An optical sensor may be used to measure the concentration of calcium in a water sample, such as a water sample obtained from industrial process water system like a cooling tower system, a boiler water system, or a waste water system. To measure the concentration of calcium, an indicator or reagent may be added to the water sample to form a complex that absorbs light. The absorbance profile of the complex may be non-linear over a range of calcium concentrations. However, the absorbance profile can be linearized to provide calibration coefficients that are subsequently used to determine the concentration of calcium in samples having unknown calcium concentrations. The linearization of the absorbance profile can allow the optical sensor to be calibrated using two solutions. This can reduce the complexity and cost of calibrating the optical sensor, which may otherwise require at least three calibration solutions to capture the non-linear profile of the absorbance curve.

Disclosed are devices and methods for determining a fluid level of and the amount of fluid remaining in a container. A portable measuring device can include a housing, a sensor, and a measurement system. The sensor can be supported by the housing and can detect a fluid level of the container. The measurement system can be configured to receive information including a measurement of the container, to determine an amount of fluid in the container based on a measurement of the container and a detected fluid level of the container, and to output the amount of fluid in the container and geometric information of the container. A method can include supplying such a device, placing the device proximal to or in abutment with and moving the device along an outer surface of the container, providing a signal to a user, and outputting the amount of fluid in a container.

Portable fluid level monitoring device and method

An optical sensor may include a housing, a printed circuit board, an optical emitter, and an optical detector. The housing can define a channel configured to receive a transparent tubing line through which fluid can flow during operation. The housing can have multiple optical pathways, including a primary optical pathway transecting the channel, a light emission optical pathway, and a light detection optical pathway. The optical emitter and optical detector can each be mounted on the printed circuit board. Further, the housing may be positioned on the printed circuit board with the optical emitter aligned to emit light into the light emission optical pathway and the optical detector aligned to receive light from the light detection optical pathway.

The disclosed systems and method utilize the autofluorescence, optic imaging, and heat transfer resistance technologies to monitor the same simulated surface area for deposits. The systems and methods may provide continuous monitoring, detection, characterization and quantification of deposits. Utilizing this information, an associated control system may initiate alarms, initiate a chemical treatment operation, and adjust corresponding chemical treatment and preventive protocols to minimize and/or eradicate the issue.
