A color image display device comprising arrays of structural color pixels, where said structural color pixels may be formed on a single substrate layer or multiple substrate layers and are patterned by selective material deposition to display a color image in accordance with input color images or patterns. The structural color pixels comprise a plurality of microstructures and/or nanostructures, including without limitation, diffraction gratings, sub-wavelength structures, to display colors in red, green, blue in RGB color space or cyan, magenta, yellow in CMY color space. Examples include methods of activating and/or deactivating structural pixels using selective material deposition onto at least one layer of the color display device to form a color image. Further examples include product labels, authentication devices and security documents carrying customized or personalized information and methods for their manufacture.

Color image display devices comprising structural color pixels that are selectively activated and/or deactivated by material deposition

A critical-path timing sensor detects set-up timing failures from a functional critical path to a path flip-flop. The functional critical path carries test data during test mode, and normal data during normal device operation. The path flip-flop's D input and Q output are compared by an exclusive-OR (XOR) gate and sampled by an early capture flip-flop that is clocked by a delayed clock, sampling D and Q just after the path flip-flop is clocked. When set-up time fails, D and Q differ just after the clock edge and a timing failure is latched. Timing failures activate a controller to increase VDD, while VDD is reduced in the absence of timing failures. Process variations are accounted for, allowing for lower power or faster operation. A margin delay between the functional critical path end and the early capture flip-flop detects timing failures before they occur in the path flip-flop.

Methods for rapidly fabricating color image display for any given color image from a prefabricated generic stamp comprising arrays of structural pixels. The pixels are composed of micro-gratings and/or sub-wavelength structures that give structural colors. Different methods based on micro-patterning techniques may be used to fabricate the color image display devices, including: 1) selectively masking the generic stamp and imprinting from the masked stamp; 2) imprinting from the generic stamp and thermal-optical patterning on an imprinted layer. The fabricated color image display device can further function as a stand-alone display device or a color image stamp for replicating multiple color image display devices.

Methods for fabricating color image display devices comprising structural color pixels from a generic stamp

A display media including a pixel layer containing subpixels for different optical bands composed of nano-scale structures and an intensity control layer that can pattern the luminance of the subpixels. The display media includes a substrate layer, a sub-wavelength substrate supported by the substrate layer and including subpixels, each subpixel defined by at least one sub-wavelength structure having at least one specific optical property including a specific optical band, at least two of the subpixels having a different specific optical property, and an intensity control layer to individually control an amount of luminance of each individual subpixel in a pattern. Some of the subpixels may have colors that define a color space, while some other subpixels may have an invisible radiation spectrum band. For example, the display media can allow both overt information (color images) and covert information to be embedded together with high density.

A security document is disclosed which includes an electrical circuit embedded in a document substrate, where the electrical circuit includes a power source with at least one electroactive polymer power generator, and an optical display including at least one electroluminescent display element and at least one nanohole array which forms a layer of the electroluminescent display element. Security features comprising nanohole arrays are also provided. A method of authenticating a security document is disclosed, including illuminating an encoded nanohole array in the security document with a focused light beam or laser light source emitting at least one defined wavelength of incident light, detecting a transmitted portion of the incident light transmitted through the nanohole array with an optoelectronic sensor, analyzing at least one wavelength of the transmitted portion of light to produce a detected signal, and comparing the detected signal with an authentication signal to authenticate the security document.

Security document with nano-optical display

A method of self-organizing sensor nodes in a wireless sensor network (WSN); a method of localizing mobile nodes in a WSN; and a method of self-calibrating a WSN are disclosed. The method of self-organizing sensor nodes in a WSN includes configuring sensor nodes to in turn broadcast consecutive messages at a plurality of pre-defined and incrementally increasing power levels; detecting receipt of the broadcasted messages at each of the sensor nodes and notifying a master node as to the identity of each sensor node receiving the broadcasted message and the power level at which it was received to define a detected neighborhood for each sensor node; determining relative locations of sensor nodes with the detected neighborhoods; and mapping relative locations of the sensor nodes by the master node based on results of the neighborhood detection and known locations of two anchor nodes.

System and method for self-calibrating, self-organizing and localizing sensors in wireless sensor networks

An apparatus for monitoring one or more than one biological parameter is provided. The apparatus comprises two or more than two layers, each layer comprising a flexible substrate, the two or more than two layers comprising two or more than two sensors for sensing the one or more than one biological parameter; a signal conditioning module in communication with one or more than one of the two or more than two sensors; a signal processor in communication with the signal conditioning module and producing a processed signal; a communication module in communication with the signal processor and transmitting the processed signal to a storage module, a display device, a host processing system, or a combination thereof; and a power module to provide power to the two or more than two sensors, the signal conditioning module, the signal processor, and the communication module.

Apparatus for signal detection, processing and communication

An ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC) capacitor is disclosed which includes a thin single layer non-hydrated ionic polymer substrate with conductive film electrodes applied to at least a portion of each side of the non-hydrated ionic polymer substrate. The disclosed capacitor is suited for providing thin capacitance structures made to substantially any desired dimensions and shape and may be particularly suited for short term power storage in low power electronics, sensors, micro-electronics, MEMs and high temperature applications. A method of manufacturing an IPMC capacitor is also disclosed including providing a thin single layer non-hydrated ionic polymer substrate, applying a conductive film electrode to both sides of the substrate, and attaching electrical connections to the electrodes. The disclosed method of manufacture may optionally also include heat curing the capacitor and coating the capacitor with at least one moisture-resistant protective coating layer.

An apparatus including a three dimensional sub-wavelength structure for electromagnetic applications including a surface layer formed of a metal or semiconductor film, one or more additional layers stacked to the surface layer, one or more sub-wavelength apertures in the surface layer, and one or more cavities nearby the one or more sub-wavelength apertures. The size of each aperture is smaller than the wavelength of the electromagnetic field incident upon the three dimensional sub-wavelength structure. The one or more cavities provide accessibility for a dielectric material within and below each aperture. Each cavity may also contain at least one metal or semiconductor sub-wavelength particle. A method of fabricating a three dimensional sub-wavelength structure is also provided.

Security document with electroactive polymer power source and nano-optical display

A light emitting/charge storage device is disclosed. The light emitting/charge storage device includes an organic light emitting diode (OLED) portion and at least one charge storage portion electrically and physically connected therewith. The OLED portion includes a first anode layer, a first cathode layer, and an electroluminescent layer disposed at least partially between the first anode layer and the first cathode layer. The at least one charge storage portion includes a second anode layer, a second cathode layer, and an ionic polymer dielectric layer disposed at least partially between the second anode layer and the second cathode layer, and/or a thin film battery layer. A light emitting/charge storage system is also disclosed. Certain embodiments of the device and system of the invention may provide integrated illumination and charge storage in a unitary stacked layered structure with flexible mechanical characteristics.
