The present disclosure relates to a switchable terminal device that includes a first digit having a distal end and a proximal end, a second digit moveably attached to the first digit by a first connector such that the second digit reversibly rotates around the first connector and substantially within a plane, and a lever guide having a first portion and a second portion, the lever guide attached to the second digit at least by the first connector passing through the lever guide at an angle about perpendicular to the plane. The switchable terminal device also includes a lever having a proximal end and a distal end with the proximal end of the lever moveably attached to the first portion of the lever guide by a second connector, a third connector attached near the distal end of the first digit, and an elastic cord that includes a first segment having a first end, and a second segment having a second end. Further, the first end is attached to the first portion of the lever guide, a first part of the first segment contacts the second portion of the lever guide, a second part of the first segment spans a first distance between the lever guide and the third connector, a first part of the second segment spans a second distance between the third connector and the distal end of the lever, and the second end of the elastic cord is attached to the lever.

Gripping device with switchable prehension modes

This disclosure relates to the field of prosthetics, more specifically to a pinless anthropomorphic hinge or joint, and a digit comprising one or more phalanges connected by and articulating around pinless joints, whereby the joints provide compliant movement in more than one plane. This disclosure also relates to modular prosthetic systems comprising multiple digits, in particular for partial-hand replacements.

Joint and digit

The present invention is a switchable gripping terminal device that can be switched from a voluntary open prehension mode to a voluntary closed prehension mode, at will by the user. In an embodiment of the present invention, the terminal device may comprise a movable digit attached to a fixed digit, whereby the user can actuate the movable digit, such that the movable digit rotates relative to the fixed digit. The terminal device may comprise a lever, which enables the user to switch from a first mode, voluntary open (VO), to a second mode, voluntary closed (VC). This switchable biasing means, allows the user to decide the prehension mode, and easily switch the mode at will, according to the circumstances.

An upper extremity prosthetic device is provided that comprises three main components, namely, an arm cuff, a forearm section and a distal connector. The arm cuff is adjustable to accommodate lower arms of different sizes. The forearm section may be constructed in certain limited sizes to accommodate different sized forearm residual limbs. The distal connector is designed to connect to any of the forearm section configurations, and the distal connector enables any terminal device to be attached to the connector. The components may be mixed and matched in various combinations to fit the physical dimensions of virtually any amputee. The interchangeable parts will accommodate a wide range of residual limb geometries, overall sizes and lengths. Embodiments of the present invention minimize the need for time and resource-intensive customized fitting and create an affordable, relatively low-cost prosthetic interface.

Anatomically-configured adjustable upper extremity prosthetic device

A voluntary opening prosthetic split hook terminal device is provided with an adjustable pinch force, functional grasping contours and illumination capabilities. Embodiments of the present invention include a tensioning mechanism that permits adjustment of the tension of a spring member to increase or decrease the pinching force of the device. The tensioning mechanism may be repositioned among multiple positions to vary the tension in a spring member. Movement of the tensioning mechanism utilizes principles of mechanical leverage in a way such that the force applied by the spring member does not need to be directly opposed in order to reposition the tensioning mechanism and the tensioning device will automatically lock into a selected position. Additional embodiments include digits with dual internal edges and logarithmic spiral contours for enhanced grasping of objects. Still further embodiments include illumination for functional and aesthetic purposes.

An automated balloonsonde launcher and a method for an automated balloonsonde launch are disclosed. The automated balloonsonde launcher, for example, may comprise a collapsible protective cover forming an inner region for receiving a balloon, a gas inlet for receiving a gas, a gas outlet for mating with a balloon, a valve operable between the gas inlet and the gas outlet for inflating a balloon within the inner region of the protective cover. The launcher further comprises a controller that controls the valve to inflate a balloon within the protective cover, opens an opening in the protective cover and releases a balloon through the opening of the protective cover.

A prehensor is provided comprising embodiments of a variable mechanical advantage mechanism, the prehensor including a first mechanical advantage for sizing an object, and a second mechanical advantage for gripping the object. Embodiments of the variable mechanical advantage mechanism include a brake assembly and multiple embodiments of a brakeless assembly. Additionally, multiple embodiments of a selectable voluntary opening/voluntary closing mechanism are provided, whereby a single prehensor can be switched back and forth between a voluntary closing mode and a voluntary opening mode. Additional embodiments include a safety clutch, an improved prehensor tendon, replaceable digits, and self decontaminating digits.

Prehensor device and improvements of same

An apparatus and method for measuring the total thermal resistance to heat flow from the air to the evaporative cooler fins of a refrigeration system. The apparatus is a frost sensor that measures the reduction in heat flow due to the added thermal resistance of ice (reduced conduction) as well as the reduction in heat flow due to the blockage of airflow (reduced convection) from excessive ice formation. The sensor triggers a defrost cycle when needed, instead of on a timed interval. The invention is also a method for control of frost in a system that transfers heat from air to a refrigerant along a thermal path. The method involves measuring the thermal conductivity of the thermal path from the air to the refrigerant, recognizing a reduction in thermal conductivity due to the thermal insulation effect of the frost and due to the loss of airflow from excessive ice formation; and controlling the defrosting of the system.

A voluntary close mechanical grasping device suitable for use in robotics or as a prehensor for body-power prosthetic equipment provides an energy efficient two stage process for sizing and gripping an object and a holding assist capability for assisting a wearer in maintaining his or her grip on the object. During the first stage, the device sizes an object but does not apply a force against the object sufficient to grasp the object securely. During the second stage, the device exerts a force against the object sufficient to grasp the object securely. After the object has been grasped, the device provides a mechanical holding assist capability to help hold the object securely while the input energy supplied by the wearer is reduced.
