An optical integrated light source includes a plurality of topological ring resonators. Each of the topological ring resonators is defined by an interface between two distinct periodic structures having different topological invariants such that a one-way edge mode may be excited along the interface. A magnetic material is arranged to interact with the plurality of topological ring resonators such that the optical integrated light source is structured and configured to generate plural beams each carrying large orbital angular momentum.

System and method for topological lasers generating and multiplexing optical beams with unbounded orbital angular momenta

A laser source includes a topological cavity for nonreciprocal lasing, a magnetic material and an optical waveguide. The magnetic material is arranged to interact with the topological cavity. The optical waveguide is arranged to receive light extracted from the topological cavity upon breaking of time-reversal symmetry in the topological cavity.

A bound states in the continuum (BIC) surface emitting laser includes a light emitter configured to generate BIC light waves. The laser also includes an array of holes with equal radii extending through the light emitter such that light emitted by the light emitter upon receipt of power is emitted as a coherent vortex beam at an angle to a surface normal of the light emitter that is determined at least in part by the radius of the holes in the array.

Systems and methods according to present principles provide, at room temperature, a bound state in the continuum laser that harnesses optical modes residing in the radiation continuum but nonetheless may possess arbitrarily high quality factors. These counterintuitive cavities are based on resonantly trapped symmetry-compatible modes that destructively interfere. Such systems and methods may be applied towards coherent sources with intriguing topological properties for optical trapping, biological imaging, and quantum communication.

Provided are systems and methods for cloaking an object on a ground plane. A thin dielectric metasurface is used to reshape the wavefronts distorted by the object in order to mimic the reflection pattern of a flat ground plane. To achieve such 'carpet cloaking', the reflection angle is made equal to the incident angle everywhere on the object by providing a graded metasurface with a designed phase gradient. This provides additional phase to the wavefronts to compensate for the phase difference amongst lightpaths induced by the geometrical distortion. One exemplary metasurface is described which is designed for the microwave range using highly sub-wavelength dielectric resonators. The approach can be applied to hide any scatterer under a metasurface of class C1 (first derivative continuous) on a groundplane not only in the microwave regime, but also at other frequencies, including higher frequencies, up to the visible.
