the fast and slow metrics compared to a threshold value.

Detection of feedback path change

Embodiments generally relate to a signal processing device for on ear detection for a headset. The device comprises a first microphone input for receiving a microphone signal from a first microphone, the first microphone being configured to be positioned inside an ear of a user when the user is wearing the headset; a second microphone input for receiving a microphone signal from a second microphone, the second microphone being configured to be positioned outside the ear of the user when the user is wearing the headset; and a processor. The processor is configured to receive microphone signals from each of the first microphone input and the second microphone input; pass the microphone signals through a first filter to remove low frequency components, producing first filtered microphone signals; combine the first filtered microphone signals to determine a first on ear status metric; pass the microphone signals through a second filter to remove high frequency components, producing second filtered microphone signals; combine the second filtered microphone signals to determine a second on ear status metric; and combine the first on ear status metric with the second on ear status metric to determine the on ear status of the headset.

Systems and methods for on ear detection of headsets

Described embodiments generally relate to a signal processing device for on ear detection for an earbud. The device comprises a first microphone input for receiving a microphone signal from a first microphone, the first microphone being configured to be positioned within an ear of a user when the earbud is being worn; a second microphone input for receiving a microphone signal from a second microphone, the second microphone being configured to be positioned outside the ear of the user when the earbud is being worn; a signal generator configured to generate a signal for acoustic playback from a speaker configured to be positioned within the earbud; and a processor. The processor is configured to receive at least one first microphone signal from each of the first microphone input and the second microphone input, and compare the first microphone signals to determine the on ear status of the earbud; determine that the on ear status of the earbud cannot be sufficiently determined, generate a signal for acoustic playback from the speaker, receive a second microphone signal from the first microphone input, and compare the second microphone signal to the generated signal to determine the on ear status of the earbud.

An apparatus of reducing feedback noise in an acoustic system, the apparatus comprising: a first input for receiving a first signal derived from a first microphone associated with a first channel, the first signal comprising a first set of frequency sub-bands; a second input for receiving a second signal derived from a second microphone associated with a second channel, the second signal comprising second set of frequency sub-bands, the first and second sets of frequency sub-bands having matching frequency ranges, each frequency sub-band of the first and second sets of frequency sub-bands having a frequency of greater than a threshold frequency; and one or more processors configured to: determining feedback at a first speaker associated with the first channel; and responsive to determining feedback, mix each of the first set of frequency sub-bands with a corresponding one of the second set of frequency sub-bands to generate a mixed output signal comprising a mixed set of frequency sub-bands; wherein the mixing is performed so as to minimize the output power in each of the mixed set of frequency sub-bands whilst maintaining a stereo effect level difference in the mixed signal between the first and second signals within a level difference threshold range.

Methods, systems and apparatus for improved feedback control

Embodiments of the invention determine a speech estimate using a bone conduction sensor or accelerometer, without employing voice activity detection gating of speech estimation. Speech estimation is based either exclusively on the bone conduction signal, or is performed in combination with a microphone signal. The speech estimate is then used to condition an output signal of the microphone. There are multiple use cases for speech processing in audio devices.

Earbud speech estimation

A method of equalising sound in a headset comprising an internal microphone configured to generate a first audio signal, an external microphone configured to generate a second audio signal, a speaker, and one or more processors coupled between the speaker, the external microphone, and the internal microphone, the method comprising: while the headset is worn by a user: determining a first audio transfer function between the first audio signal and the second audio signal in the presence of sound at the external microphone; and determining a second audio transfer function between a speaker input signal and the first audio signal with the speaker being driven by the speaker input signal; determining an electrical transfer function of the one or more processors; determining a closed-ear transfer function based on the first audio transfer function, the second audio transfer function and the electrical transfer function; and equalising the first audio signal based on a comparison between the closed-ear transfer function and an open-ear transfer function to generate an equalised first audio signal.

Compensation of own voice occlusion

Embodiments generally relate to a device comprising at least one signal input component for receiving a bone conducted signal from a bone conducted signal sensor of an earbud; memory storing executable code; and a processor configured to access the memory and execute the executable code. Executing the executable code causes the processor to: receive the bone conducted signal; determine at least one speech metric for the received bone conducted signal, wherein the speech metric is based on the input level of the bone conducted signal and a noise estimate for the bone conducted signal; based at least in part on comparing the speech metric to a speech metric threshold, update a speech certainty indicator indicative of a level of certainty of a presence of speech in the bone conducted signal; update at least one signal attenuation factor based on the speech certainty indicator; and generate an updated speech level estimate output by applying the signal attenuation factor to a speech level estimate.

Methods and systems for speech detection

A method of equalising sound in a headset comprising an internal microphone configured to generate a first audio signal, an external microphone configured to generate a second audio signal, a speaker, and one or more processors coupled between the speaker the external microphone, and the internal microphone, the method comprising: while the headset is worn by a user: determining a first audio transfer function between the first audio signal and the second audio signal in the presence of sound at the external microphone; and determining a second audio transfer function between a speaker input signal and the first audio signal with the speaker being driven by the speaker input signal; determining an electrical transfer function of the one or more processors; determining a closed-ear transfer function based on the first audio transfer function, the second audio transfer function and the electrical transfer function; and equalising the first audio signal based on a comparison between the closed-ear transfer function and an open-ear transfer function to generate an equalised first audio signal.

A signal processing device for configurable voice activity detection. A plurality of inputs receive respective microphone signals. A microphone signal router configurably routes the microphone signals. At least one voice activity detection module receives a pair of microphone signals from the router, and produces a respective output indicating whether speech or noise has been detected by the voice activity detection module in the respective pair of microphone signals. A voice activity decision module receives the output of the voice activity detection module(s) and determines whether voice activity exists in the microphone signals. A spatial noise reduction module receives microphone signals from the microphone signal router, and performs adaptive beamforming based in part upon the output of the voice activity decision module, and outputs a spatial noise reduced output. The device permits simple configurability to deliver spatial noise reduction for one of a wide variety of headset form factors.

Flexible voice capture front-end for headsets

A device for noise estimation comprises a first microphone capturing a nominal speech signal, and a second microphone capturing a nominal noise signal. A generalized sidelobe canceller of the device applies spatial noise reduction, and comprises a blocking matrix filter to adaptively process the nominal speech signal to produce a speech cancellation signal, a node for subtracting the speech cancellation signal from the nominal noise signal to produce a noise reference signal, a noise cancellation filter to adaptively filter the noise reference signal to produce a noise cancellation signal; and a node for subtracting the noise cancellation signal from the nominal speech signal to produce a speech reference signal. An adaptive noise estimation module of the device comprises a node for subtracting the noise reference signal from the speech reference signal and outputting a difference signal; a smoothing filter for filtering the difference signal to produce a long term difference signal; and a node for adding the long term difference signal to the noise reference signal to produce an enhanced noise reference signal.
