A free-floating rifle rail and barrel locking system that provides a barrel assembly and rail assembly, which is detachable from the main body of a rifle without tools. This is advantageous for quick field breakdown and/or rifle modification. The user has the option to disassemble the rifle for easy transport, to change barrel length, to change barrel caliber or change rail configurations. The rails are free-floating, meaning the rails do not come in contact with the barrel and thus do not impact the precision of the rifle.

Free-floating rifle rail and barrel locking system(S)/assemblies

A quick-attach/quick-detach coupler assembly used for mounting a hand guard around a rifle barrel, allowing prompt barrel change. The coupler assembly has a generally cylindrical barrel nut with a plurality of external rail-mounting teeth centrally around its exterior circumference, interior threads for connection to the upper receiver of a rifle, and multiple fastener holes allowing set screws to contact a two-piece separable extension and provide anti-rotational engagement between it and the barrel nut. The barrel nut's interior threads also connect it to the extension. A tool configured as a hand guard fastener and stored/carried on the hand guard is easily accessed to tighten/release the set screws. The tool's handle may also be configured to engage notches on the extension's barrel end and facilitate its release from the barrel nut. The coupler assembly will mount almost every hand guard currently marketed to the upper receiver of the AR family of rifles.

Barrel nut with two-piece separable extension

A quick-detach, free floating, two-piece forward hand guard assembly for a rifle, which includes an inner barrel nut adapted for connection to the rifle's receiver and an outer barrel nut telescopically received over the inner barrel nut and secured thereto to prevent rotation therebetween. The hand guard assembly also includes a top hand guard element engaged with and extending forwardly from the outer barrel nut in a laterally-stable cantilevered orientation above the rifle's barrel. A bottom hand guard element is matingly engaged with the top hand guard element for surrounding the bottom portion of the rifle's barrel and free-floats from the top hand guard element. A spring-loaded detent screw attaches the top and bottom hand guard elements together and also engages the inner barrel nut. For quick-detach barrel removal, the outer barrel nut may be hinged for clamshell action, with the inner barrel nut having a separable two-piece extension.

Quick-release hand guard assembly for a rifle

A quick release, free floating, multi-piece forward hand guard assembly for a rifle includes an inner barrel nut adapted to be affixed to a front of the rifle receiver and an outer barrel nut telescopically received over the inner barrel nut and longitudinally secured thereto. The outer barrel nut is non-rotatable with respect to the inner barrel nut. A first hand guard element is engaged with and extends forwardly from the outer barrel nut in a laterally stable cantilevered fashion, and a second hand guard element is matingly engaged with the first hand guard element for surrounding the rifle's barrel and is free floating therefrom. The second hand guard element is attached to the first hand guard element with at least one quick release fastener.
