Total internal reflection (TIR) based image displays comprise at least one high refractive index (>˜1.5) convex protrusion interfaced with a low refractive index (<˜1.5) medium. Total internal reflection of light is frustrated at this interface by movement of electrophoretically mobile particles into and out of the evanescent wave region. The size, shape and arrangement of the convex protrusions, typically in the shape of lenses, affects TIR at the interface and ultimately the brightness of the display. The brightness is a critical aspect of reflective displays. The degree of brightness determines what applications the displays may be used for and their ultimate acceptance by consumers. For example, high brightness displays allow for the use of color filter arrays for applications requiring color. The shape of the convex protrusions may be described by a polar coordinate system.

Convex protrusions in TIR-based image displays

The disclosed embodiments relate to lateral migration of particles in a totally internally reflective displays. In certain embodiments, the reflective image displays include partial and full walls to form partitions within the display. The walls mitigate diffusion and lateral migration or drift of electrophoretically mobile particles due to lateral electric fields at adjacent pixels. This improves image quality, bistability and long-term display performance.

TIR-modulated wide viewing angle display

A textured surface on the inward side of the high refractive index transparent front sheet in a reflective image display may lead to a display with a wider viewing angle. The textured surface may be in a random or a patterned array and may comprise microstructures that exhibit total internal reflection and Fresnel reflections. Electrophoretically mobile particles of similar size to the microstructures may improve coverage on the front sheet and improve frustration of TIR leading to darker dark states.

Textured high refractive index surface for reflective image displays

Improvements and modifications are provided in the type of frustrated total internal reflection (TIR) systems described in U.S. Pat. Nos. 6,885,496; 6,891,658; 7,286,280; 7,760,417 and 8,040,591. The improvements and modifications include various methods to improve display operation of hemispherical beaded front plane TIR systems such as (a) inhibit or prevent the undesired non-uniform distribution and lateral migration of charged, electrophoretically mobile, TIR frustrating particles by encapsulating or tethering the particles to the beaded front plane surface; (b) inhibit or prevent the settling of the TIR frustrating particles such as modifying the viscosity of the low refractive index medium; and (c) inhibit or prevent the non-uniformity of the applied electric field during display operation such as using a conforming rear electrode.

New reflective display architecture embodiments are disclosed to create specular or paper-like reflectance comprising a transparent outer sheet with an optional light diffusing layer, a rear backplane electrode, a perforated continuous reflective or non-reflective film with a thin conductive reflective or transparent layer acting as a front electrode facing the transparent outward sheet placed between the transparent outward sheet and rear backplane electrode. Other variations include semi-retroreflective or sintered TiOlayers atop the front electrode. Light is modulated by reflectance or absorbance of the light rays that pass through the transparent outward sheet by movement of light absorbing electrophoretically mobile particles within an optically transparent liquid or air medium. A voltage bias is applied across the medium by a voltage source to move the electrophoretically mobile particles.

Method and system for perforated reflective film display device

A method of forming a selective emitter in a photovoltaic (PV) crystalline silicon semiconductor wafer involves forming a mask on a front side surface of the wafer to create masked and unmasked areas on the front side surface. A first silicon oxide layer is electrochemically formed at the unmasked areas of the front side surface such that the silicon oxide layer extends into an emitter of the wafer at least as far as a dead zone therein. The mask is removed and the first silicon oxide layer is etched back until substantially all of the first silicon oxide layer is removed. A second silicon oxide layer is then electrochemically formed on the front side surface such that the second silicon oxide layer has sufficient thickness to passivate the front side surface.
