The present invention provides a removable orifice plate securing structure for use in conjunction with a conventional ink jet printer printhead assembly. The orifice plate securing structure comprises an orifice plate mounting member having a rear end portion disposed in an opposing relationship with the front end surface of the printhead body portion, a front side surface and an opening extending outwardly from the rear end portion to the front side surface. The orifice plate mounting member is configured to removable secure the orifice plate between the front side surface of the orifice plate mounting member and the front end surface of the printhead body portion in an operative alignment position with the ink receiving chambers. The opening is configured to allow ink from the ink discharge orifices to operatively pass outwardly from the orifice plate mounting member. The orifice plate securing structure also comprises a securing means for removable securing the orifice plate mounting member and the orifice plate to the printhead body portion in an operative alignment position with the ink receiving chambers.

A piezoelectric ink jet printhead is formed from two rectangular blocks of PZT material each having interdigitated series of grooves and ribs formed on one side thereof. The blocks are relatively positioned to precisely align the outer sides of their rib portions in a facing relationship to form a printhead body having therein a spaced series of ink receiving channels defined by the facing groove portions of the two blocks and laterally bounded by internal sidewalls defined by the aligned rib portions of the blocks. The channels open outwardly through front and rear end portions of the body. An orifice plate is operatively secured over the front ends of the channels, and the rear ends of the channels are appropriately sealed. To transmit piezoelectric driving signals to the internal sidewalls a cable is provided with spaced, longitudinally extending series of metal traces formed on the opposite sides of its dielectric body, with cutout areas being formed in a front end portion of the cable between its traces to form finger portions on the front end of the cable. The finger portions of the cable are positioned between the facing sides of the ribs within the printhead body, in precise alignment therewith, and are conductively secured thereto. The metal coated opposite sides of each cable finger are electrically coupled to one another by a metal material extending through a longitudinally spaced series of openings formed in the finger.

Method of fabricating a piezoelectric ink jet printhead assembly

Disclosed are an ink jet printhead and method of manufacturing the same. The method of manufacturing comprises the steps of: (1) coating a substantially flat lower surface of an upper piezoelectric member with a first conductive coating, (2) coating a substantially flat upper surface of a lower piezoelectric member with a second conductive coating, (3) depositing a conductive solder over the first conductive coating, (4) forming a first elongated indentation in the lower surface, the first indentation extending through the first coating and into the upper member, (5) joining the solder with the second conductive coating by placing the upper piezoelectric member over the lower piezoelectric member, (6) heating the upper and lower piezoelectric members to thereby melt the solder and (7) cooling the solder, the solder electrically and mechanically joining the first coating to the second coating, the first indentation and the upper surface thereby forming the channel, the channel capable of containing ink and capable of ejecting ink therefrom when an electric current distorts the upper and lower piezoelectric members.

Method of manufacturing ink jet printheads

Color flat screen displays and methods of fabricating color flat screen displays. Color flat screen displays described herein comprise at least two liquid crystal display panels, each of said panels containing pixels which are substantially aligned, adhesive gaskets formed on a periphery of one side of a first of the two liquid crystal display panels for providing a mechanical connection between the first panel and the second liquid crystal display panel, and a cavity disposed between the first and second liquid crystal display panels formed by the thickness of the adhesive gasket, the cavity being adapted to receive a material for optically matching pixels in the first panel to pixels in the second panel. Color flat screen displays described herein allow for efficient and economical fabrication and also are rugged and sturdy due to the new fabrication methods which are employed.

Methods for adhering multiple stack liquid crystal display panels

A backlighted liquid crystal display (LCD) system with a light source and a light pipe which is separated from the LCD panel by an air gap to facilitate uniform brightness of the viewing area. The air gap effectively blocks conductive heat transfer from the light source to the LCD panel. The LCD panel is enframed within a metal frame that serves as a heat sink which prevents a temperature gradient across the LDC panel. The light source is fastened to the light pipe and remaining exposed areas of the light source are covered with an insulating material to trap heat and prevent heat radiation to the LCD panel. A sheet of heat conductive material, which lines the inner back surface of a plastic enclosure surrounding the LCD display assembly, serves to equally distribute heat throughout the inner area of the enclosure. The exposed surface of the heat conductive lining is preferably blackened. Optionally, the heat conductive shield may be included to capture heat radiating from the light source and convey this heat to the heat conductive lining. Insulating material is placed between the heat conductive shield and the metal frame of the LCD panel to prevent heat transfer to the LCD panel.

A protective heat sink for an electronic component dissipates heat generated thereby. A first heat conductive member is mounted to the top side of the electronic component. A protective cap having an aperture formed therein is mounted on the printed circuit board such that it extends over the electronic component and the first heat conductive member. A second heat conductive member is mounted to the first heat conductive member and extends through the aperture in the cap such that heat generated by the electronic component is transmitted to the first heat conductive member and then dissipated to the environment by the second heat conductive member.

