A monitor is disclosed for measuring a liquid discharged from a patient's body. A housing defines a cavity having a floor. A substantially rigid wall container is removably positioned within the cavity, the container having a bottom wall portion supported on the floor of the cavity. A transducer is mounted in the floor of the cavity and engages the bottom wall portion of the container. The transducer is periodically engaged to transmit energy through the bottom wall portion and into a pool. The time duration required for the transmitted energy to travel from the transducer means to the upper surface of the pool and back again is determined, and this time duration is converted into a volume of fluid by reference to a look-up table, a mathematical algorithm, or both. The monitor includes an optical sensor to detect the presence of a container in the housing and provides an indication if no container is detected. The monitor also includes a transducer driving routine which drives the transducer at more than one output energy level, and responsive to detection of a weak return signal, the output energy level of a succeeding pulse is increased. A novel container is disclosed which includes a small well directly above the transducer, which has the effect of concentrating initial small amounts of liquid directly above the transducer to permit accurate readings of minute volumes of liquid.

A golf club fitting system and method relate to the use of a golf club having its head rockably mounted on a base to enable the user to position the head adjustably. A club head orientation sensing device determines the loft angle of the club face when disposed in the desired adjusted position. A microcomputer responds to the sensor indicating the measured loft angle and other parameters such as the right handed or left handed user information and the intended playing surface condition information. A device responds to the microcomputer to display the determined loft angle desired for the given user.

Golf club fitting system and method of using same

An apparatus for fitting golf club length and head-to-shaft angle to an individual person. The fitting club shaft is in two telescoping portions. A conventional grip is provided at the end of the first portion and the end of the second portion is pivotally connected to a conventional club head. A generally 'L'shaped electrically insulating panel has one leg extending into the second shaft portion and the other leg extending into a cavity in the head. A first series of longitudinally spaced electrical contacts on the first end are adapted to be contacted by a connection contact on the movable first shaft portion to send an electrical signal indicating club length. A second series of spaced electrical contacts are radially arranged on the second leg about the shaft pivot point. The second series of contacts is adapted to be contacted by a second connection contact to send an electrical signal indicating head-to-shaft angle. A person grasps the fitting club grip and assumes a normal golf stance. A digital display provides a visible readout on an adjacent tower of the club length and head-to-shaft angle selected by the person. A rack attached to the tower carries a number of normal clubs having different lengths and angles, so that the person can select a club having dimensions corresponding to the display.

Apparatus for fitting a golf club to a player

A surgical instrument and support unit for enabling a user using one hand to probe an incision and illuminate, irrigate, and aspirate the incision. The surgical instrument has a probe with illumination, irrigation, and aspiration ports on the end. The probe is coupled to a handle having controls for the irrigation and aspiration functions. Light from a high intensity lamp in the handle is transmitted through an optical fiber to the illumination port. A heat sink enclosing the lamp draws heat away from the lamp and transfers the heat to the aspirated fluid passing through the heat sink. The support unit is controlled by a microcomputer and provides an electrical supply for the lamp and a pressurized fluid supply for irrigation. The sources of the irrigation fluid is a standard hospital flexible bag. A bladder inflated by an air pump pressurizes the flexible bag. The pump is also utilized to deflate the bladder to allow rapid changing of the flexible bag during a surgical procedure.

A medical apparatus for automatically measuring and displaying the quantity of a liquid discharged by a patient during a defined real time interval. The apparatus is comprised of a reusable housing and a disposable plastic container adapted to be removably received in a cavity in the housing. A transducer is mounted in the floor of the cavity to engage the container and transmit sonic pulses through the container wall into a liquid pool in the container. A molded silicon rubber cap is fitted over the transducer to assure good acoustic coupling between the transducer and the container without requiring the use of an intermediate gel substance. The container is configured such that when it is received in the housing cavity, it is oriented to cause liquid entering an inlet port in the top portion to pool over the flat section of the container bottom wall. The apparatus includes an electronic measurement subsystem for measuring both the volume of liquid in the container and the passage of real time and for digitally displaying the volume of liquid accumulated within a defined real time interval. The measurement subsystem periodically samples the liquid level in the container by energizing the transducer to transmit an ultrasonic pulse. The pulse travels through the container wall and the liquid pool and is reflected off the surface of the pool. The reflected pulse then again passes through the liquid pool and is received by the transducer. The measurement unit determines the travel or 'flight' time duration between pulse transmission and pulse receipt.

A digital servo control system for a d.c. motor to achieve stepping motor precision and a wider speed control range than either a conventional d.c. motor or a stepping motor, as may be typically utilized in an IV syringe pump. Motor position and direction sensing, as well as motor advance signals at the desired motor rate, condition motor advance and retard logic which, in turn, effects a unique counter-controlled motor drive subsystem to cause the d.c. motor to move forward, reverse, coast or slow down over a 1,000 to 1 speed control range.
