An ornament designed for both indoor and outdoor use incorporates a method for automatically detecting if the ornament is being used indoors or outdoors and for thereby activating the ornament at the appropriate desired time for a desired period of time. The method monitors ambient light levels throughout the day to determine if the monitored values match the characteristics expected from either indoor or outdoor operation. When used indoors, the ornament is activated at the same time each day for a predetermined number of hours. When used outdoors, the ornament is activated each day at sunset for a predetermined number of hours. In addition, when used outdoors, the method measures night lengths and adjusts its activation time to run longer when nights are long, as in winter, or shorter when nights are short, as in summer.

Method of illuminating ornament by determining if the ornament is located indoors or outdoors

An artificial flame device that produces a visual effect similar to areal candle flame includes a flame structure made of partially opaque material. The flame structure defines an exterior surface and has a hollow region extending therein. An LED and an optical barrier are provided within the hollow region with the optical barrier located between the LED and a closed end of the flame structure. A second LED is preferably provided between the optical barrier and the flame structure closed end. The first LED is maintained at a constant intensity while the intensity of the second LED is varied between low and high intensities. Alternatively, the intensity of the second LED is inversely varied relative to said intensity of the first LED.

A method of illuminating an ornament having a light emitting source, a battery power source and a control circuit energizing the light source at desired intensities over desired durations of time. Light from the right source travels through an ornament wall. The method repeats the steps of increasing the light intensity from a low to a high intensity during a rise time period; decreasing the light intensity to a low intensity during a fall time period which is not less than the rise time period; and, maintaining the low intensity of light during a remaining time period which is not less than the combined rise and fall time periods. The low intensity of light is less than one third the high intensity. The light intensity decreased and maintained briefly at zero intensity during an off time period between the remaining and rise time periods in an imperceptible manner.

Systems, devices, and methods for a decorative outdoor light fixture that can include an adjustable motion sensor with a rectangular coverage pattern. An adjustable motion sensor for a light fixture can include an outer housing connected to a light fixture frame, a movable sensor assembly including a motion detector contained within the outer housing, a lens covering a portion of the outer housing in the path of the motion detector sensing beams to direct the sensing beams in a rectangular coverage pattern, and a sensor adjustment mechanism accessible from an exterior of the outer housing to allow a user to rotate the sensor adjustment mechanism to cause the motion detector to move upward and downward. The adjustable motion sensor covered with a fixed window that hides the motion sensor assembly from view.

An illuminated ornament having an electronics assembly including a battery holder, a cap, a light emitting source and a control circuit is inserted through a hole axially into the ornament enclosure thereby locating the light source at a distance from the enclosure wall. The enclosure wall allow light to travel therethrough. A diffusing and reflecting cap which is preferably conical shaped converging towards a disk shaped end wall surrounds the light source and both allows light to travel therethrough and reflects light behind the light source to the enclosure wall. The battery holder is permanently attached to the assembly cap and the electronics assembly is removable from the enclosure in one piece. The assembly cap closes the hole. The differential pressure between the inside and outside of the enclosure is relieved preventing air and water entry through the assembly cap to enclosure interface.

According to embodiments of the present invention, a flameless candle includes a housing, a reservoir, and a lamp. The reservoir can retain a fragrant source (e.g., solid, liquid, or mix thereof. The housing has a hollow region and a recessed area within the top surface of the housing. The recessed area is bounded by a bottom surface and a sidewall. There one or more vent holes in the sidewall. If there is a plurality of vent holes, then they may encircle the sidewall. The vent hole(s) allow an airflow from the hollow region and into the recessed area above the fragrant source. The lamp can emit a light through the bottom surface of the recessed area and through fragrant source.

A detachable magnetic docking system for a handheld device comprises a docking plate having a major surface and a shell for the handheld device having a reverse surface. The major surface and the reverse surface are contoured to mate when adjacent one another to align the shell over the docking plate. Cooperative magnetic elements are located in the docking plate and in the shell to retain the handheld device on the docking plate. The contour of the major surface includes a recessed area. The handheld device having internal battery compartments located adjacent non-recessed areas of the major surface.

An apparent motion detector is provided with multiple response levels at differing degrees of sensitivity. The motion detector is based on use of a pyroelectric infrared sensor and conventional circuitry which generates an output signal the strength of which reflects transient temperature changes occurring within a field of view and distinguishable from background heat levels. The detector's response varies with the strength of the signal using a plurality of LED's which emit different colors or are driven at different intensities. The system generally will have a field of view defined by a lens system which is translucent to visible light and transparent to infrared. The lens system doubles as a back screen projection system for display of the indicator light.

A decorative, imitation candle effectively simulates a lighted wick in a darkened environment by location of a light source at the tip of an imitation wick. The light source is provided by an LED located at the tip of the wick for direct viewing in order to obtain maximum brightness and high contrast to an observer in a darkened environment. The light source and its support structure are incorporated into the imitation wick so that they do not detract from the imitation candle's realism when the imitation candle is viewed from the side or from above under higher ambient lighting.

A motion sensor incorporates an internal light source, typically a super bright LED and an optical projection system visible to an observer standing in the motion sensor coverage zone(s) to simplify orientation of the sensor on installation. A multi-lens system or an arrangement of small windows in front of the LED projects a visible light pattern that mimics the detection pattern of the motion sensor to an observer standing in the detection zone and looking at the sensor.

A suction cup located on an axis has axially opposite front and rear ends. The front end is configured to adhere to a window pane by suction. A post extends along the axis rearward from the rear end and has axially spaced grooves. A bracket is configured to be mounted in any one of the grooves and to hold an item a set distance rearward from the post.

A motion sensor incorporates an internal light source, typically a super bright LED. A multi-lens system or an arrangement of small windows in front of the LED projects a visible light pattern that mimics the detection pattern of the motion sensor to an observer standing in the detection zone and looking at the sensor.

A decorative, imitation candle includes a simulated wick which generates the appearance of an open flame in a darkened environment. A light pipe is located at the expected location of the wick. The exposed end of the light pipe has a tip which produces a point like a light source with a glare effect to darkness accommodated eyes when the device is illuminated. The glare is interpreted as an open flame without the need for a flame shaped terminating structure which is visible when the imitation candle is unlit.
