The invention concerns a method for sorting mail items, said sorting being carried out base on characteristics located on the face of the mail items and by a sorting machine which sorts said explored and recognized characteristics. In order to ensure continuous final sorting in a sorting machine whereof the number of separation racks is less than the number of final directions, the input mail items are pre-sorted according to a pre-sorting plan. Simultaneously, final sorting operations are executed on the machine, the pre-sorted mail items being re-inserted in the sorting machine to be subjected therein to a final sorting.

Method for sorting mail items

The invention relates to the distribution of mail items with information on the surface of the mail items. Distribution occurs successively by means of various sorting machines. Sorting in particular is carried out in a succession of operations for the last point of distribution. According to the invention, distribution points are determined once the mail items have been received in the first sorting machine and the thicknesses of the mail items are measured by optical scanning of the mail item surfaces. Mail item thicknesses allocated to the distribution points are registered, stored and statistically prepared if required. Optimized sort programs are then calculated for sorting machines assigned to the various distribution points based on information regarding thickness, and the mail items are distributed accordingly. The optimized sort programs and data on determined thickness alone can be transmitted to the sorting machines assigned to the various distribution points so that the subsequent sort program can be drawn up.

Method and device for distributing mail items

A method for coding mailing items, in which a determination of the surface available for applying an unambiguous code to arriving mailing items is conducted and an application of the unambiguous code with a number of code signs that is adapted to the respectively determined surface available for coding is performed.

Method for coding mailing items

A process of the type disclosed according to DE 196 50 875 for sorting mailings having different properties by using sorting machines not suitable for all properties of the mailings. The unsuitable mailings receive an identification (ID) marking and their sensed distribution information is stored under this ID marking. As representing each non-processible mailing, a processible substitute is added to the stack of substitutes being assigned one of the non-processible mailings, in each case by means of an ID marking. Then, the processible mailings and the substitutes are sorted according to the associated distribution information. After sorting, the non-processible mailings are brought into a sequence appropriate for sorting on the basis of the ID markings located on them and the associated substitutes.
