A system and method of identifying licensed and unlicensed communications over a cellular protocol includes: wirelessly transmitting a communication session request from a wireless device to a wireless carrier system using the LTE cellular protocol; receiving a response at the wireless device from the wireless carrier system indicating that the wireless carrier system is providing a communication session using a licensed communications frequency band or an unlicensed communications frequency band; and establishing communications from the wireless device via the wireless carrier system based on whether the wireless carrier system is providing cellular communications via the licensed communications frequency band or the unlicensed communications frequency band.

Managing licensed and unlicensed communications using cellular protocols

A wireless network receives a registration from a wireless device. The network identifies an Extensible Mark-up Language Configuration Access Protocol (XCAP) service and establishes an XCAP bearer for the wireless device. The network receives an enabling instruction over the XCAP bearer to enable the mobile data service and establishes a mobile data bearer for the wireless device. The network exchanges user data with the wireless device over the mobile data bearer. The network automatically establishes the mobile data bearer for the wireless device responsive to subsequent registrations when the mobile data service is enabled. The network receives a disabling instruction over the XCAP bearer to disable the mobile data service for the wireless device. The network terminates the mobile data bearer for the wireless device and does not automatically establish the mobile data bearer for the wireless device responsive to subsequent registrations when the mobile data service is disabled.

Mobile data service control for a wireless communication device

In a wireless communication system wherein a user equipment (UE) that accesses a cell served by an access point (sometimes known as femtocell) is granted only a limited time period during which to camp on, attach to, or connect to the cell, the communication system permits a user of the UE to anticipate an expiration of the time period and, if desired negotiate an extension of the time period. More particularly, the communication system provides for notification of the UE of the duration of this limited time period and further permits the UE to negotiate an extension of the time period when the UE desires to do so. In the event an extension is requested by the user and granted by the owner/operator, a notification will be sent to the user and the UE may reset a timer.

Method and apparatus for negotiation and notification of a network access time period in a wireless communication system

In a wireless communication system, a wireless communication device transfers a SIP INVITE message having a first header with a first value indicating a location-handling requirement. The SIP INVITE message also has a second header with a location value. A communication signaling processing system processes the SIP INVITE message to determine a second value responsive to the first value indicating the location-handling requirement. The processing system replaces the location value in the second header of the SIP INVITE message with the second value. The processing system transfers the SIP INVITE message with the second value in the second header.

Location information control for session initiation protocol messages

A communication system and method of using the communication system to determine whether to maintain a connection between a wireless carrier system and a telematics unit in a vehicle. The method includes the steps of: providing a connection request between the vehicle and the wireless carrier system (WCS), wherein the connection request includes a first connectivity identifier; receiving a connection response from the WCS indicating a vehicle-WCS connection, wherein the connection response includes a second connectivity identifier; based on receiving the connection response, determining at the telematics unit whether to maintain the vehicle-WCS connection using the first and second connectivity identifiers; and when the telematics unit determines to not maintain the vehicle-WCS connection, then carrying out one or more actions to terminate the vehicle-WCS connection.

Vehicle connectivity using a desired access point name

A Long Term Evolution (LTE) network receives a registration request from User Equipment (UE) and responsively identifies a mobile data Access Point Name (APN) and an Internet Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) APN for the UE. The LTE network establishes a mobile data bearer and an IMS bearer responsive to APNs. The LTE network receives a user instruction to disable the mobile data service for the UE and responsively releases the mobile data bearer and disables the mobile data APN for the UE. An IMS server system exchanges messages with the UE over the IMS bearer when the mobile data service is disabled. The LTE network receives a user instruction to enable the mobile data service for the UE and responsively enables the mobile data APN for the UE.

Systems, methods, and software for handling traffic congestion messages in wireless communication systems are provided herein. In one example, method of operating a wireless communication system is provided. The method includes monitoring a traffic congestion message transferred by a radio access network of the wireless communication system for delivery to a congestion mitigation node responsive to user traffic congestion for a wireless communication device in the radio access network. The method includes identifying a destination network for the traffic congestion message. When the destination network indicates a congestion mitigation node not in the wireless communication system, the method includes withholding delivery of the traffic congestion message. When the destination network indicates a congestion mitigation node in the wireless communication system, the method includes allowing delivery of the traffic congestion message to the congestion mitigation node in the wireless communication system.

