A method for cutting belt material to accurate dimensions and for forming the mating edges of a puzzle cut joint for joining the ends of the belt material to form a continuous belt for use in a document processing application. The belt material is maintained in accurate registration a punch press by optical sensors at each station. A vacuum pickup is constructed to move the belt material from a precision cutter to a punch press and maintains the material in tensioned condition to facilitate accurate operation of the punch press.

Method and system for cutting puzzle cut petals in belts

An apparatus and method for cutting belt material to accurate dimensions and for forming the mating edges of a puzzle cut joint for joining the ends of the belt material to form a continuous belt for use in a document processing application. The workpiece is maintained in accurate registration a punch press by optical sensors at each station. A vacuum pickup is constructed to move the belt material from a precision cutter to a punch press and maintains the material in tensioned condition to facilitate accurate operation of the punch press.

A valve packing compression apparatus and method of use therefor are disclosed for compressing packing rings into a stuffing box of a valve bonnet which has a gland follower. The compression apparatus includes a base plate configured to support and consistently position the valve bonnet. A rocker arm is pivotally attached to the base plate. A hydraulic ram is also attached to the base plate and extends to contact one end of, and thereby pivot, the rocker arm. The opposite end of the rocker arm includes a pair of tines which straddle a yoke support arm of the valve bonnet and align with the gland follower. Hydraulic fluid is provided to the ram by a hydraulic pump through a pressure regulator. When the hydraulic ram is activated to extend, the tines contact the gland follower, thereby compressing the packing rings a predetermined amount.

Valve packing compression apparatus

An apparatus is provided for disposing a sheet adjacent a flexible member. The apparatus comprises a mechanism for transporting the sheet to a loading position and a mechanism, located adjacent the loading position, for receiving and holding the sheet. The receiving and holding mechanism is capable of moving the sheet into juxtaposition with a surface of the flexible member so that the sheet contacts the surface of the flexible member upon being released by the receiving and holding mechanism. The apparatus further comprises a mechanism for wrapping the flexible member about itself with the sheet interposed between opposed surfaces of the flexible member.

Apparatus for handling a sheet of separator material

An apparatus is provided for wrapping a sheet about an external surface of a flexible member to package the flexible member. The apparatus comprises a mechanism for receiving and clamping a free end of the sheet and a first portion of the flexible member, as well as a mechanism for spacing a second portion of the flexible member a preselected distance from the first portion thereof. The apparatus further comprises a mechanism for moving the receiving and clamping mechanism to urge the spacing mechanism toward the receiving and clamping mechanism so that movement of the receiving and clamping mechanism wraps the flexible member and sheet with the sheet being wrapped about the external surface of the flexible member.

Apparatus for wrapping a flexible member

A process and apparatus for fabricating belts are disclosed in which the leading edge of a web is conveyed from a supply roll into a belt loop forming station, the web is cut a predetermined distance from the leading edge to form a web segment having the leading edge at one end and a trailing edge at the opposite end, the lower surface of the web adjacent the leading edge is inverted, the lower surface of the web adjacent the trailing edge is inverted, the inverted leading edge and the inverted trailing edge are overlapped to form a loop of the web segment loosely suspended from the joint formed by the overlapped leading edge and trailing edge, the loop of the web segment at the belt loop forming station is transferred to an anvil, the loop of the web segment on the anvil is conveyed to a welding station and the overlapped leading edge and trailing edge are welded together on the anvil to form a belt welded at the joint.

Apparatus for preparing belts

Process for preparing belts

A microfiche having one or more frames to be deleted is mounted in accurate registration and alignment on a microfiche deck, and a light is energized in the deck underneath each frame of the microfiche to be deleted. The operator then moves a knife carriage mounted on an 'X-Y' detented slide system and having a solenoid-operated knife blade, on top of the microfiche, to the proper position with respect to each frame to be deleted, and then energizes the solenoid to cut that frame from an adjacent frame on the same filmstrip. After each edge of the frame is cut, the operator uses a spatula to pry up an end of the frame which is then grasped and stripped off of the microfiche. After all of the unwanted frames are deleted, the microfiche is removed from the deck.

Microfiche deleter method

A microfiche mounter is fully automatic and uses preprogrammed instructions from either a computer or a filmstrip in placing the image frames of the filmstrip in predetermined destination regions of a transparent base to make or update a microfiche. The mounter receives instructions and displays information enabling an operator to select the proper base for placement on the machine. The mounter then advances a filmstrip into a transfer device, cuts off a proper length of the filmstrip, pivots the transfer device over the base, moves the base in X and Y coordinates to register the destination region of the base under the transfer device, insures accurate registry between the base and the transfer device, and presses the filmstrip from the transfer device into engagement with the base for adhesively securing the filmstrip to the base. All this is done fully automatically, and the machine also has the capacity for manual operation of each step or keyboard entry of mounting instructions. The machine also switches between different modes of operation, monitors its operations, and displays indications of events or errors occurring during operation. It is faster, more efficient, and much more accurate than previous equipment for making microfiche.

Microfiche mounter

Microfilm is converted into microfiche by feeding the film through a cutter, cutting the film into one or more frames, and then mounting the frame(s) upon a transparent microfiche base. The microfilm has a pair of adhesive strips along the top and bottom edge of its bottom surface for attaching the microfilm to the base. The microfiche base is mounted on a fiche deck by means of registration pins; lights are provided below the fiche deck for informing the operator where to place the frames on the base; and a margin grid having guide bars overlies the base to aid the operator in mounting the frames in precise alignment on the base. The film cutter removes a slice from the cut frames to aid the operator to mount the frames. The microfiche is updated by mounting all 'updatable' frames in the same row and pre-cut from each adjacent frame. A solenoid and its push pin are positioned beneath each updatable frame and a clearance opening for each push pin is located in the microfiche base. To update a microfiche, the proper solenoid is energized to remove one edge of the frame to be updated from the base, the frame is then completely removed, and a new updated frame is substituted for the outdated, removed frame.
