A coating system and coating method for damping vibration in an airfoil of a rotating component of a turbomachine. The coating system includes a metallic coating on a surface of the airfoil, and a ceramic coating overlying the metallic coating. The metallic coating contains metallic particles dispersed in a matrix having a metallic and/or intermetallic composition. The metallic particles are more ductile than the matrix, and have a composition containing silver and optionally tin. The method involves ion plasma cleaning the surface of the airfoil before depositing the metallic coating and then the ceramic coating.

Method for vibrational damping of gas turbine engine airfoils

An apparatus for depositing a ceramic coating on a component. The apparatus includes an evaporation source containing multiple different oxide compounds, at least one of the oxide compounds having a vapor pressure that is higher than the remaining oxide compounds, to deposit on the component a coating of the multiple oxide compounds. The apparatus further includes a device for introducing the evaporation source into a coating chamber, a device for suspending the component near the evaporation source, a device for projecting a high-energy beam on the evaporation source to melt and form a vapor cloud of the oxide compounds of the evaporation source, a device capable of preventing the vapor cloud from contacting and condensing on the component, and a device for moving the preventing device to allow the vapor cloud to contact and condense on the component.

Coating system and method for vibrational damping of gas turbine engine airfoils

A thermal barrier coating, or TBC, and method for forming the TBC. The TBC is formed of a thermal-insulating material that contains yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) alloyed with at least a third oxide. The TBC is formed to also contain elemental carbon, and may potentially contain carbides and/or a carbon-containing gas that forms from the thermal decomposition of carbon. The TBC is characterized by lower density and thermal conductivity, high temperature stability and improved mechanical properties. To exhibit the desired effect, the third oxide is more particularly one that increases the lattice strain energy of the TBC microstructure as a result of having an ion size that is sufficiently different than a zirconium ion.

Thermal barrier coating and process therefor

A thermal barrier coating (TBC) and method for forming the TBC () on a component () characterized by a stabilized microstructure that resists grain growth, sintering and pore coarsening or coalescence during high temperature excursions. The TBC () contains elemental carbon and/or a carbon-containing gas that increase the amount of porosity () initially within the TBC () and form additional fine closed porosity () within the TBC () during subsequent exposures to high temperatures. A first method involves incorporating elemental carbon precipitates by evaporation into the TBC microstructure. A second method is to directly incorporate an insoluble gas, such as a carbon-containing gas, into an as-deposited TBC () and then partially sinter the TBC () to entrap the gas and produce fine stable porosity within the TBC ().

Thermal barrier coating on a surface

A process for depositing a ceramic coating on a component. The process involves a technique for evaporating an evaporation source containing multiple different oxide compounds, at least one of the oxide compounds having a vapor pressure that is higher than the remaining oxide compounds, to deposit a coating of the multiple oxide compounds. A high energy beam is projected onto the evaporation source to melt and form a vapor cloud of the oxide compounds of the evaporation source, while preventing the vapor cloud from contacting and condensing on the component during an initial phase in which the relative amount of the one oxide compound in the vapor cloud is greater than its relative amount in the evaporation source. During a subsequent phase in which the relative amount of the one oxide compound in the vapor cloud has decreased to something approximately equal to its relative amount in the evaporation source, the vapor cloud is allowed to contact and condense on the component to form the coating.

Vapor deposition process

The invention relates to the production of protective coatings for parts of gas turbines and internal combustion engines which are to be subjected to thermal loading. A coating formed in accordance with the invention has a chemical composition and structure gradient across its thickness and an outer ceramic layer. The coating is obtained by electron beam heating of a mixture of metals (alloys) and oxides which have different vapor pressures at the evaporation temperature, the mixture and an underlying ceramic ingot being serially evaporated and subsequently condensed on the part to be coated.

An electron gun for producing a beam of electrons has an elongated, linear thermionic cathode and a focusing electrode. The opposite ends of the cathode are engaged by adjustable holders which enable the spatial separation between the cathode and focusing electrode to be easily varied. The focusing electrode is electrically isolated from the cathode whereby fine tuning of the electron beam may be accomplished by varying the potential difference between the focusing electrode and cathode.

Method of producing carbon-containing materials by electron beam vacuum

This invention relates to a method and apparatus for developing a metallic carbide coating on a substrate. The invention involves providing an enclosed chamber with sources of carbon in the form of a blank and an ingot of a metal material taken from the group including titanium, boron and silicon. Electron beam guns are employed to heat the carbon source causing a carbon vapor flow within the vessel. In accordance with this invention, the metal ingot is subjected to two distinct heating steps. A first heating step preferably using an electron beam gun, melts the ingot and the molten material flows onto a refractory surface where it is subjected to a second heating step, preferably also using an electron beam gun. The plural heating approach of this invention has been found to produce significant increases in metal vaporization rate, thus permitting a higher rate of formation of metallic carbide to be provided on the substrate.

Apparatus and method for producing carbide coatings

A method of producing monolithic metal blanks by freezing-on techniques resides in that the surface of a liquid metal melt is heated with the formation of a variable temperature field, defined by the temperature gradient between heating zones and cooling zones. The lines of equal temperatures constitute isotherms. The heating zones are disposed so that the isotherms having a temperature close to the crystallization temperature T.sub.c repeat the shape of the cross-section of the blank to be produced. A dummy bar is immersed equidistantly to the isotherm with the temperature of crystallization T.sub.c. Subsequent drawing out of the dummy bar from the melt with a linear speed defined by the rate of crystallization results in the formation of the blank.

Method of producing monolithic metal blanks by freezing-on techniques

An electron gun comprises a linear thermionic cathode having part of its emitting surface facing an accelerating anode, and the rest of the emitting surface separated by a gap from a cathode-adjacent focusing electrode. The cathode-adjacent focusing electrode is made of two portions spaced apart. On the opposite end surfaces of these portions, there is attached a pair of flat current-conducting springs whose other ends are connected to leads. The other end surfaces of these portions accommodate cathode holders and have a pair of flat springs attached thereto, the other ends of the pair of flat springs being connected to the insulator of the electron gun housing. The pairs of flat springs attached to different portions of the focusing electrode deflect towards each other. The proposed electron gun increases the stability of its electron-optical parameters.

A method of producing a multilayer ingot in an electron-beam installation, with the billet arranged in a base plate above the bottom thereof, and the base plate is reciprocated in a horizontal direction as said billet is being melted and the first layer of said ingot is being shaped. Another metal billet is melted above an intermediate vessel, with the molten metal being poured thereoff onto said first layer of the ingot in the base plate forming thereby a second layer on the first formed layer and additional layers of a multilayer ingot are shaped in a similar manner. The reciprocation speed of the base plate is inversely proportional to the cooling rate of the ingot metal in a longitudinal direction. The method of the invention ensures producing ingots with a smooth surface which does not require and preprocessing prior to rolling.

Method of producing a multilayer metal ingot by the electro-beam

A device for electron-beam heating of materials comprises an electron gun and an electromagnetic electron beam control system with a rectangular magnetic circuit. The opposite rods of the magnetic circuit accommodate beam deflection windings as well as beam correction and spreading windings. An additional winding is also provided on each magnetic circuit rod. The magnetic fields created by the current flowing through said additional windings form a magnetic quadrupole lens. The device permits manipulating the electron beam so as to obtain a sufficiently long and narrow focal spot on the surface being heated, and also the beam deflection angles range from 0.degree. to 45.degree..
