Metal substrates comprising a colored coating and/or a protective coating disposed on at least a surface of the substrate. The colored coating can include a metal oxide coating integrally bonded to the terminal and produced by heat tinting or a titanium nitride containing material. The protective coating is derived from a material comprising one or more of aluminum oxide, silicon oxide, a superhydrophobic material, wherein the protective coating has a Scratch Resistance of at least about F, as determined by ASTM D336. Methods of making and using the coated metal substrates are also disclosed.

A method of making an LED device and an LED device using a high-silica, fully-sintered glass substrate is provided. The high-silica substrate is at least 99% silica and is thin, such as less than 200 &#x3bc;m in thickness. A phosphor containing layer is deposited on to the substrate and is laser sintered on the substrate such that a portion of the sintered phosphor layer embeds in the material of the substrate.

Method of forming light emitting diode with high-silica substrate

A gas sensor utilizing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is disclosed. The sensor can include a patch antenna, a feed line, and a stub line. The stub line can include a carbon nanotube (CNT) thin-film layer for gas detection. The CNTs can be functionalized to detect one or more analytes with specificity designed to detect, for example, environmental air contaminants, hazardous gases, or explosives. The sensor can provide extremely sensitive gas detection by monitoring the shift in resonant frequency of the sensor circuit resulting from the adsorption of the analyte by the CNT thin-film layer. The sensor can be manufactured using inkjet printing technologies to reduce costs. The integration of an efficient antenna on the same substrate as the sensor enables wireless applications of the sensor without additional components, for wireless standoff chemical sensing applications including, for example, defense, industrial monitoring, environmental sensing, automobile exhaust analysis, and healthcare applications.

Highly sensitive standoff gas sensing using carbon nanotubes and integrated wireless devices

Compositions and methods are described for transparent glass composite having nanoparticles therein that scintillate in the presence of nuclear radiation, particularly gamma rays, but also x-rays, alpha particles, beta particles, and neutrons. The transparent glass composites can be prepared by a melt/cool process to produce the transparent glass composite. The wavelength of light emitted by the transparent glass composite can be tailored based on the materials used to make the glass composite. A detector that utilizes the transparent glass composite can measure nuclear radiation from numerous sources.

Transparent glass scintillators, methods of making same and devices using same

Various embodiments of the present invention provide a method of detecting inaccessible radiation sources by measuring corresponding ions and excited molecules created by radiation, using LIDAR technology. The LIDAR system of the present invention employs a pulsed laser transmitter, a telescope receiver, and associated control and acquisition systems. Light propagates out from the laser transmitted and is directed into the volume surrounding the radioactive source, or the 'ion cloud.' The ion cloud absorbs the transmitted light, which induces the non-fluorescing ions to fluoresce. Light from the ion cloud is then backscattered and the telescope receiver subsequently collects the photons from the backscattered light. The intensity of the fluorescence (determined by the photon count) is measured, which provides an indication of the number density of the ionized atoms. Algorithms can then be used to relate the measured ionization rates to the source activity.

Remote detection of radiation

The present invention provides surface coated phosphors useful in field emission displays and vacuum fluorescent displays. The surface coated phosphor comprises a thin coating of rare earth oxide, e.g., yttrium oxide, disposed on an uncoated phosphor such as a sulfide phosphor. The present invention further provides a process for preparing a surface coated phosphor comprising contacting the uncoated phosphor with a rare earth hydroxide gel solution to obtain a rare earth hydroxide gel coated phosphor, drying the gel coated phosphor to remove solvent residues, and heat treating the dried rare earth hydroxide gel coated phosphor. The surface coated phosphors of the present invention have improved cathodoluminescence efficiency, coulombic aging resistance, chemical, and/or oxidative stability.

Rare earth oxide coated phosphors

Provided herein are novel phosphors useful in the manufacture of white light emitting diodes. The phosphors provided by the invention are described by the formulae:MSSe: Bin which x, and y are each independently any value between about 0 and about 1, subject to the proviso that the sum of x and y is equal to any number in the range of between about 0.75 and about 1.25; M is at least one of Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Zn, excepting Zn alone; and wherein the activator(s) B comprises one or more elements selected from the group consisting of: Eu, Ce, Cu, Ag, Al, Tb, Sb, Bi, K, Na, Cl, F, Br, I, Mg, Pr, and Mn, including mixtures comprising any two, any three, any four, any five, any six, any seven, or more of these elements in any proportion, and wherein the elements in these mixtures may each independently be present in any amount between 0.0001% and about 10% in mole percent based on the total molar weight of said composition. Standard techniques used in conventional phosphor deposition for the manufacture of light emitting diodes which comprise phosphors according to the invention may be employed to produce LED's having a white light output.

Light emitting device having selenium-based fluorescent phosphor

Provided herein are novel phosphors useful in the manufacture of white light emitting diodes. The phosphors provided by the invention are described by the formulae:MA(SSe):Band/orMA(SSe):Bin which x, and y are each independently any value between 0 and 1, including 0 and 1 subject to the proviso that the sum of x and y is equal to any number in the range of between about 0.75 and about 1.25; M is at least one of Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Zn; A is at least one of Al, Ga, In, Y, La, and Gd; and wherein the activator(s), B, comprises one or more element selected from the group consisting of: Eu, Ce, Cu, Ag, Al, Tb, Cl, Br, F, I, Mg, Pr, K, Na, and Mn, including mixtures comprising any two, any three, any four, any five, any six, any seven, or more of these elements in any proportion, and wherein the elements in these mixtures may each independently be present in any amount between 0.0001% and about 10% in mole percent based on the total molar weight of said composition. Standard techniques used in phosphor deposition for the manufacture of light emitting diodes which comprise phosphors may be employed to produce LED's having a white light output when the phosphors of the invention are utilized.

Rare earth oxide coated phosphors and a process for preparing the same

A low voltage tunnel thin film electroluminescent device (10) that comprises a conductive layer (13) that acts as a source of electrons, a first thin barrier layer (14) deposited on the conductive layer, a luminescent layer (16) deposited on the barrier layer a second thin barrier layer (14) deposited on said luminescent layer, and an electrode (18) deposited on the second barrier layer. Electrons from the source layer tunnel through the thin tunnel barrier layer into the luminescent layer which is doped with luminescent centers. The electrons that tunnel through the thin tunnel barrier layer into the luminescent layer have kinetic energy that is within a narrow energy distribution. The material comprising the first barrier layer is preferably chosen to have a positive conduction band off-set (22) with respect to the conductive layer and the material comprising the luminescent layer is chosen to have a negative conduction band off-set (24) with respect to said first barrier layer, wherein the negative conduction band off-set is greater than the positive conduction band off-set. Further, the different material layers are preferably lattice-matched and epitaxially grown in order to make the device more efficient.
