Systems and methods for overlaying a second image/video data onto a first image/video data are described herein. The first image/video data may be intended to be rendered on a display with certain characteristics&#x2014;e.g., HDR, EDR, VDR or UHD capabilities. The second image/video data may comprise graphics, closed captioning, text, advertisement&#x2014;or any data that may be desired to be overlaid and/or composited onto the first image/video data. The second image/video data may be appearance mapped according to the image statistics and/or characteristics of the first image/video data. In addition, such appearance mapping may be made according to the characteristics of the display that the composite data is to be rendered. Such appearance mapping is desired to render a composite data that is visually pleasing to a viewer, rendered upon a desired display.

Systems and methods for appearance mapping for compositing overlay graphics

An electronic device may have a main display and an ancillary display. The device may also have a backlit keyboard with glyphs. An ambient light sensor may measure ambient light levels. Control circuitry in the laptop computer may adjust the color cast of content on the ancillary display depending on whether the content contains glyphs or other input display content or whether the content contains images, color gradients, or other output display content. Input display content may be matched in color cast to the color cast of the glyphs, which may be determined based on backlight status and/or measured ambient light information. Output content may be color matched to the main display.

Electronic device having ancillary display with color control

A display may store extended display identification data for communicating the capabilities of the display to a source device such as a graphics processing unit. The extended display identification data may include a red primary color value, a green primary color value, and a blue primary color value. The primary color values in the extended display identification data may be determined during manufacturing. For example, a light sensor may measure the native primary colors of the display, and calibration computing equipment may determine if the native primary colors of the display are within a target color gamut. If the native primary colors of the display are outside of the target color gamut by an amount larger than a threshold, the primary color values in the extended display identification data may be adjusted to account for the color variation.

Displays with unit-specific display identification data

An encoder receives an input enhanced dynamic range (EDR) image and a corresponding lower dynamic range (LDR) image to be coded at a given target rate. Before coding, a pre-dithering process is applied to the input LDR image to generate a dithered LDR image at a second bit depth, lower than its original bit depth. The pre-dithering process includes: generating uniformly-distributed noise, applying a spatial filter to the noise to generate low-pass or high-pass filtered noise, applying a temporal high pass or low pass filter to the spatially-filtered noise to generate output noise, adding the output noise to the input LDR image to generate a noise-enhanced LDR image, and quantizing the noise-enhanced image to generate the dithered LDR image. Selecting the characteristics of the dithering filters is based on both the target bit rate and luminance characteristics of the pixels in the input LDR image.

Pre-dithering in high dynamic range video coding

There are provided a method and system for color correcting displays with different color gamuts. The method includes performing color correction on source picture content, using at least one of a non-reference type display having a non-reference color gamut and a reference type display having a reference color gamut. The performing step includes mastering the source picture content to provide mastered color corrected picture content for display on the reference type displays having a reference color gamut. The performing step further includes generating metadata for a subsequent inverse color gamut mapping that color transforms the mastered color corrected picture content for display on non-reference type displays having a non-reference color gamut. The subsequent inverse color gamut mapping is an inverse operation of a color gamut mapping applied during the color correction to obtain the mastered color corrected picture content for display on the reference type displays having the reference color gamut. The source picture content is mastered only for the reference type displays having the reference color gamut.

Methods and systems for displays with chromatic correction with differing chromatic ranges

Dithering techniques for images are described herein. An input image of a first bit depth is separated into a luma and one or more chroma components. A model of the optical transfer function (OTF) of the human visual system (HVS) is used to generate dither noise which is added to the chroma components of the input image. The model of the OTF is adapted in response to viewing distances determined based on the spatial resolution of the chroma components. An image based on the original input luma component and the noise-modified chroma components is quantized to a second bit depth, which is lower than the first bit depth, to generate an output dithered image.

Dithering for chromatically subsampled image formats

A method, apparatus and system for providing color grading or color correction for displays includes a plurality of virtual device models where each virtual device model has a virtual model specification (VMS) which controls a display feature. Each display includes a display specification including a display requirement or requirements. An apparatus of the present invention is configured to compare the display feature of at least one VMS against the display requirement of the display specification to determine a best match therebetween to select a virtual device model to control a display picture. Color correction is further provided in post production using the VMS to provide consistency across multiple display types.

Method, apparatus and system for providing color grading for displays

Novel methods and systems for inverse tone mapping are disclosed. A scene can be analyzed to obtain highlight detection from bright light sources and specular reflections. An inverse tone mapping curve can be calculated based on the lower dynamic range and higher dynamic range displays. Multi-scale filtering can be applied to reduce noise or artifacts.

Methods and systems for inverse tone mapping

There are provided methods and systems for color correcting displays with different color gamuts. A method includes performing an initial color correction on source picture content using a reference type display having a reference color gamut to obtain mastered color corrected picture content for display on reference type displays having the reference color gamut. The method further includes determining a first set of metadata defining a color gamut mapping specification for a color gamut mapping from a non-reference type display having a non-reference color gamut to the reference type display. The method also includes performing a subsequent color correction using the non-reference type display and the mastered color corrected picture content to create a second set of metadata directed to non-reference type displays having the non-reference color gamut. The method additionally includes generating a final set of metadata from the first set of metadata and the second set of metadata, for a subsequent color transform that color transforms the mastered color corrected picture content for display on non-reference type displays for consumer consumption. The source picture content is mastered for consumer consumption only for the reference type displays having the reference color gamut.

Methods and systems for displays with chromatic correction having differing chromatic ranges

There are provided methods and systems for color correcting displays with different color gamuts. A method includes performing color correction on source picture content, using at least one of a non-reference type display having a non-reference color gamut and a reference type display having a reference color gamut. The performing step includes mastering the source picture content to provide mastered color corrected picture content for display on the non-reference type displays having a non-reference color gamut. The performing step further includes generating metadata for a color gamut mapping that color transforms the mastered color corrected picture content for display on reference type displays having a reference color gamut. The source picture content is mastered only for the non-reference type displays having the non-reference color gamut.

A method and system for gamma adjustment for average power level dependency displays includes applying gamma controlled functions over a range of values at a plurality of average power levels (APLs) for a display. The gamma controlled functions include coefficients for reconstruction of the gamma controlled functions. Upon a change to an APL, interpolation is performed between the coefficients to predict a new gamma controlled function for the new APL.

Method and system for prediction of gamma characteristics for a display

According to this method, successive iterations are launched according to the following steps:&#x2014;1) the reproduction color device is set according to settings,&#x2014;2) reference input colors are calibrated putting calibrated input colors,&#x2014;4) reproduction quality rating value are calculated,&#x2014;5) a reproduction quality criterion is applied to decide or not to go for another iteration with different settings. A system and method for compensating for average brightness dependency (ABD) differences between displays with and without average brightness dependency (ABD) includes color correcting source picture content on a reference display to output color corrected picture content. In addition, an ABD simulation process uses the color corrected picture content to simulate the display of content on the reference display. Subsequently, a compensation process receives the color corrected picture content and information from the simulation process and applies an ABD compensation characteristic to the color corrected picture content for correctly displaying the source picture content on a display with different ABD characteristics than the reference display.
