The present invention is directed to a wax formulation for use in lignocellulosic products, which impart improved properties such as dimensional stability when the products are exposed to moisture. The wax formulations include a wax and a surface tension/interfacial tension reducing agent comprising one or more of a fluorinated compound having two to six carbon atoms, an alkylphenol alkoxylate or an ethoxylated acetylenic diol.

Emulsions are provided which are useful in imparting water-resistance to gypsum wood fiber products. In one embodiment, the emulsions comprise a wax or a combination of waxes, an alkyl phenol, at least one surfactant, Polynaphthalenesulfonic acid, and an alkali metal hydroxide. In another embodiment, the emulsions comprise a wax or a combination of waxes, an alkyl phenol, at least one surfactant, polynaphthalenesulfonic acid, an alkali metal hydroxide, and a complexed starch.

Water-resistant additives for gypsum wood fiber products

Emulsions are provided which are useful in imparting water-resistance to lignocellulosic products. In one embodiment, the emulsions contain a nonsaponifiable wax, a saponified wax, an alkyl phenol component, a dispersant/surfactant such as a salt of polynaphthalenesulfonic acid, and a carboxymethylcellulose. Such emulsions may be added to hot, even boiling, water without the emulsion separating of curdling. Various embodiments are stable for extended periods of time when stored at room temperature, do not require the addition of a preservative biocide to avoid contributing to biodegradation in a lignocellulosic product. The emulsions are pourable liquids at room temperature. Optionally, the emulsions may be added to lignocellulosic products with a preservative to inhibit the preservative from leaching out.

Emulsions for lignocellulosic products, methods of their manufacture, improved lignocellulosic products and methods for their manufacture

A method is provided which uses an improved emulsion to imparting water-resistance to gypsum products. In one embodiment, gypsum products comprise calcium sulfate dihydrate and an emulsion which comprises a saponified wax, a nonsaponifiable wax, an alkyl phenol, a surfactant/dispersant salt of polynaphthalenesulfonic acid, and carboxymethylcellulose. Optionally, the emulsions may contain a preservative, e.g., a biocide (mildewcide, fungicide, etc.). These gypsum products resist the uptake of water and therefore resist biological infestation without addition of a preservative.

Emulsions for composite materials

Emulsions are provided which are useful in imparting water resistance to gypsum products. In one embodiment, the emulsions comprise a plurality of waxes, at least one saponified wax, a complexed starch, a polymerized alkyl phenol, and a small amount of a co-surfactant. In another embodiment, the emulsions comprise a single wax, a balanced dual surfactant system, a complexed starch and a polymerized alkyl phenol. Emulsions of this embodiment may be added to hot, even boiling, water without the emulsion separating or curdling. The emulsions of the present invention are stable for extended periods of time when stored at room temperature and do not require the addition of a bactericide. The emulsions of the present invention are pourable liquids at room temperature.
