A wavelength selector in an optical scanner is operative for selecting a first laser beam having a predetermined wavelength to produce a first scan pattern, and for selecting a second laser beam having a different wavelength to produce a second scan pattern. The scan patterns have a different number of scan lines. The selected scan pattern is scanned over indicia, e.g., a bar code symbol, to be read.

Adaptive bar code scanner

A miniaturized electro-optical, retro-reflective scanning module. The module has a base, a first circuit board, and a second circuit board mounted substantially orthogonal to the first circuit board. The base supports a light emitter for producing a scanning beam and optical elements for directing and collecting light energy. The emitted beam reflects off a fold mirror onto a reflector mounted on a drive for oscillation. The oscillating reflector, in turn, redirects the beam onto an indicia being read. The reflected light is reflected off the oscillating reflector and directed to the collection mirror before reaching a detector. The detector included in the module senses light reflected from an indicia scanned by the beam. The reflector is driven by an electro-magnetiz driven system, including a flexure and an actuation arm.

Retro-reflective scan module for electro-optical readers

An electro-optical, retroreflective scanning module has a base, a first circuit board, and a second circuit board mounted orthogonal to the first circuit board. The base supports a light emitter for producing a scanning beam. The beam reflects off a generally planar scan mirror affixed to a stationary concave collection mirror, to a reflector mounted on a drive for oscillation. A detector included in the module senses light reflected from an indicia scanned by the beam. The reflected light is reflected off the reflector and directed to the collection mirror before reaching the detector. The beam and the field of view of the detector are simultaneously scanned.

Retroreflective scan module for electro-optical readers

A battery pack is detachably secured by a snap-type action to a handle of a generally gun-shaped scanning head in a system for electro-optically reading coded indicia, such as bar code symbols. The battery pack includes a set of rechargeable batteries mounted in a casing.

A bar code scanner and method for scanning a bar code symbol that splits a light beam using a liquid crystal device and directs the split light beams toward a bar code symbol using a moveable mirror. An optical scanning system for reading indicia of differing light reflectivity has an optical scan module which is adapted to be mounted on a finger of a user. A first peripheral module, preferably in the form of a wrist watch, has a receiver which detects the reflected light. A second peripheral module, mounted on the other arm of the user, communicates with the first module by radio frequency transmission. According to other aspects of the invention, the light detector may be mounted in a housing which is separate and part from the optical scan module. According to another aspect, a laser pointer or scanner is mounted to a ring which is arranged to be worn on a single finger of the user.

Portable optical scanning and pointing systems

A scanning device incorporates a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL). The laser diode may be mounted directly on an Si substrate which is adapted for movement to produce a scan pattern. A collimating lens may be directly mounted on the emitting surface of the laser. A plurality of lasers may be mounted on the substrate and operated in sequence without movement of the substrate to produce the effect of a scan. The scanning device emits visible or invisible light towards a target such as a bar code and a detector (mounted on the same or an adjacent substrate) senses the light reflected by the target to produce data which is decoded for further processing. A VCSEL uses low current and emits light from a relatively large area so that a relatively large amount of light is emitted for relatively small heat generation.

A bar code reader for reading a symbol located at a distance from the laser comprises an array of groups of reading elements and an array of selectable liquid crystal elements. Each of the groups of reading elements have an associated predetermined operating focal distance. At least one liquid crystal element corresponds to each group of reading elements. In the bar code reader, a device activates a selected liquid crystal element to transmit light to a selected group of reading elements. In this way, the reading elements can operate at a predetermined, fixed operating focal distance.
