A method of making a polybenzimidazole (PBI) includes the steps of: reacting, in a solution, an organic compound having at least 2 amino groups with an organic aldehyde adduct, the reactants comprise at least 8% by weight of the solution. A solvent of the solution may be selected from the group of: N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), tetramethylene sulfone, and combinations thereof. The organic aldehyde adduct may be an organic aldehyde bisulfite adduct. The organic aldehyde portion of the organic aldehyde adduct being aliphatic, alicyclic, aromatic, heterocyclic, or heteroaromatic aldehyde or mixtures thereof. The polybenzimidazole may have an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.40 dl/g.

Method of making polybenzimidazole

A polybenzimidazole solution comprises a polybenzimidazole dissolved in an ionic liquid excluding 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydroxide, and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate.

Polybenzimidazole solution in an ionic liquid

A process for producing a solution blend of a polybenzimidazole (PBI) and a polyetherketoneketone (PEKK). The PBI is mixed with sulfuric acid at a temperature between 40&#xb0; C. and 80&#xb0; C. for 30 minutes to 2 hours to produce a PBI solution then cooled to room temperature to form a cooled PBI solution. Then PEKK is added to the cooled PBI solution to form a mixture and that mixture is stirred from 30 minutes to 2 hours at room temperature to form a stirred mixture. The stirred mixture is poured into an excess of water being stirred swiftly to form an aqueous mixture. The aqueous mixture is filtered to produce a blend. The blend is washed with water and dried. The resulting blend can yield a blend in all proportion from 1/99 PBI/PEKK to 99/1 PBI/PEKK.

Polybenzimidazole-polyetherketoneketone blends and miscible blends

A polybenzimidazole solution comprises a polybenzimidazole dissolved in an ionic liquid excluding 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydroxide, and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate. The ionic liquid may be a salt having a melting point less than or equal to 100&#xb0; C. The salt having a cation (+) and an anion (&#x2212;). The cation may be selected from the group consisting of: choline, ammoniums, phosphoniums, pyridiniums, pyrrolidiniums, morpholimiums, pyrazoliums, sulfoniums, imidazoliums. The anion may be selected from the group consisting of: halides, bis(triflyl)amide, CFSO, hydroxides, nitrates, sulfates, acetates, cyanates, aluminates, borates, phosphates, phosphorates, alkylsulfates, tosylates.

The invention under consideration concerns novel his-molecular-weight polyazoles, which are suitable for the production of fibers, films, membranes, and molded articles, on the basis of their high molecular weight, expressed as intrinsic viscosity, of at least 1.3 dl/g. Moreover, the invention under consideration describes a method for the production of high-molecular-weight polyazoles.

High-molecular-weight polyazoles used as proton conducting membranes

A single-stage melt polymerization process is demonstrated for production of a polybenzimidazole which comprises the following steps. First, a high intensity reactor having a means for controlling agitation and rate of, atmosphere, and temperature is provided. Second, the high intensity reactor is degassed and filled with nitrogen. Third, a tetraminobiphenyl (TAB), compound A and an isophthalic acid (IPA), compound B are provided. Fourth, the high intensity reactor is charged with compounds A and B. Fifth, compound A and compound B are reacted under high intensity agitation in an absence of catalyst, to temperature of between 340&#xb0; C. to 430&#xb0; C. to produce a polybenzimidazole having an IV of at least 0.45 and a plugging value of greater than or equal to 1.0 g/cm.

Process for the production of polybenzimidazole from a tetraminobiphenyl and an isophthalic acid

The invention under consideration concerns novel high-molecular-weight polyazoles, which are suitable for the production of fibers, films, membranes, and molded articles, on the basis of their high molecular weight, expressed as intrinsic viscosity, of at least 1.3 dl/g. Moreover, the invention under consideration describes a method for the production of high-molecular-weight polyazoles.

High-molecular-weight polyazoles

A polymer blend comprises PBI, PAEK, and PEI. A method of making the foregoing blend comprises the steps of intimately blending PBI, PAEK, and PEI by dissolving PBI, PAEK, and PEI in a strong acid or melt blending PBI, PAEK, and PEI.

A process is presented for the production of high molecular weight polybenzimidazole, in two steps. Step one: provide a first reaction vessel and charge it with at least one aromatic hydrocarbon tetraamine, and a heterocyclic ring making up the dicarboxylic component. Heat the reactants under agitation. Terminate the agitation while continuing to heat the reaction mixture to about 230&#xb0; C. while allowing the reaction mass to foam. Cool the reaction mass to a friable foamed mass. Crush the friable foamed mass to obtain a ground prepolymer. Step two; provide a second reaction vessel, transferring the ground prepolymer to it. A pressure wash of the first reaction vessel and the means for agitation to obtain a second ground prepolymer. Transfer the second ground prepolymer to the second reaction vessel. Heat the ground prepolymer and second ground prepolymer under agitation to a higher temperature than the first step until the desired degree of polymerization is achieved.

Process for a two stage melt polymerization for the production of polybenzimidazole

A process for the production of high molecular weight polybenzimidazole by one: providing a first reaction vessel; charging the reaction vessel with at least one aromatic hydrocarbon tetraamine, and a heterocylic ring making up the dicarboxylic component; heating the reactants under agitation in a substantially oxygen-free atmosphere with agitation until the agitator torque is about 1.5 times the torque before a rise in viscosity begins; terminating the agitation while continuing to heat the reaction mixture to about 230&#xb0; C. while allowing the reaction mass to foam; cooling the reaction mass to a friable foamed mass; crushing the friable foamed mass to obtain a ground prepolymer; and two: providing a second reaction vessel, the second reaction vessel being a high intensity reaction vessel; transferring the ground prepolymer to the second reaction vessel; heating the ground prepolymer under agitation to over 315&#xb0; C. at atmospheric pressure for a time of about 90 minutes.

Process for a two stage melt polymerization for the production of polybenzimidazole having an improved solid state polymerization

A process for a single-stage melt polymerization for the production of a high molecular weight polybenzimidazole which comprises the steps of: providing a reaction vessel having a means for agitation and a means for vacuum; charging the reaction vessel with reactants selected from: (A) a tetraaminiobiphenyl (TAB), and (B) a diphenyl isophthalate (DPIP); reacting the reactants under constant agitation and under a vacuum with an inert gas sweep; maintaining a reactant temperature which does not exceed 290&#xb0; C. under constant agitation allowing pressure in the vessel to increase, with an inert gas sweep until a phase change is achieved, when the temperature reaches 250&#xb0; C. pressure is increased to a slight positive pressure; and increase the reactant temperature and pressure within said reaction vessel while maintaining constant agitation and inert gas sweep, while maintaining a slight positive pressure. Preferably the vessel used in the instant invention is a high intensity reaction vessel.
