Systems and methods are described for donor access node (DeNB) selection at a relay access node (AN). A plurality of DeNBs may be identified, the DeNBs being located within a radio range of the relay AN. A metric may be calculated at the relay AN and used by the relay AN to select multiple, preferred DeNBs from the plurality of DeNBs. The relay AN may simultaneously request a connection to each of the multiple, preferred DeNBs. Data signals may be combined for transport at the relay AN and sent to end-user wireless devices, the multiple, preferred DeNBs, or both.

Systems and methods for Donor Access Node selection

Disclosed is a method and system for sharing a remote radio head (RRH) between multiple cell sites. An RRH is be coupled with at least two separately located cell sites, so as to interface concurrently between one such cell site and a baseband unit and between the other such cell site and the baseband unit. Further, a baseband unit may thus also serve the multiple cell sites, by being coupled with the RRH that serves the multiple cell sites.

Method and system for sharing remote radio head between cell sites

In a particular embodiment, a method is provided for operating a wireless communication system allocated a plurality of frequency resource segments. The method provides receiving communications for wireless transfer from the wireless communication system using a first antenna system and a second antenna system, wherein a gain of the first antenna system is higher than a gain of the second antenna system. The method further provides determining a first subset of the communications that should be transferred over the first antenna system and transferring the first subset of the communications from the first antenna system using a first portion of the frequency resource segments. The method further provides transferring the remaining communications from the second antenna system using frequency resource segments other than the first portion of the frequency resource segments.

The switching device is associated with a remote radio unit (RRU) and an antenna of a base station and comprises a plurality of switching cables arranged in predetermined configurations including a single-layer beam forming configuration, a dual-layer beam forming configuration, and a MIMO configuration. In response to inputs received from UEs served by the base station, the switching device can implement the configuration best-suited to target the UEs.

A second request is sent to the second access node to accept a handover of the wireless device to the second access node when the timer expires, and the wireless device is instructed to change from communicating with the first access node to communicating with the second access node when the second request is accepted by the second access node.

In systems and methods of frequency band selection in a multiband communication system, it is determined for a wireless device that a lower frequency band signal strength criteria meets a first threshold above a higher frequency band signal strength criteria and that the higher frequency band signal strength meets a second threshold. A modulation and coding scheme of a communication link of the wireless device is determined. When the higher frequency band signal strength criteria meets the secpmd threshold and the determined modulation and coding scheme meets a third threshold, the wireless device is instructed to change from operating on the higher frequency band to operating on the lower frequency band.

A method, system, and medium are provided for increasing carrier-to-interference-and-noise ratio (CINR) gain in a long-term-evolution network deploying beam forming (BF) technologies. Adjacent eNodeBs, each serving a respective user equipment (UE) located at the boundary between the two eNodeBs, communicate BF parameters to each other. Each eNodeB uses the received BF parameters to adjust its DL transmission beam in order to decrease the interference at each of the respective UEs. By adjusting the DL transmission beam to decrease interference, CINR gain at the UEs is correspondingly increased.

A method, system, and medium are provided for approximating an uplink sounding reference signal for a secondary radio-frequency channel associated with an eNodeB in a long-term-evolution (LTE) network deploying carrier aggregation. This is useful when the eNodeB does not have an uplink channel associated with the secondary RF channel. The approximated uplink sounding reference signal is utilized by the eNodeB to determine downlink beamforming weights for the secondary RF channel.

Estimating sounding reference signals for secondary radio-frequency channels

Systems, equipment, and methods for driving antenna systems with pairs of overlaid orthogonal antenna elements are provided herein. In one example, a method of operating a remote radio unit that drives an antenna system is provided. The method includes receiving user communications and control data transferred by a baseband unit. If the control data indicates a beamforming mode, then the method includes generating a first plurality of radio frequency (RF) signals directed to at least one of the pairs of overlaid orthogonal antenna elements for target wireless communication devices. If the control data indicates a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) mode, then the method includes generating a second plurality of RF signals for the plurality of antenna elements, wherein the second plurality of RF signals are directed to non-adjacent ones of the pairs of the overlaid orthogonal antenna elements for the target wireless communication devices.

Antenna system driven in beamforming and MIMO transmission modes

It is determined that a first channel loading of a first access node channel meets a loading threshold. Wireless devices in active communication over the first access node channel are identified, the wireless devices comprising an application running on each wireless device, each application comprising an application requirement which meets an application requirement criteria. The identified wireless devices are ranked into a first order based on a modulation and coding scheme assigned to each wireless device, and are further ranked in a second order within the first order based on an indication of an amount of data pending transmission from each wireless device when two or more wireless devices are assigned the same modulation and coding scheme. Each identified wireless device is instructed to operate on a second access node channel according to the second order, until the first channel loading does not meet the loading threshold.

Combinations of a number of physical resource blocks and modulation and coding schemes which meet a data rate threshold are selected. For each combination of the number of physical resource blocks and modulation and coding schemes, a signal gain is calculated. The combination of the number of physical resource blocks and modulation and coding schemes corresponding to the largest signal gain is selected, and information is transmitted from an access node to a wireless device over a communication link using the selected combination of the number of physical resource blocks and modulation and coding schemes.
