Control modules for laser systems having auto-ranging and control capability

Flash suppressors having novel expansion features are disclosed. In one embodiment, a suppressor includes an attachment portion adapted to attach to a gun barrel, and a suppressor portion coupled to the attachment portion. The suppressor portion has a suppressor bore that is adapted to be aligned with a longitudinal axis of the gun barrel to allow a projectile from the gun barrel to pass therethrough. The suppressor bore is defined by at least one bore surface having at least one expansion groove disposed therein. The expansion groove may be partially-circumferentially disposed about the suppressor bore, or may include a plurality of expansion grooves. In another embodiment, a flash apparatus includes a suppressor portion having a plurality of longitudinally elongated members spaced apart about a circumference of the suppressor bore, each member being separated from adjacent elongated members by a longitudinal slot, at least one longitudinal slot having non-parallel sidewalls.

Flash suppressor apparatus and methods

Dual-function laser systems and methods are disclosed. In one implementation, an apparatus includes a laser source configured to emit a beam; an optical element spaced apart from the laser source; and a diffractive element positioned to diffract the beam to provide a diffracted beam to the optical element such that the optical element refracts the diffracted beam to form an approximately collimated central portion and a diverging outer portion.

Single laser illuminating and pointing systems

Flash suppressors having novel expansion features are disclosed. In one embodiment, a suppressor apparatus includes an attachment portion adapted to attach to a gun barrel, and a suppressor portion coupled to the attachment portion. The suppressor portion has a suppressor bore therethrough that is adapted to be aligned with a longitudinal axis of the gun barrel to allow a projectile from the gun barrel to pass therethrough. The suppressor bore is defined by at least one bore surface having at least one expansion groove disposed therein. The expansion groove may be partially-circumferentially disposed about the suppressor bore, or may include a plurality of expansion grooves. In another embodiment, a flash apparatus includes a suppressor portion having a plurality of longitudinally elongated members spaced apart about a circumference of the suppressor bore, each elongated member being separated from adjacent elongated members by a longitudinal slot, at least one longitudinal slot having non-parallel sidewalls.

The invention is a dual function laser device for use in night vision systems. The invention uses lenses to cause one portion of a laser beam to converge to a target point and another portion of the beam to diverge. The divergent portion is variable in size and illuminates a viewable area around the target point. Rather than use two lasers to create an illuminated view area around an illuminated target point, the invention uses a combination of a lens and a sub-aperture lens arrangement to create two illuminations from a single laser.

Dual function single laser

The invention is an improved image intensifier for night vision equipment. It includes an optical filter that is positioned between the phosphor output and eyepiece of the image intensifier. The filter is dichroic and limits light transmission to light that is substantially in the blue wave length. The filter minimizes reflections on the eye of the user that might otherwise be visible to others who are using night vision equipment.

In one, it is employed with a night vision system to make available additional energy which can be utilized by an image intensifier in the night vision system in prodcing a visual image of a target acquired by the night vision system.

The image intensifier (22) of night telescope (12) is protected by a deactivate circuit (FIG. 4) which is in series with an off-on switch (S) between a source of electrical energy (28) and the image intensifier (22). The light sensor (26) measures ambient light. If the light level is below a predetermined light level, at which it is safe to operate the image intensifier (22), the light sensor (26) does not conduct. This causes an amplifier circuit (A-1, A-2) to deliver a negative voltage to the base of a transistor (Q-1). This enables the transistor (Q-1) to transmit electrical current from the source (28) to the image intensifier (22). Whenever ambient light exceeds the predetermined light level, the photoconductive sensor (26) conducts. In response to this happening the amplifier circuit (A-1, A-2) delivers a positive voltage to the base of the transistor (Q-1). In response, the transistor (Q-1) becomes incapable of transmitting a current onto the image intensifier (22).

Light level responsive control for light intensifier in night vision

A relatively large diameter, sharply focused beam of invisible light is produced by a projector (10) for the purpose of lighting up a person, object, etc. to be viewed at night. The projector (10) is used in conjunction with a night vision telescope (12) which includes a light intensifier (88). The projector (10) includes a pulsating infrared LED, or a laser diode, adapted to produce a high intensity narrow beam of invisible light. This beam of invisible light is enlarged by a projection lens assembly (26) adapted to sharply focus the light into a collimated light beam of about the diameter of the projector housing (20). The light source (30) is pulsed on and off, and is on only about 10-20% of the time. When on it is illuminated by a high level current which would quickly burn out the light (30) if operated continuously. The intermittent operation of the light (30) at high current produces a nonflickering high intensity light beam. The projection lens (26) enlarges this beam and clearly focuses it, to produce a relatively large illuminating beam having a substantially large range of use.
