An approach for optimizing server-based loads between data centers. The approach receives data from a hardware abstraction layer (HAL) associated with servers in a plurality of data centers. The approach filters the data associated with a portion of the data centers having the highest power usage and thermal state conditions. The approach aggregates the filtered data into performance data groups based on association with a data center. The approach creates two-ratio statistics of the aggregated groups. The approach generates a data center score based on the two-ratio statistics. The approach selects data center sites with the lowest scores. The approach initiates a request to transfer server-based loads from the servers associated with the filtered data to the data center sites with the lowest scores.

A method for data synchronization includes identifying a replaced component amongst a plurality of components in a storage system, establishing a quorum amongst the plurality of components in the storage system, and updating vital product data stored on the replaced component based at least in part on the quorum established amongst the plurality of components in the storage system. A computer program product for data synchronization includes one or more computer readable storage media and program instructions collectively stored on the one or more computer readable storage media. The program instructions include program instructions to perform the foregoing method. A system includes a processor and logic integrated with the processor, executable by the processor, or integrated with and executable by the processor. The logic is configured to perform the foregoing method.

A storage device includes a bottom surface, a plurality of sides, and a top surface. The top surface integrally couples to the plurality of sides. The bottom surface, the plurality of sides, and the top surface form an outer surface of the storage device. The top surface, when coupled to the bottom surface, contacts one or more internal components of the storage device. The top surface comprises a plurality of finned ridges and a smooth continuous mounting surface. The plurality of finned ridges protrudes away from the outer surface of the storage device. The plurality of finned ridges is formed to direct heat away from the storage device. The smooth continuous mounting surface is configured to accept attachment of a thermal dissipation module.

A computer-implemented method, according to one embodiment, includes: receiving a write request at a storage system which includes more than one storage device, determining a storage location for data included in the write request, and determining a storage location for parity information corresponding to the data included in the write request. A first copy of the data included in the write request is sent to a first storage device which corresponds to the storage location for the data included in the write request. Moreover, a second copy of the data included in the write request is sent to a second storage device which corresponds to the storage location for the parity information. One or more instructions to compute the parity information via a decentralized communication link with the remaining storage devices are sent to the second storage device. The first storage device is different than the second storage device.

A technique for operating a power subsystem includes determining a respective power status of power devices in the power subsystem. The power devices include a first power device and a second power device that derives power from the first power device. A technique for monitoring a passive element in a system includes determining, by a monitor, power supplied by a power supply coupled to the passive element and power consumed by a load coupled to the passive element. The monitor then determines power dissipated by the passive element based on the power supplied by the power supply and the power consumed by the load. The monitor initiates shut down of the power supply when the power dissipated by the passive element exceeds a threshold.

Dust guard structure

A mechanism is provided in a data processing system for transferring failure data from a processing unit to a management device. In response to detecting a failure of the processing unit, a computing device within the data processing system gathers failure information from machine check registers of the processing unit. The computing device generates a time stamp command communicating a time and date of the failure information and sends the time stamp command to the management device. The computing device generates at least one error data command communicating error data derived from the failure information and sends the at least one error data command to the management device.

An apparatus for a dust guard structure includes a particle guard coupled to a top surface of a circuit board, wherein the particle guard is located along a first side of the circuit board between an edge of the circuit board and a first electronic component. The dust guard structure further includes the first electronic component electrically coupled to the circuit board via one or more electronic connections, wherein a height of the particle guard is greater than a height of each of the one or more electrical connections of the first electronic component. The dust guard structure further includes the first side of the circuit board being introduced to an external airflow.

A system and methodology for effectively managing, without interrupting the overall system, the power and control logic of the system during the removal, insertion and programming of programmable components that control the logic. The system and methodology detect a removal of a first programmable component from its socket and switch at least one control signal from being driven by the first programmable component to being driven by the second programmable component. A method of backing up data from an electronic system is disclosed. The method may include detecting an operating mode of the battery subsystem that is a maintenance discharge cycle operating mode and in response, calculating, using a first algorithm, the available battery capacity relative to a minimum battery capacity. The method may also include detecting an operating mode of the battery subsystem that is a normal operating mode and in response, calculating, using a second algorithm, the available battery capacity relative to a maximum battery capacity. The method may also include comparing the available battery capacity to a battery capacity sufficient to complete a backup operation, detecting a backup trigger condition and in response to the backup trigger condition and the available battery capacity being sufficient to complete a backup operation, backing up, data from the electronic system.

An approach for searching within previous search results for new search results is provided. In one aspect, a first computer receives first search contexts from a second computer. The first search contexts include parameters including characteristics of elements of second search contexts and parameters including weight of importance to the user that elements of the second search contexts includes the characteristics of the first search contexts. In addition, the first computer searches for the characteristics of the elements of the second search contexts in a repository. In another aspect, the first computer determines a match between the characteristics of the elements of the second search contexts and characteristics elements of the first search contexts, and wherein the first computer ranks a list of the new search results based on the determination.
