The present application pertains to a universal bottom hole assembly node module. The module may comprise an azimuthal resistivity module, an azimuthal gamma module, a pressure while drilling module, or any combination thereof. A communication system may be configured to provide two way communication between two or more components of a bottom hole assembly, for example, between a rotary steerable system and a measurement while drilling system. This advantageously allows real time geosteering, well control, hydraulics analysis for drilling optimization, and/or evaluation of motor efficiency.

The present embodiments disclose a downhole communication technology involving slotted collar allowing electromagnetic waves to reach inserted probe receiver assembly. One embodiment shows transmitter/receiver as part of At Bit tool.

Systems and apparatus for downhole communication

Electrical wet connection (EWC) with multiple power and communication lines for connecting Logging While Drilling tools (LWD) and/or Measurement While Drilling tools (MWD) is described. The contacts between the modules may be made by, for example, using pressure bulkheads to ensure protection of the tools if the pressure protection is reduced or lost. The contacts may be locked together in a convenient manner to eliminate downhole vibrations and/or shocks. The may make the signal transmission quality approaching, as good as, or even better than wireline tools. The connection may be sealed from the well muds under high pressure and this protection may be enhanced such as by doubling or even tripling for extreme reliability in difficult environments. The designs described herein may advantageously allow for a large amount in collar lengths to be compensated and/or provide two degrees of freedom-rotational and/or may be longitudinal for ready connection on the well site.

A resistivity-measuring sensor disposable within a drillstring includes a sensor body having a longitudinal axis, wherein the sensor body is separable from and disposable in the drillstring at a radially offset distance from the longitudinal axis of the drillstring. The sensor further includes a transmitting antenna disposed along a length of the sensor body, a receiving antenna disposed along a length of the sensor body, and an electronics section contained within the sensor body for generating and receiving signals to and from the transmitting and receiving antennas.

A rotary steerable bottom hole assembly includes a drill bit disposed at a distal end thereof, and azimuthal resistivity antennas and electronics configured to measure a distance to a formation boundary.

A rotary steerable system includes a non-rotating housing, azimuthal resistivity antennas and electronics, disposed within the non-rotating housing, configured to measure a distance to an approaching upper or lower formation boundary, and a control module configured to steer a drill bit along a well path and, based on measurements from the azimuthal resistivity antennas, to steer the housing away from the approaching upper or lower formation boundary and thereby maintain a certain distance between the steerable housing and upper or lower formation boundary.

A tool for communicating data between multiple locations downhole includes a tool body, a first antenna including at least one electrode disposed within a wall and electrically insulated from the tool body, and an electronic circuit configured to generate an encoded electrical signal and propagate the encoded signal through the electrode into a medium surrounding the tool, and a second antenna coupled to the tool body, and an electronic circuit configured to receive an electrical signal induced by the second antenna.

Apparatus and methods for communicating downhole data

A modular resistivity sensor disposable in a drillstring having a drill bit on a distal end for drilling a wellbore in a formation, includes a sensor body having a longitudinal axis radially offset from a longitudinal axis of the drillstring, one or more transmitting coil antennas disposed along a length of the sensor body, one or more receiving coil antennas disposed along a length of the sensor body, and a calibrating device configured to calibrate signals generated from the receiving coil antennas.

A closed-loop method for geosteering includes acquiring logging while drilling data and processing the logging while drilling data downhole while drilling to obtain a geosteering correction (a correction to the drilling direction based upon the LWD measurements). The geosteering correction is further processed downhole to obtain new steering tool settings which are then applied to the steering tool to change the direction of drilling. These steps are typically repeated numerous times without the need for uphole processing or surface intervention.

Downhole closed-loop geosteering methodology

A drilling system includes integral drill bit body and logging while drilling tool body portions. There are no threads between the drill bit and the LWD tool. In one exemplary embodiment the drilling system includes a unitary tool body, i.e., a tool body formed from a single work piece. In another exemplary embodiment the drill bit body portion is welded to the LWD tool body portion. At least one LWD sensor is deployed in the drill bit. The drilling system enables multiple LWD sensors to be deployed in and near the bit (e.g., on both the side and bottom faces of the bit). The absence a threaded connection facilitates the placement of electrical connectors, LWD sensors, and electronic control circuitry at the bit.

A method and apparatus for estimating one or more formation properties using in-situ measurements conducted at or near a coring location include a coring tool adapted to cut a core sample in a formation, a member having a distal end that engages a borehole wall substantially adjacent the core sample, and a drive device that engages the member to the borehole wall with a force sufficient to estimate formation strength.

In-situ formation strength testing with coring

Estimating formation properties includes a member coupled to a carrier, the member having a distal end that engages a borehole wall location, the distal end having a curved surface having a radius of curvature in at least one dimension about equal to or greater than a borehole radius. A drive device extends the first extendable member with a force sufficient to determine formation strength, and at least one measurement device providing an output signal indicative of the formation property. Articulating couplings may be used to change an angle of extension of the extendable member.
