Electronic content such as an electronic book (e-book) that is referenced in or otherwise related to other content such as website content is identified, and a visual representation of the electronic content is generated. The visual representation is presented in conjunction with the website content, and a reader application for previewing the electronic content is launched via user interaction with the visual representation. Exiting the reader application causes a browser application that is rendering the website content to be automatically returned to a foreground state. A variety of actions are enabled via interaction with the reader application such as purchasing the electronic content, sharing the electronic content, or downloading a sample preview of the electronic content for later consumption.

Previewing electronic content within third-party websites

Some implementations include identifying conflicts between multiple layers of supplementary content associated with a digital work (e.g., an electronic book). For individual conflicts between layers of supplementary content at one or more locations within the digital work, conflicts between layers may be resolved in favor of a higher priority layer. Upon resolution of the conflict, information associated with the higher priority layer for supplementing content at a particular location in the digital work may be determined. A visual identifier of the higher priority layer may be displayed along with content associated with the digital work at the particular location.

Supplementary content layers

Techniques are provided for selectively and dynamically determining one or more words of an electronic book to present with comprehension guides. For instance, an electronic device rendering an electronic book may determine whether to display some, all, or no words of the book with comprehension guides for words within the electronic book based on word difficulty, contextual importance or aspects of the user. Techniques are also provided for determining the content of comprehension guides to be presented with the words.

Previewing electronic book content within third-party websites

Disclosed is a shipping platform (e.g., a cart, skid, or pallet) or a display desk, table, or shelf. In one embodiment, the apparatus may convert from a six, eight, or ten foot long shipping platform to a six, eight, or ten foot long table or shelf. The table or shelf surface may be raised or lowered and multiple apparatus can be stacked on top of each other to create larger shelves. Operably, the apparatus may be used for transportation, drayage, and storage (e.g., underneath the platform or shelf when setup as a table) of items to be displayed.
