A mobile application includes a breaker/relay that includes a plurality of fixed contacts electrically coupled to a power bus, a plurality of corresponding moveable contacts that are selectively electrically coupled to the plurality of fixed contacts, allowing power flow through the power bus when electrically coupled to the fixed contacts and preventing power flow when not electrically coupled, an armature operationally coupled to at least one of the moveable contacts, such that the armature prevents electrical coupling between the at least one of the moveable contacts and the corresponding one of the fixed contacts when in a first position and allows electrical coupling when in a second position, a first biasing member biasing the armature into the first position or the second position; and an arc suppression assembly structured to guide and disperse an opening arc between each of the plurality of moveable contacts and the corresponding fixed contacts.

Mobile application with combined breaker and relay

Arc fault detection modules for vehicles intended to supervise circuits and detect arc fault conditions in both alternating current and direct current circuits. A number of these arc fault detection modules may be integrated into a vehicle's electrical system in strategic locations. Each arc fault module contains sensing capabilities for monitoring the circuit, and may also include signal conditioning capabilities, processing capabilities for determining the occurrence of an arc fault, contactors for disabling the supervised circuit, and communications capabilities to interact with other vehicle components and telematics systems. As a result arc fault detection odules can be customized to leverage existing features of a vehicle's electrical system or to provide fully redundant arc fault protection.

Arc fault detection modules for vehicle electrical systems

A system includes a vehicle including a motive electrical power path; a power distribution unit including: a current protection circuit disposed in the motive electrical power path, the current protection circuit including a fuse and a contactor in a series arrangement with the fuse; a high voltage power input coupling including a first electrical interface for a high voltage power source; and a high voltage power output coupling including a second electrical interface for a motive power load, where the current protection circuit electrically couples the high voltage power input coupling to the high voltage power output coupling.

Fuse and contactor management for an electric mobile application

A method includes interpreting a contactor open event and a contactor load value for a contactor positioned on a motive power circuit for a mobile application, determining that a contactor opening event under load has occurred in response to the contactor open event and the contactor load value, and updating a contactor wear condition in response to the contactor opening event under load, wherein updating the contactor wear condition comprises accumulating a number of the contactor opening events under load.

Contactor damage and diagnostics

A system including a vehicle having a motive electrical power path, a power distribution unit comprising a current protection circuit disposed in the motive electrical power path, the current protection circuit comprising a thermal fuse and a contactor in a series arrangement with the thermal fuse. The system further including a current source circuit electrically coupled to the thermal fuse and structured to inject a current across the thermal fuse, a hardware filter electrically coupled to the thermal fuse, the hardware filter comprising a cutoff frequency determined in response to an injection frequency of the current source circuit, and sa voltage determination circuit electrically coupled to the thermal fuse and structured to determine an injected voltage amount in response to the filtered injected current.

Fuse and contactor with active current injection

A system includes a vehicle comprising a motive electrical power path; a power distribution unit comprising a current protection circuit disposed in the motive electrical power path, the current protection circuit comprising a fuse; a current source circuit electrically coupled to the fuse and structured to inject a current across the fuse; and a voltage determination circuit electrically coupled to the fuse and structured to determine at least one of an injected voltage value and a fuse impedance value.

Active current injection through a fuse for an electric mobile application

A system includes a vehicle including a motive electrical power path and at least one auxiliary electrical power path; a power distribution unit having a motive current protection circuit disposed in the motive electrical power path, the motive current protection circuit including a fuse; an auxiliary current protection circuit disposed in each of the at least one auxiliary electrical power path, each auxiliary current protection circuit including an auxiliary fuse; a motive current sensor electrically coupled to the motive electrical power path, where the motive current sensor is configured to provide a motive current value; and at least one auxiliary current sensor, each auxiliary current sensor electrically coupled to one of the at least one auxiliary electrical power path, each auxiliary current sensor configured to provide a corresponding auxiliary current value.

Fuse management for an electric mobile application

An apparatus to determine offset voltage to adjust a fuse current determination including a fuse load circuit structured to determine that no current is demanded for a fuse load, and to further determine that contactors associated with the fuse are open, an offset voltage determination circuit structured to determine an offset voltage corresponding to at least one component in a fuse circuit associated with the fuse, in response to the determining that no current is demanded for the fuse load, and an offset data management circuit structured to store the offset voltage, and to communicate a current calculation offset voltage for use by a controller to determine current flow through the fuse.

A system including a vehicle having a motive electrical power path; a power distribution unit including a current protection circuit disposed in the motive electrical power path, the current protection circuit including a breaker/relay, the breaker/relay including: a fixed contact, a moveable contact, and a physical opening response portion responsive to a current value; a current source circuit electrically coupled to the breaker/relay and structured to inject a current across the fixed contact; and a voltage determination circuit electrically coupled to the breaker/relay and structured to determine at least one of an injected voltage amount and a contactor impedance value, wherein the voltage determination circuit comprises an analog hardware filter having a cutoff frequency selected in response to a frequency of the injected current.
