An apparatus and method for detecting a tilted disc, and an apparatus and method for reproducing data from the tilted disc are provided. The method for detecting a tilted disc comprises: radiating light on a predetermined location at the inner circumference of an optical disc and moving a pickup away from the optical disc; measuring a time Tat which a focus error signal, generated when light is reflected from a recording layer of the optical disc, is output; radiating light on a predetermined location at the outer circumference of the optical disc and moving the pickup unit away from the optical disc; measuring a time Twhen a focus error signal, generated when light is reflected from the recording layer of the optical disc, is output; determining a tilt degree indicating value T which is a value for determining whether the optical disc is a tilted disc, using the measured times Tand T; and comparing the tilt degree indicating value T with a predetermined reference value R and determining whether the optical disc is a tilted disc.

Apparatus method for detecting tilt at inner and outer circumference and determining tilt degree based on times when focus error signals are detected

A method and an apparatus for identifying the type of an optical recording medium are provided. The method includes detecting a surface reflected signal Sand a writable-surface reflected signal Sof an optical recording medium while performing a focus search using a first optical system, counting a time difference DTbetween a high peak and a low peak of the surface reflected signal S, counting a time difference DTbetween the high peak of the surface reflected signal and a high peak of the writable-surface reflected signal S, obtaining DT by substituting DTand DTinto the following equation: and comparing DT with a reference time T, and driving the first optical system if DT is greater than T and driving a second optical system if DT is not greater than T.

Method and apparatus for identifying the type of optical recording medium

A method detects a disc using signals generated from a light irregularly reflected from pits formed on a recording surface of the disc. The method detects a ratio of a peak-to-peak value of a first signal generated from the irregular reflection to a peak-to-peak value of a second signal generated from the irregular reflection. The method further detects the disc according to magnitudes of the first and second signals and the detected ratio.

Method of detecting a type of disc using a reference ratio and detected ratio

A disc discrimination method and apparatus include calculating a first time difference between a time when a first focusing signal is detected from a first recording area of a first disc and a time when a first reflection signal is detected from a first surface area of the first disc, and calculating a second time difference between a time when a second focusing signal is detected from a second recording area of a second disc and a time when a second reflection signal is detected from a second surface area of the second disc. An average value of the first and the second time differences is calculated and the average value obtained as a reference time is determined and a disc type of the first disc or the second disc loaded into the optical disc system is identified using the average value.
