A base station provides, a first number of probe packets to an access point for transmission to a user equipment over an access network path. The base station receives information indicating a bandwidth of the access network path estimated by the user equipment. The base station determines which of the base station or the access point to use for communication with the user equipment based on the bandwidth. The user equipment receives a second number of packets over an air interface and determines inter-arrival packet delays for the second number of probe packets. The user equipment estimates the bandwidth of the air interface based on the inter-arrival packet delays, the first number, and a time interval for transmission of the first number of probe packets. The user equipment transmits information indicating the bandwidth.

Estimating bandwidth in a heterogeneous wireless communication system

One or more processors in a communication system allocate a selected connectivity path from a plurality of connectivity paths supported by a plurality of access technologies. The selected connectivity path is allocated to a service flow between a communication device and a core network. One or more available access channels are assigned to the service flow for the selected connectivity path. Network conditions and performance of the service flow are monitored on the one or more available access channels. The selected connectivity path is modified based on the network conditions and the performance of the service flow seamlessly to the existing applications or service flows. In some cases, criteria for modifying the selected connectivity path are modified for a predetermined time interval in response to modifying the selected connectivity path, e.g., by modifying threshold values that are used to determine whether to modify the selected connectivity path based on a comparison of the threshold values to the network conditions or the performance of the service flow.

Intelligent traffic steering over optimal paths using multiple access technologies

In one example embodiment, a network node includes a processor configured to receive one or more data packets from a transmitter and transmit at least one first-type confirmation message to the transmitter based on a threshold, the at least one first-type confirmation message including an acknowledgement that all but at least two bytes of data included in the one or more data packets are received from the transmitter. The processor is further configured to transmit at least one second-type confirmation message to the transmitter based on at least one of a size of a buffer at the network node available for receiving data packets and an acknowledgement from an end device acknowledging receipt of the one or more data packets, the at least one second message including an acknowledgement of one or more of the at least two bytes of data.
