Disclosed is a photochromic plastic ophthalmic lenses having polymer matrices with an effective amount of at least one photochromic agent distributed therein, applied thereto or associated therewith and at least one ophthalmic filtering dye applied thereto, associated therewith or distributed therein the lens. A group of the filter lenses have dominant wavelengthes between 570 and 605 nm and color purity between 50% and 75%. Another lens product of the present invention is particularly suitable for patients suffering from retinitis pigmentosa. The lenses of the present invention are particularly suitable for individuals bothered by strong or variable illumination intensity.

Ophthalmic filter materials

The invention relates to an athermal optical waveguide grating device. The optical waveguide grating device includes a fiber Bragg grating secured and bonded to a supporting substrate member with a low thermal expansion securing glass, such as a copper alumino silicate glass. The inventive devices and method of making the devices include the utilization of intermediate solid insert members between the fiber and a negative thermal expansion substrate.

The lens is produced by firing a silver halide-containing, photochromic glass lens in a hydrogen-containing atmosphere within a temperature range of 465&deg; C. to 495&deg; C. for less than 20 minutes.

The device comprises a substrate and an optical waveguide component affixed to the substrate with a glass frit fusion seal formed and locked within a recessed void in the substrate, the glass frit fusion seal being the fused product of a low melting glass frit. The recessed void in the substrate includes a region for receiving the optical waveguide component and an intersecting region that secures the placement of the glass frit fusion seal. The optical waveguide component is affixed to the substrate in order to control temperature varying optical properties of the component.

This invention is directed to the production of a silver halide-containing glass article essentially free from silver halide crystals exhibiting a bright yellow coloration which strongly attenuates the transmission of ultraviolet radiation and radiation having a wavelength up to about 450 nm, said article having an integral reduced surface layer thereon, the depth of that layer being sufficient to effectively prevent the transmission therethrough of ultraviolet radiation and radiation having a wavelength up to about 450 nm.

Method of making non-photochromic optical filter glasses

An apparatus for reducing the amount of electrical power needed to attain light-off of a catalytic converter, particularly a catalytic converter for internal combustion engines. In addition to a resistance-heated catalytic converter, means are provided for varying the air/fuel ratio in the exhaust gas system for the purpose of reducing the ignition temperature of the exhaust gas stream, thereby further reducing the electrical energy required to attain light-off during cold-start.