A multilayer substrate provides predetermined connections to and between a plurality of integrated circuit chips mounted thereon. A plurality of layers mounted on a surface of a substrate has a plurality of layers comprising a plurality of dielectric layers, a first plurality of metallic layers, and a second plurality of metallic layers. The first plurality of metallic layers has a predetermined pattern for forming the predetermined connections, these being the x-lines and y-lines. Each of the second plurality of metallic layers provides a predetermined voltage level to the integrated circuit chips, and each of the second metallic layers has a screen-like structure. Each of the first and second metallic layers is insulated from the other metallic layers by one of the dielectric layers, except for desired interconnections between the x-lines y-lines, and power layer (or power plane).

Structure of conductive layers in multilayer substrates for minimizing

An improved strain relief device is connectable to a cable end portion to resiliently resist both bending and torsional loads imposed thereon. The strain relief device is formed from a resilient material and includes a tubular body portion which receives and is fixedly secured to the cable end portion to be protected. Projecting radially outwardly from the outer side surface of the tubular body are a circumferentially spaced series of elongated, resilient rib members which extend lengthwise in a direction parallel to the axis of the strain relief body. The ribs taper radially outwardly along their lengths and collectively function to progressively resist both bending and torsional loads imposed upon the cable end portion in a manner maintaining a generally linear relationship between the bending and torsional loads on the cable end portion and the resulting axial lengths of the strain relief body portion being bent or twisted. In a preferred embodiment of the strain relief device, an electrical connector member is formed integrally with one end of the strain relief body and may be operatively connected to the complementarily configured electrical connector structure to conductively link the same to the cable end portion protected by the externally ribbed strain relief body.

A gas distribution system provides a gas to a chamber comprising a feed tube, having a tube-like configuration with an input and an output. The gas supplied to the input escapes via the output, the output being configured to have a first and second slot opening. The first slot opening has a predetermined first length along the length of the feed tube and has a predetermined first width across the length of the feed tube, and the second slot opening has a predetermined second length along the length of the feed tube and has a predetermined second width across the length of the feed tube. The second slot is contiguous with and abuts the first slot, and further the predetermined second width is smaller than the predetermined first width. The first and second slot configuration provides the gas at the output at a predetermined pressure, the predetermined pressure being reduced from an area near the output. A plenum, having a rectangular box-like configuration with a definable predetermined length and also having an opening corresponding in configuration to the output, receives the gas escaping from the output of the feed tube to temporarily contain the gas in a chamber formed by the plenum. The plenum further has a plurality of orifices such that the gas escaping from the orifices provides a predetermined spray pattern of the gas within the chamber along the length of the plenum, the length of the feed tube and the predetermined length of the plenum being parallel to each other.

Gas distribution system for muffle-type furnaces

A furnace for firing a non-precious metal paste including organic material, comprising a furnace enclosure, tube-like in shape, having a definable length. First and second ends of the furnace enclosure is open forming an entrance and exit, respectively. A cross-section across the length of the furnace enclosure has a flat base, a first and second vertical wall at each end of the flat base, and a roof, the shape of the roof being essentially the upper half of an ellipse. The interior chamber of the furnace is divided across the length of the furnace enclosure into a burnout zone and a firing zone, the entrance leading to the burnout zone, and the exit being nearest the firing zone. A sparging element distributes a mixture of an inert gas and at least one other gas within the burnout zone, wherein the other gas supports burnout of the organic material. A distributing element inserts an inert gas in the firing zone in the interior chamber of the furnace such that the non-precious metal is sintered in an inert atmosphere. A barrier element, providing a barrier such that the gas mixture of the burnout zone and the inert gas and the firing zone, are separated, thereby dividing the interior chamber of the furnace into the burnout zone and the firing zone. An exhaust means in the burnout zone where most smoke is produced as a result of the burnout of the organic material.

A squeegee is utilized in a screen process printer for microcircuits and components thereof. The type is one in which the squeegee and a flat stationary screen are mounted with the squeegee movable and in a wiping action makes contact with the screen so as to press a paste through openings of the screen in a predetermined pattern onto an adjacent substrate. The squeegee comprises a cylindrically shaped object of a predetermined length having a surface covering made of a resiliently deformable material. Further, the squeegee has an external cross-sectional geometric pattern such that a first surface is pushed against the paste in the wiping action. A lower edge of the first surface is above the surface of the screen a predetermined distance, and the first surface is at a predetermined fixed angle with the screen thereby causing a spreading action of the paste on the screen surface. The geometric pattern further has a second surface whereby a lower edge of the second surface is in pressure contact with the screen, and further wherein the angle of the second surface to the screen is less than the angle of the first surface to the screen, thereby providing a high hydraulic pressure forcing the paste into the screen openings.

An improved air distribution system for cooling electronic components mounted on printed circuit boards. The system includes an air plenum chamber of rectangular cross section. Openings are formed in the side walls of the chamber to permit air under pressure from within the chamber to flow outwardly in a direction substantially normal to the outer surfaces of the side walls and over the components to be cooled. A baffle in the form of a thin sheet of metal is mounted in the plenum substantially parallel to the side walls to divide the interior into two substantially equal portions. A large number of small round holes are formed through the baffle the area of the holes occupying substantially 36 percent of the total area of the baffle. An air pump supplies air under pressure to the interior of the plenum chamber. The baffle modifies the pressure distribution and air flow within the chamber so that the velocity of air through the openings formed in the side walls does not substantially vary with the position of the openings along the length of the plenum.
