Systems and methods disclosed herein may be useful for use in a wheel assembly which includes a heat shield. In this regard heat shield for a wheel may include a first member; a second member positioned radially of the first member defining an annular cavity between the first member and the second member; an opening in at least one of the first member and the second member configured to provide fluidic communication between the annular cavity and an outside of the annular cavity; and a mounting feature in operable communication with the first member and the second member configured to attach the heat shield to the wheel.

Systems and methods disclosed herein may be useful for use in a wheel assembly. In this regard a wheel assembly may comprise a wheel base with a center axis, a side rim disposed about a circumference of the wheel base, wherein the side rim includes a frustoconical radially inward surface, and a lock ring comprising a single unitary member. The lock ring may secure the side rim onto the wheel base, the lock ring preventing the side rim from sliding axially with respect to the wheel base, wherein a frustoconical radially outward surface of the lock ring comprises a first angle with respect to the frustoconical radially inward surface of the side rim.

A brake comprising a brake disk stack including stators alternating with rotors that are rotatable relative to the stators about an axis of the disk stack, an annular torque plate at one axial end of the brake disk stack, and a circumferential arrangement of actuators at the other axial end of the brake disk stack for urging the brake disk stack against the torque plate thereby to effect a braking force on the rotors. A back leg () of the annular torque plate includes a plurality of apertures (-) arranged asymmetrically around the axis of the brake disk stack.

An integrated wheel, brake and axle structure for an aircraft comprises a tubular axle, and a wheel hub rotatably mounted interiorly of the tubular axle and accessible at an axial end thereof for mounting of a wheel thereto. A brake disk stack, having front and rear axial ends, includes alternating rotor and stator disks mounted with respect to the wheel support and wheel for relative axial movement. Each rotor disk is coupled to the wheel for rotation therewith and each stator disk is coupled to the axle for support against rotation. In such arrangement, the wheel web functions as a back pressure member for applying force to the outboard end of the disk stack. A cooling fan is provided interior of the axle for generating a cooling flow of air across the brake disk stack.

A friction brake includes a friction disk assembly having high dynamic stability against undesired vibration during a braking event. The friction disk assembly comprises an annular structural carrier of carbon and/or ceramic or other suitable structual material, preferably a fiber reinforced composite material, including a plurality of recessed regions and torque drive notches spaced around its circumferential direction, and a friction lining of carbon and/or ceramic or other suitable structural material, preferably a fiber reinforced composite material, mounted on the carrier, the friction lining having a flat wear (rubbing) face and an obverse face including raised areas corresponding to and matingly engaging the recessed regions of the carrier to prevent rotation of the lining relative to the carrier. The lining may be formed of of virgin or recycled carbon, ceramic or other suitable friction material. The lining may be retained to the carrier by mechanical fasteners such as rivets or clips. The assembly may be refurbished by simple replacement of the worn lining without need of machining. The carrier and the lining are preferably formed as unitary annular members.

A friction disk assembly comprises an annular structural carrier including a plurality of recessed regions and torque drive notches spaced around its circumferential direction, and a friction lining mounted on the carrier, the friction lining having a flat wear (rubbing) face and an obverse face including raised areas corresponding to and matingly engaging the recessed regions of the carrier to prevent rotation of the lining relative to the carrier. The carrier may be formed of steel or other suitable structural material. The lining may be formed of virgin or recycled carbon, ceramic or other suitable friction material. The lining may be retained to the carrier by rivets. The lining may be provided with a structural casing configured to engage the recessed regions of the carrier. The assembly may be refurbished by simple replacement of the worn lining. The carrier and the lining may be formed as unitary annular members or as segments of annular members.

A multiple disc brake assembly having a plurality of interleaved rotor discs and stator discs which are cooperative with a stationary torque tube which has a carbon composite brake pad mounted on its reaction plate in such a manner to prohibit stress concentration due to relative thermal expansion between the non-similar materials of the torque tube and brake pad at the torque reaction points while providing a reaction mechanism to circumferential forces generated by brake friction.

A friction brake disc assembly having a plurality of axially aligned annular shaped rotor discs splined for axial movement interleaved with annular stator discs which are splined for axial movement along a mating key member or members that are fixedly secured to a torque tube. The discs have a plurality of circumferentially spaced slots along the periphery, with inserts therein to transfer the load to the discs. The inserts have structural portions thereof extending along the outer annular surface of the discs for engagement by clips to retain the inserts within the slots. The clips are secured to spaced locations along the periphery of the discs to minimize the concentrations of any load transferred from the inserts to the discs.
