A method, computer program product, and computer system to maintain high availability of a service processor. An embodiment provides program code with a location of a second service processor (the second service processor is communicatively coupled to the first service processor). The program code stops a virtual machine during runtime, including instruction execution and IO operations, where during runtime, the virtual machine executes one or more processes to service and manage computing resources in the distributed computing environment. The program code generates a micro-checkpoint of the virtual machine. The program code resumes the instruction execution of the virtual machine and transmits the micro-checkpoint to a second service processor based on the location and then resumes IO operations. The second service processor utilizes the micro-checkpoint to enable a hypervisor on the second service processor to start a virtual machine on the second service processor.

Microcheckpointing with service processor

Disclosed is a computer implemented method, data processing system, and apparatus to respond to detection of a hardware interface error on a system bus, for example, during a concurrent maintenance operation. The service processor may receive an error on the system bus. The error identifies at least one field replaceable unit and may inhibit the suppression of clock signal to the field replaceable unit. The service processor adds an identifier of the field replaceable unit to an eligible Field Replaceable Unit (FRU) list. The service processor recursively adds at least one field replaceable unit that the field replaceable unit depends upon. The service processor suppresses the clock signal to the field replaceable unit. The service processor inhibits tagging the field replaceable unit as unusable for next initial program load.

Hardware recovery responsive to concurrent maintenance

A system, method, and computer-usable medium for applying a destructive firmware update in a non-destructive manner. According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, during operation of a multiprocessor data processing system, a service processor updates firmware in the multiprocessor data processing system from a first firmware setting to a second firmware setting. The service processor iteratively applies the second firmware setting to hardware within the multiprocessor data processing system by de-allocating a first hardware device when the second firmware setting includes at least one destructive operation targeted to the first hardware device, performing the destructive operation on the first hardware device, and re-allocating the first hardware device into the multiprocessor data processing system when the destructive operation is complete.
