A length or strand of resilient material is formed into a continuous ring having multiple tissue-engaging portions for engaging and spreading eyeball tissue segments apart. The strand is formed with elongated straight sides joined by corner portions which are enlarged in directions transverse to the length dimension of each adjacent side. The corner portions constitute the tissue-engaging portions and have top and bottom sections and a connecting section that forms a gap for receiving the tissue. Each side of the ring extends from a bottom section of one corner to a top section of an adjacent corner. When the ring is deployed, the tissue is captured in the gaps at the corners of the ring and also is engaged along each side as that side transitions from a position situated below the tissue to a position situated above the issue.

Expansion ring for eyeball tissue

A method of implanting a continuous iris-expanding ring in an eye involves ejecting the continuous iris-expanding ring from a distal end of a cannula toward an iris of the eye, securing a distal portion of the continuous iris-expanding ring device ring to the iris of the eye, and securing a proximal portion of the continuous iris-expanding ring to the iris of the eye. The continuous iris-expanding ring is in a collapsed configuration in the cannula prior to being ejected and in an expanded configuration when the proximal portion and the distal portion of the continuous iris-expanding ring are secured to the iris of the eye and extend across the pupil.

Ring used in a small pupil phacoemulsification procedure

An iris-expanding device injector assembly is described. The iris-expanding device injector assembly has a handle, a slider and/or button coupled with the handle and configured to slide with respect to the handle, a cannula coupled with the handle, the cannula configured to slide in to and out from a holder containing an iris-expanding device, and a hook housed within the cannula.

Implantation assembly for an iris-expanding device

A ring that can maintain a pupil in an extended position during an ophthalmic procedure. The ring has a plurality of loops that capture iris tissue. The ring is configured to extend the pupil when iris tissue is inserted into each loop. An ophthalmic procedure such as phacoemulsification can then be performed on the patient. The ring has a center opening that provides a wide view of the ocular chamber during the procedure.

Implantation assemblies for an iris-expanding device comprising an iris-expanding device holder and a holder body, as well as iris-expanding device holders are provided. These assemblies and devices are configured for an iris-expanding device that can maintain a pupil in an extended position during an ophthalmic procedure such as phacoemulsification.

Methods of implanting an iris-expanding medical device in an eye. The methods can use an inserter which includes an inserter handle and a cannula attached to the inserter handle. Once inserted, the iris-expending medical device can maintain a pupil in an extended position during an ophthalmic procedure such as phacoemulsification.
