Systems and methods that facilitate the automatic (or substantially automatic) preparation of a sample of a product containing molecules for analysis and automatic (or substantially automatic) performance of an assay of that sample. Thus, the preparation and analysis can be performed substantially in-real time, or, in other words, much more quickly than presently allowed by conventional systems and methods.

A well for electrically stimulating at least one cell. The well includes a bottom portion and comprises an adaptive electrode arrangement for introducing an electric field into the well. The adaptive electrode arrangement includes a pair of electrodes disposed within the well. Each electrode of the pair of electrodes has a distal end and is independently and axially displaceable relative to the other electrode and the bottom portion of the well. The distal end of each electrode of the pair of electrodes is in contact with the bottom portion of the well, ensuring a uniform and constant electric field is applied within the well.

Methods and systems of performing an assay. A system for performing an assay includes an enclosure defining a temperature-controlled space. An imaging system, an actuator and a dispenser are disposed within the space. The actuator receives a well plate having wells. The actuator is to move the well plate relative to the imaging system to enable the imaging system to obtain image data of one of the wells. The dispenser includes a pump, an outlet and a reservoir holder to receive a reservoir containing a compound. The pump is to be fluidly coupled to the reservoir and an outlet. The pump is to pump the compound from the reservoir through the outlet into one of the wells. The system also includes a controller. The controller is to cause the dispenser to dispense the compound into the first one of the wells while the imaging system obtains the image data.
