An encapsulated liquid crystal layer is patterned by placing a mask into contact with a coated substrate. The mask is held against the substrate, for example, by a vacuum, to form a seal. The assembly is submerged in a solvent to dissolve the exposed region of the encapsulated liquid crystal material.

Method and apparatus for patterning encapsulated liquid crystal layers

A method is disclosed for making a liquid crystal light valve in which the electro-optically active element is a liquid crystal composite sandwiched between two electrodes. The liquid crystal composite comprises plural volumes of liquid crystal material dispersed in a polymer matrix. By use of a tie layer, the problem of stress clearing is markedly reduced or eliminated. The tie layer material can be either a liquid crystal material or a telomer, crosslinkable or otherwise.

Method of making a liquid crystal light valve

Encapsulated liquid crystal material is made by mixing liquid crystals, a containment medium, and a carrier medium made of a water-miscible monohydric alcohol and water in the proportion between 5:95 and 60:40 weight/weight to form an emulsion; applying the emulsion onto a substrate and drying the emulsion to remove the carrier medium.

Method for making encapsulated liquid crystal material

Poly(aryl ether ketones) are stabilized against crosslinking and thermooxidative degradation at elevated temperatures, e.g. temperatures typically used to melt process the polymer, by incorporating therein a particulate molecular sieve, for example, a crystalline aluminosilicate, such as a synthetic zeolite. The amount of molecular sieve is preferably about 0.5 to about 5% by weight based on the weight of the poly(aryl ether ketone).
