The present invention relates to a paint composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of a) polymer particles having an average particle size in the range of from 80 nm to 500 nm; b) polymeric organic crosslinked microspheres having a particle size in the range of from 1 μm to 20 μm; c) polysiloxane particles having a particle size in the range of from 1 μm to 30 μm; d) a rheology modifier; e) an opacifying white pigment having a refractive index of >1.9; and f) less than 10 weight percent of a low Tpolyurethane. The composition of the present invention gives coatings with excellent burnish resistance.

The present invention provides aqueous composition comprising a multi-stage acrylic emulsion polymer having a first stage polymer of from 0.5 to 4 wt. %, based on the total weight of monomers used to make the first stage polymer, of a copolymerized carboxylic acid or salt group containing monomer, and having 10 to 30 wt. %, on total solids of the multi-stage acrylic emulsion polymer, of a second stage polymer of from 3 to 15 wt. % of a copolymerized hydroxyl group containing monomer, the first stage polymer having a glass transition temperature (Tg) by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) of less than &#x2212;10&#xb0; C. and the second stage polymer having a Tg (DMA) of greater than 80&#xb0; C.; and (ii) from 25 to 75 wt. %, based on the total solids weight of the multi-stage acrylic polymer, of a polyurethane.

The present invention provides aqueous matte coating compositions comprising a binder component B) and a polymeric duller component A) composed of particles of one or more multi-stage copolymer or single stage crosslinked (co)polymer, e.g. crosslinked t-butyl (meth)acrylate, the duller component particles A) having an average diameter of 1-20 &#x3bc;m. Components A) and B) are compatible. Preferably, the duller component A) is acrylic; more preferably, components A) and B) are acrylic. The aqueous compositions provide matte coatings having haptic or feel (soft touch) properties, film and appearance properties, including burnish resistance and low color loss.