Handling of traffic congestion messages for wireless communication devices in wireless communication systems

A communication system and methods of using the communication system to re-activate a previously used access point name (APN) in order to re-establish connectivity between an application service provider (ASP) and a telematics unit in a vehicle. The steps of the method include: receiving content data at the vehicle via the ASP using a first access point name (APN); experiencing a loss of connectivity between the vehicle and the ASP, wherein the loss of connectivity includes de-activation of the first APN with the ASP; transmitting from the vehicle via a second APN a re-activation request associated with the first APN; and in response to the re-activation request, receiving a notification at the vehicle that the first APN has been re-activated.

Re-activating a first access point name using a second access point name

A vehicle telematics system and a method for controlling access to a plurality of wireless communication channels between the telematics system and on-board vehicle systems and mobile communications devices is provided. The telematics system includes one network interface connected to a telecommunications network and another network interface connected to one or more on-board vehicle systems and mobile communications devices to permit the on-board vehicle systems and communications devices to access the telecommunications network. The telematics system further includes a controller that receives a request by an on-board vehicle system to establish a communication channel, determines whether all of the channels are in active use, and, if so, identifies a low priority application of one of the on-board vehicle systems or communications devices using one of the active channels and then severs the channel and establishes the communication channel between the telematics system and requesting vehicle system.

Control of wireless communication channels for a vehicle telematics unit

A method and system for selectively re-initiating bearer connections upon communication failure. In a scenario where a gateway provides connectivity with an application server for numerous user equipment devices (UEs), when gateway communication with the application server fails, a determination may be made as to which UEs recently missed communication from the application server, and those determined UEs may be paged to re-initiate their bearer connections and to re-establish gateway registration with an appropriate application server.

Selective bearer re-initiation upon communication failure

A method and system to facilitate handoff of user equipment (UE) back to the same wireless network that was earlier serving the UE. When the UE is being served by a first wireless network and is going to be handed off to a second wireless network, the second wireless network may receive and store an identifier of the first wireless network. In turn, when the UE is going to hand off from the second wireless network (e.g., due to low signal strength or preference for another air interface protocol), the second wireless network may then transmit the identifier of the first wireless network to the UE, to cause the UE hand off back to the first wireless network rather than to some other network.

Method and system for facilitating handoff of a UE to an earlier serving wireless network

Systems, methods, and software for correlating media types of emergency communication requests in wireless communication networks are provided herein. In one example, a method of operating a wireless communication system which routes communications between user devices and emergency service providers is provided. The method includes monitoring communication requests for emergency communication sessions between the user devices and service nodes of the emergency service providers to determine which media types of the communication requests are supported by the service nodes receiving the communication requests, identifying geographic locations of the user devices for the communication requests, identifying the service nodes receiving the communication requests, and creating a data structure correlating the geographic locations of the user devices and identifiers of the service nodes to the media types supported by the service nodes.

Correlating media types of emergency communication requests

A communication system is provided that implements an inter-technology SRVCC handoff without the need for an SRVCC indicator. A user equipment (UE) establishes a communication session that comprises a voice component in a packet data network. In response to determining to handoff the session to a target network, the communication system determines that the session comprises a voice component based on a call-type identifier, preferably a QoS Class Identifier (QCI), that is associated with a voice call and further determines that a target network is a circuit switched network based on configuration information maintained in association with the target network. In response to determining that the session comprises a voice component, that the target network is a circuit switched network, and, based on a profile of the UE, that the UE is capable of operation in single radio mode, the communication system determines to implement a SRVCC handoff procedure.

Method and apparatus for inter-technology handoff of a user equipment

In order to facilitate a handoff of a communication session between a legacy circuit switched network and a packet data network such as a 3GPP LTE, 3GPP2 UMB, or WiMAX network, which communication session is anchored in an IMS Voice Call Continuity Application Server (VCC AS), a Circuit Switched Proxy (CS Proxy) is provided in the packet data network that communicates with a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) of the circuit switched network. The CS Proxy allows the packet data network to communicate with the VCC AS, the MSC to communicate with the packet data network, and the MSC to communicate with the VCC AS via the packet data network, thereby allowing an exchange of handoff-related information between the packet data network and the VCC AS, the packet data network and the circuit switched network, and the circuit switched network and the VCC AS via the packet data network.
