Examples herein relate to an apparatus. In some examples, an apparatus may include a circuit to direct a power signal to at least one electrical component. The circuit may include a protection device to regulate power to the electrical component, detection circuitry to detect when the protection device has failed, and an alert handling logic to receive a signal from the detection circuitry that the protection device has failed.

Circuits to identify protection device failures

A power throttling method and system for a memory controller in a computer system comprising a power supply module including a plurality of bulk power supplies ('BPSs') are described. In one embodiment, each of the at BPSs provides to a power output monitor a status signal indicative of a status thereof. Responsive to receipt of the status signals, the power output monitor determines whether a bulk power supply capacity is below system power requirements. Responsive to a positive determination, the power output monitor drives a throttle control signal to the memory controller to a level indicative of an over-threshold state.

System and method for throttling memory power consumption

An electronic device is disclosed herein. An embodiment of the electronic device comprises an electronic component, wherein the electronic component is operated by a DC voltage. The electronic component comprises an AC to DC converter that converts an AC voltage to the DC voltage, wherein the RMS value of the AC voltage is greater than the DC voltage. The electronic device further comprises a power supply comprising an input and an output. The input is connectable to a line voltage and the output is connected to the AC to DC converter of electronic component. The AC voltage is output by the output of the power supply.

A system includes a converter to convert an input voltage to an output voltage, where the converter has an adjustment input. The system further includes a voltage adjustment logic to receive an indication of an electrical current consumed by a load, with the voltage adjustment logic being responsive to the indication of the consumed electrical current to provide a control indication to the adjustment input of the converter to adjust the output voltage from the converter.

Adjusting an output voltage of a converter based on current consumption

A system comprises a first equipment rack, a power distribution unit (PDU) and a plurality of rack connectors. The PDU is mounted in the first equipment rack and is configured to provide alternating current (AC) power that comprises a plurality of phases. The plurality of rack connectors mount within the first equipment rack, and each of the plurality of rack connectors couples to the PDU and provides access to the plurality of phases. Each rack connector is usable to accommodate a first device installed in the equipment rack that uses one or more of the plurality of phases, and is also usable to accommodate a second device installed in the equipment rack that uses one or more of the plurality of phases, thereby permitting each rack connector to couple to any of a plurality of devices, and permitting each of the plurality of devices to use any number of the plurality of phases. The number of phases used by the first device differs from the number of phases used by the second device.

System for distributing AC power within an equipment rack

Systems, methodologies, media, and other embodiments associated with detecting and responding to a degradation of a direct current provided to a frequency scalable processor are described. One exemplary frequency scalable processor includes a voltage regulating logic configured to request that a direct current having a reference voltage be provided to the processor. The example processor may also include a logic for detecting whether the voltage matches the reference voltage to within a desired tolerance and to selectively store processor state and/or data based on the detecting.

A power throttling method and system for a memory controller in a computer system. One embodiment includes, responsive to a determination that a change in the state of a cover switch has occurred that will result in an increase in an operating temperature of at least one memory device during normal operation, driving a throttle control signal to the memory controller to a level indicative of an over-threshold state.

One exemplary system embodiment includes an uninterrupted power supply (UPS) manager logic configured to determine a power status of one or more UPS devices attached to one or more external peripheral devices. The UPS manager logic can be configured to notify an appropriate operating system of a power loss to a selected external device.

The present invention determines temperature and current from resistance measurements of a single magnetoresistive sensor. A dual-purpose sensor includes the magnetoresistive sensor having a single pair of terminals. The sensor is multiplexed under separate current conditions to produce both a temperature measurement and a current measurement in a vicinity of the sensor. A sensor system includes the dual-purpose sensor, a resistance sensing subsystem and a controller that controls the current conditions. A method of measuring temperature and current includes measuring a first resistance of the dual-purpose sensor while a first current is flowing in a conductor adjacent to the sensor, and measuring a second resistance of the sensor while a second current is flowing in the conductor. The first current has a known value while the second current has an unknown value. The temperature and current are determined respectively from the first and second resistance measurements.

Multiplexed dual-purpose magnetoresistive sensor and method of measuring current and temperature

A system and method for power management in a computer system having multiple power grids is disclosed. The system includes a service structure operable in conjunction with an operating system (OS) instance executed on the computer system. At least one uninterrupted power supply (UPS) and at least one alternative source of power provide power to the multiple power grids. Where an UPS sends a loss of power notification to the service structure, the service structure is operable to maintain power supply to the grids from an available alternative source of power.

System and method for power management in a computer system having multiple power grids

An active protection circuit for a MOSFET isolated switched power supply system operates to control the switching of the MOSFET isolation switches. A monitoring circuit operates to sense and turn off the isolation switch of the currently active power supply if it senses reverse current flowing through the switch. Simultaneously, a controller receives indication that the active power supply is out of specification, and actively switches the system voltage source to the other power supply. The controller actively ensures that the isolation switch of the out-of-specification power supply remains off until it determines otherwise.

Active circuit protection for switched power supply system

Techniques are provided for simultaneously addressing multiple devices on a data bus, such as by transmitting over a data bus a single message that is received and processed by multiple devices on the bus. Multiple devices may be simultaneously addressed using the standard bus architecture and protocol, without affecting the operation of other devices on the bus. In particular, a master device may address a first subset of the plurality of devices on the bus using a primary address shared by the first subset of the plurality of devices. The master device may address a second subset of the plurality of devices using a secondary address shared by the second subset of the plurality of devices. The second subset is a subset of the first subset. The master device may then transmit information over the bus to the second subset of the plurality of devices.

Method and apparatus for addressing multiple devices simultaneously over a data bus

Logic apparatus filters noise signals on a signal line to a digital circuit. An edge detector determines one or more edges of the noise signals relative to a fast clock. Signals indicative of the edges asynchronously reset a timer; the timer clocks the latch of the signal line when the signal line is stable, and without noise signals detected by the edge detector, for a period defined by a slow clock. The slow clock is slower than the fast clock by several orders of magnitude. The edge detector may be constructed by one flip-flop and an XOR gate. A second flip flop couples to the signal line and the output of the timer to pass through the latched value of the signal line to the digital circuit when clocked by the timer.

Method and apparatus for a digital logic input signal noise filter

A dual power source system includes a first power source and a second power source operably coupled with an electrical device, as well as a switching mechanism capable of selecting between the first and second power sources. An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is place in line with one of the first and second power sources leading to the electrical device. Sense circuitry is capable of identifying a power failure condition in either the first or second power sources. A controller utilizes signals from the sense circuitry to selectively switch between the first and second power sources while configuring the UPS in a manner of providing for a plurality of operational states that accommodate the electrical device with operational power despite any combination of power failures in the first and second power sources.

Loadshedding uninterruptible power supply

A system for removal and replacement of core I/O devices while the rest of the computer system is powered-up and operational. The system comprises a custom form-factor core I/O card that contains a plurality of I/O devices, including a processor for managing the card's I/O functions. A command is sent to an operating system, running on a system processor external to the core I/O card, that notifies the system to stop using, and de-configure, the hardware on the core I/O card. Once the OS receives this notification, an indication that the card is ready to be removed is sent to the user. The user then removes the card from its slot and inserts a replacement card into the same slot. The system software then discovers the I/O components on the core I/O card to determine what components are available, and then configures the new I/O device(s).
