The present invention relates to methods and nutritional compositions for the prevention and treatment of cachexia and anorexia. The methods of the invention comprise administering a composition comprising effective amounts of &#x3c9;-3 fatty acids such as alpha-linolenic acid, stearidonic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, docosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid or mixtures thereof; of branched-chain amino acids valine, leucine, isoleucine or mixtures thereof; with or without reduced levels of tryptophan and 5-hydroxytryptophan; and of antioxidant system selected from the group comprising beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, or mixtures thereof.

Composition for the prevention and treatment of cachexia

The present invention relates to methods and nutritional compositions for the prevention and treatment of cachexia and anorexia. The methods of the invention comprise administering a composition comprising effective amounts of &ohgr;-3 fatty acids such as alpha-linolenic acid, stearidonic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, docosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid or mixtures thereof; of branched-chain amino acids valine, leucine, isoleucine or mixtures thereof; with or without reduced levels of tryptophan and 5-hydroxytryptophan; and of antioxidant system selected from the group comprising beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, or mixtures thereof.

Method for the prevention and treatment of cachexia and anorexia

The present invention relates to methods and nutritional compositions for the prevention and treatment of cachexia and anorexia. The methods of the invention comprise administering a composition comprising effective amounts of &ohgr;-3 fatty acids such as alpha-linolenic acid, stearidonic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, docosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid or mixtures thereof, of branched-chain amino acids valine, leucine, isoleucine or mixtures thereof; with or without reduced levels of tryptophan and 5-hydroxytryptophan; and of antioxidant system selected from the group comprising beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, or mixtures thereof.

The methods of the invention comprise administering a composition comprising effective amounts of .omega.-3 fatty acids such as alpha-linolenic acid, stearidonic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, docosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid or mixtures thereof; of branched-chain amino acids valine, leucine, isoleucine or mixtures thereof; with or without reduced levels of tryptophan and 5-hydroxytryptophan; and of antioxidant system selected from the group comprising beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, or mixtures thereof.

A liquid enteral nutritional product has been formulated which has utility, for example, for persons with cancer who are not currently undergoing radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. The nutritional product is characterized by a fatty acid profile wherein, by weight: (a) the ratio of the sum of the n-3 to n-6 fatty acids is in the range of 1.37 to 1.70; (b) Eicosapentaenoic Acid (23:6n-3) is about 2.7-3.0% of total fatty acids.; and (c) Docosahexaenoic Acid (22:6n-3) is about 1.3-1.4% of total fatty acids. Preferably the nutritional product also contains intact protein, .beta.-carotene, carnitine and taurine.

Enteral nutritional product

An enteral nutritional product has been formulated for persons who are currently undergoing radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. The nutritional product has a protein system which includes a soy protein hydrolysate. The nutritional product is very low in folic acid, contains .beta.-carotene, and has a ratio of n-6 to n-3 fatty acids that is in the range of about 1.3:1 to 2.5:1.

Enteral nutritional product for patients undergoing radiation therapy

A method of providing enteral nutritional support to a person who is currently undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy involves including in the person's diet an enteral nutritional product having a protein system which includes a soy protein hydrolysate. The nutritional product is very low in folic acid, contains .beta.-carotene, and has a ratio of n-6 to n-3 fatty acids that is in the range of about 1.3:1 to 2.5:1.

Method of providing enteral nutritional support for patients undergoing

Enteral nutritional support for a person infected with human immunodeficiency virus is provided by including in the diet a nutritional product which contains a soy protein hydrolysate having a degree of hydrolysis in the range of about 14 to 17 and a molecular weight partition, as determined by size exclusion chromatography, wherein 30-60% of the particles have a molecular weight in the range of 1500-5000 Daltons. The nutritional product also contains a source of intact protein. The nutritional product has a ratio, by weight, of n-6 to n-3 fatty acids of about 1.3:1 to 2.5:1. The nutritional product also contains a source of dietary fiber.
