Methods and apparatus are provided for secure communication techniques in a communication system. The system can include a first device which communicates with a second device over a channel. A security association can be established during a first session between the devices via an asymmetric key exchange. The security association comprises a Traffic Encryption Key (TEK) and a first state vector. The TEK comprises a shared, secret symmetric key. The security association is stored in each of the devices for use during a second session between the devices to expedite security association establishment during call set-up of the second session. The security association can be associated with the second device in the first device, and with the first device in the second device. An updated state vector can be generated at the first device. A second session can be established between the first device and the second device by using the TEKs from the first session and the updated state vector. The security association can be used to encrypt voice packets being sent from the first device to the second device. The security association and updated state vector can then be used to decrypt the encrypted voice packets received by the second device from the first device.

In a packet network, message packets (130) are comprised of vacant or unused bits for future system enhancements or for remedying unknown design oversights or utilizing vacant portions of fixed length data packets. Furthermore, message packets (130) comprise a message type identifier distinguishing message architecture. A transmit and receive packet network node (100) maintains an unused bit catalog (125) listing vacant or unused bits of particular message packet types. When a message packet type having vacant or unused bits is detected propagating through the packet network, background data is retrieved from a transmit background data queue (115) and interleaved into such message packets to form enriched message packets (130') for transportation through the packet network. Receiving packet network nodes (100) detect enriched message packets (130') and extract and buffer the background data. A lower data-rate background data transfer mechanism is maintained without impacting the performance of the existing packet network.

This results in voice gaps between an on-time synthesized voice data (602'') and a subsequent delayed synthesized voice data (603''). Voice gaps are temporarily patched with voice prediction samples and end-to-end timing is adjusted to minimized prediction samples. When packets are lost in the network, prediction packets are substituted and annunciated to a user until valid packets are received.

A fast pattern correlator and method comprising received bitstream data blocks split into estimation blocks and correlation blocks. Correlation blocks are extracted and compared to an expected pattern using a correlation part starting location estimator and correlator. The number of bit errors resulting is compared to a predetermined maximum in a threshold comparator. Extracting the correlation blocks includes indexing consecutive estimation blocks using an estimation part correlation table and predicting consistent correlation block starting locations. The correlation blocks are correlated with the expected pattern to produce an exclusive-OR result, which, used with a bit-error table, can be used to find a number of bit errors in the correlation.
