At least one example is a method including: supplying a first bus voltage to a first device by way of a DC-DC converter coupled to a link voltage; supplying a second bus voltage to a second device by way of a second DC-DC converter coupled to the link voltage; converting an AC voltage to the link voltage by way of an AC-DC converter; selecting, by a shunt regulator, a setpoint for the link voltage based on the first bus voltage and the second bus voltage; and regulating the link voltage to the setpoint by the AC-DC converter.

Power adapters with multiple charging ports

A controller is for use in a power converter having a flyback transformer having a primary winding switched by a primary side transistor and a secondary winding switched by a secondary side transistor. The controller includes a line voltage detection circuit that activates a high line detect signal in response to detecting that an input line voltage is greater than a first threshold, a discontinuous conduction mode detection circuit activates a discontinuous conduction mode signal in response to detecting that the controller is operating in discontinuous conduction mode, and a switching controller coupled to the line voltage detection circuit and to the discontinuous conduction mode detection circuit that controls the primary side transistor and the secondary side transistor using partial zero voltage switching in response to an activation of the high line detect signal and the discontinuous conduction mode signal, and without using partial zero voltage switching otherwise.

Partial zero voltage switching (ZVS) for flyback power converter and method therefor

A buck converter includes a power switch having a first end to receive an input voltage, a synchronous switch connected between a second end of the power switch and the ground, an inductor having a first end connected to the other end of the power switch, and a switch control circuit configured to turn off the synchronous switch when a zero voltage delay time passes after an inductor current flowing through the inductor reaches a predetermined reference value, calculate a dead time based on the input voltage and the zero voltage delay time, and turn on the power switch when the dead time passes following the turn-off time of the synchronous switch.

Example embodiments are methods including: driving a primary current with a first polarity in a primary winding of a transformer, and a secondary winding of the transformer arranged for flyback operation; creating, by the primary current, a charge voltage on an auxiliary winding of the transformer; charging, by the charge voltage, a capacitance coupled to the auxiliary winding; ceasing the driving of the primary current and discharging an energy in a field associated with the secondary winding to provide an output voltage of the power converter; inducing a primary current with a second polarity in the primary winding by coupling the capacitance to the auxiliary winding; and reducing voltage across a main switch coupled to the primary winding, the reducing by the primary current with the second polarity.

Reduced voltage switching of a main switch in flyback power converters. At least some example embodiments are methods including: storing energy in a field associated with a secondary winding of a transformer, the secondary winding arranged for flyback operation within a secondary circuit of the power converter; charging a capacitor coupled to an auxiliary winding of the transformer; discharging the energy in the field associated with the secondary winding to provide an output voltage of the power converter; and when the electrical current flowing through the secondary winding reaches a predetermined low level reducing voltage across a main switch in a primary circuit of the power converter by coupling the capacitor to the auxiliary winding to create a voltage on a primary winding of the transformer.

A buck converter includes a power switch having a first end to receive an input voltage, and a soft start circuit configured to compensate a soft start voltage during a soft start time period according to a result of comparing a feedback voltage corresponding to an output voltage of the buck converter and an input detection voltage corresponding to the input voltage. The buck converter controls switching of the power switch using the soft start voltage.

Soft-start circuit and buck converter comprising the same

A power supply includes a transistor that is connected to a primary winding of a transformer. A controller controls a switching operation of the transistor by quasi-resonant switching. The controller receives a feedback voltage and adjusts the feedback voltage to adjust a blanking frequency, which is an inverse of a blanking time during which the transistor is prevented from being turned on. The controller turns on the transistor after expiration of the blanking time based on a level of a resonant ring.

Variable blanking frequency for resonant converters

A power supply includes a controller integrated circuit that controls a switching operation of a primary switch based on a feedback voltage indicative of an output voltage of the power supply. The controller integrated circuit starts the switching of the primary switch when the feedback voltage reaches a first threshold voltage and stops the switching of the primary switch when the feedback voltage reaches a second threshold voltage. The controller integrated circuit adjusts the feedback voltage relative to the first threshold voltage to reduce the delay time to start switching the primary switch to increase the output voltage in response to changing load conditions.

DC-DC converter with dynamic feedback loop

A buck converter includes a power switch having one end to which an input voltage is transferred, a synchronous switch connected between the other end of the power switch and the ground, an inductor having an end connected to the other end of the power switch, and a switch control circuit configured to calculate a zero voltage delay time based on at least an ON time of the power switch and a delay time. The delay time is determined based on the inductor and parasitic capacitors of the power switch and the synchronous switch.

Embodiments of devices, systems, and methods for controlling the output voltages and currents of a power converter as requested by an adaptive device are described. In one embodiment, a power converter includes a primary controller, a secondary controller, and an opto-coupler configured to communicate a communication request, including a load request, by a secondary controller to a primary controller in a feedback signal. A method may include the operations of: executing a request cycle, by extending an 'ON' state for a secondary switch, detecting a slope change in a scaled primary voltage signal, entering a communication-ready mode, converting a load request into communication information communicated in a feedback signal using an opto-coupler, decoding the communication information, and adjusting at least one of a reference voltage for output current and a reference voltage.

Providing adaptive output power

Various embodiments of apparatuses, systems, and methods for controlling the operating status of a power converter during, a standby mode, a powered mode, and a transition from the standby mode to the powered mode is described. For at least one embodiment, a power converter includes a primary controller and a secondary controller wherein the primary controller includes a first circuit configured to initiate a transition from standby mode to powered mode upon receipt of a wake-up signal and wherein the first circuit is powered during standby mode. For at least one embodiment, the first circuit is powered during a transition from a standby mode to a powered mode by voltages induced in a third coil of a transformer by a device battery powering a second coil of the transformer. For one embodiment, an Icontroller is utilized to control output currents during transitions from standby to powered mode.

A circuit includes a drain detect circuit. The drain detect circuit receives a sense signal from a secondary side of a power converter circuit, determines, using voltage values of the sense signal, whether a primary side switch of the power converter circuit has been turned on, and assert a switch on detect signal in response to determining that the primary side switch has been turned on. The circuit may assert an enable signal in response to the assertion of the switch on detect signal, and de-asserts the enable signal in response to an assertion of a control signal. The control signal may only allowed to be asserted when the enable signal is asserted. The control signal may control a Synchronous Rectifier device. The power converter circuit may be a flyback converter, and the primary side switch may control a current into a primary-side coil of a transformer.
