A satellite payload system is presented. The system includes plurality of optical processing modules, including a plurality of ring-connected optical processing modules and at least one inter-satellite optical processing module, and at least one optical fiber ring communicatively coupled to each of the ring-connected optical processing modules. At least one of the ring-connected optical processing modules is configured to provide on-board signal processing of signals conveyed on the at least one optical fiber ring. At least one of the ring-connected optical processing modules is communicatively coupled to a respective inter-satellite optical processing module. Each inter-satellite optical processing module is configured to optically communicatively couple to a respective remote satellite.

Photonic lambda switching for satellites

A satellite payload system is disclosed. The satellite payload system includes a plurality of optical processing modules, each including: a module input including an optical splitter, a module output including an optical coupler, a dynamic gain equalizer, an output bank of optical filters, and an input bank of optical filters; where the plurality of optical processing modules include ring-connected optical processing modules and inter-satellite optical processing modules; and at least one optical fiber ring communicatively coupled to each of the ring-connected optical processing modules; where at least one of the ring-connected optical processing modules is configured to provide on-board signal processing of wavelengths; where a plurality of the ring-connected optical processing modules are each communicatively coupled to a respective inter-satellite optical processing module; where each inter-satellite optical processing module is configured to optically communicatively couple to a respective remote satellite via its module input and via its module output.

A reflective spatial light modulator (SLM) includes a first substrate, a second substrate and an electro-optic material positioned between the first and second substrates. The first substrate includes a reflective ground layer that acts as a continuous first electrode and the second substrate includes a pixel layer having a plurality of pixel elements formed in a pattern. The pixel elements are formed of a transparent conductive material and are separated by inter-pixel regions formed of a non-conductive material. A transmissivity of the electro-optic material in a vicinity of each of the plurality of pixel elements is controlled by a potential difference applied between the first electrode and a respective one of the pixel elements.

Spatial light modulators with improved inter-pixel performance

A light dispersing device for dispersing a polychromatic input beam into a plurality of narrow-band output beams such that the output beams are directed in a wavelength dependent manner and such that the directions of the output beams are less affected by a change in temperature. The preferred embodiment of the device comprises a diffraction grating mounted to a surface of a prism. The grating and prism have dispersing characteristics that make the output of the device substantially insensitive to a change in temperature. In one embodiment, the device is adapted to reduce the angles between the input beam and the output beams at the grating, and thereby improve throughput efficiency.

Athermal and high throughput gratings

A light filtering assembly for filtering an input beam of light having a plurality of desired wavelength components and a plurality of unwanted wavelength components so as to provide an output beam having only the desired wavelength components. The filtering assembly comprises an input section, a filtering section, and an output section. The input section divides the input beam into a plurality of polarized beamlets that travel along a corresponding plurality of spatially separated beam paths. The polarized beamlets comprise a plurality of desired beamlets corresponding to the desired wavelength components of the input beam and a plurality of unwanted beamlets corresponding to the unwanted wavelength components of the input beam. The filtering section is disposed in the paths of the beamlets so that the desired beamlets are passed and the unwanted beamlets are blocked. The output section is disposed in the paths of the desired beamlets exiting the filtering section and combines the desired beamlets so as to form the output beam. The output section is substantially identical to the input section to provide bi-directional capabilities. Because the beamlets are linearly polarized, the input and output sections are able to realize a high throughput efficiency.

Dual grating filtering system

A reconfigurable bi-directional wavelength selective switch is disclosed. It has an optical system that is symmetric about a polarization modulator. The symmetric optical system consists of an input birefringent optical system and output birefringent optical system disposed around polarization modulator. The optical system delivers the wavelength channels that are to be switched as a superimposed wavelength channel incident the polarization modulator. As a result, crosstalk is reduced below &minus;35 dB and greater optical performance is achieved.

Wavelength selective switch

A color separation and recombination system separates a beam of white light traveling along an optical axis into three differently colored light beams. The system then independently modulates each colored beam and recombines the colored beams to create a color image. The system includes a crossed pair of dichroic filters to separate the beam of white light and to recombine the modulated bundles. The system also includes a pair of aberration-compensating elements that equalize the optical thickness of glass through which each light bundle passes. This equalization of optical thickness equalizes the aberration induced into each bundle. In another embodiment the beam of white light is polarized before separation. The polarities of the colored light beams are then modulated using a spatial light modulator. An analyzer and half-wave plate are provided between the spatial light modulator and the crossed dichroic filters to pass only a portion of the modulated light. The half-wave plate ensures that the modulated light incident on the crossed dichroic filters is of the same polarity as the polarized white light separated by the crossed dichroic filters.
