A fuel injection pumping apparatus for supplying fuel to an internal combustion engine includes a cylinder in which is located a fluid pressure operable piston. An outlet extends from one end of the cylinder and a valve controls the flow of fuel to the one of the cylinder from a fuel source. Also provided is an engine driven cam for actuating a plunger reciprocable in a bore. A second valve controls fluid flow from the bore to the other end of the cylinder and the valve is controlled by an electromagnetic actuator. Transducer means responsive to the position of the cam provides signals to control the actuator, the amount of fuel which flows into the one end of the cylinder being represented by the angular movement of the cam.

Fuel injection pumping apparatus

A fuel pumping apparatus for supplying fuel to an internal combustion engine is of the rotary distribution type in which the outward movement of pumping plungers is determined by stops, the axial position of the distribution member being adjustable to determine in conjunction with the stops the amount of fuel delivered by the apparatus. The plungers are actuated by cam lobes on a cam ring and two types of cam lobe are provided. One type of lobe provides the normal pumping action while the other type of lobe is shaped to provide an initial delivery of fuel by the apparatus in advance of the main quantity of fuel. The initial quantity can be varied by moving the cam ring angularly.

Fuel pumping apparatus

A fuel injection pumping apparatus of the axially slidable rotary distributor type includes a cup shaped member mounted on a drive shaft and a distributor member which as a bore containing pumping plungers. The outward movement of the plungers is controlled by a tapered surface on the interior of the cup shaped member which co-acts with complementary surfaces on cam followers, disposed between the plungers and a surrounding cam ring. The slots in the cup shaped member which accommodate the followers are of helical or like form and the distributor member is driven angularly by tongues which are secured to the distributor member and which locate in the slots. As the distributor member moves axially it is also moved angularly by the action of the helical slots so that the timing of delivery of fuel remains constant.

A fuel injection pumping apparatus comprises a rotary distributor member which is also axially slidable within a fixed sleeve. The distributor member is provided with a recess which communicates with a bore containing the pumping plungers. The recess is provided with mutually inclined leading and trailing edges which cover and uncover inlet ports and outlet ports as the member rotates. While an inlet port is in communication with the recess fuel is allowed to flow to the bore and when the inlet ports are covered and outlet port is uncovered to the recess fuel flows from the bore to the uncovered outlet port. The fuel quantity is varied by altering the axial position of the distributor member.

A liquid fuel injection pumping apparatus of the rotary distributor type has two forms of cam lobe on its cam ring. The first form of cam lobe is a pumping lobe which can effect inward movement of a plunger to achieve pumping of fuel and after the crest of the lobe has been passed allows outward movement of the plunger to lower the fuel pressure in the various passages in the apparatus. The other form of lobe is a holding lobe which while one plunger is being moved inwardly holds another plunger against movement. When the crest of the holding lobe is reached the associated plunger is allowed to move outwardly and this movement is arranged to take place shortly before the end of the inward movement of the plunger associated with a pumping lobe. The effect is to reduce the period towards the end of fuel delivery at which fuel is supplied at a reducing rate.

A fuel system for supplying fuel to a pair of injection nozzles of an engine comprises a pair of pumps which can only deliver half the maximum amount of fuel which may be required. Each pump supplies fuel to a respective nozzle when the fuel required is less than half and the system includes a pair of valves which are operated to allow both pumps to deliver fuel through one nozzle when more than half the maximum amount of fuel is required, the pumps then being operated at twice the previous rate to supply fuel to the nozzles in turn.

Fuel system for engines

A fuel injection pump for supplying fuel to an internal combustion engine includes a plunger reciprocable within a bore by cams on a cam ring. Fuel is supplied to the bore by a throttle. A first valve is provided which connects a point intermediate the throttle and the bore with a drain. A second valve is provided to ensure that the pressure applied to the outer end of the plunger is above said drain pressure. When the first valve is opened the pressure acting at the outer end of the plunger will move it inwardly to ensure that it cannot be actuated by the cam.

Pumping systems

A fuel injection pumping apparatus comprises a rotary distributor member having a bore containing a plunger which is moved inwardly to cause delivery of fuel by the apparatus by cam lobes formed on the internal surface of a cam ring. The cam lobes are regularly spaced but in order to balance the forces acting on the distributor member the bore houses a further plunger which is held against outward movement by means of a roller which engages the internal surface of a pair of stop rings mounted in the housing of the apparatus.

A fuel injection system includes a pumping plunger contained in a cylinder and actuated in a direction to pump fuel from the cylinder by energization of an electromagnetic device including an armature. Stop means is provided to limit the movement of the armature when the device is energized and this includes a high rate spring constituted by a dished washer which is compressed by the armature during the final movement thereof. The washer is sufficiently strong to urge the armature in the opposite direction against the magnetic forces produced by the device, by an amount sufficient to bring about a reduction in the pressure in the cylinder.

Fuel injection systems

A fuel injection system includes a pumping plunger which is actuated by an actuating means to displace fuel through a valve controlled outlet. In order to reduce the fuel pressure quickly at the end of the stroke of the plunger valve means is provided which opens due to continued movement of the pumping plunger after the stroke of the actuating means has been halted by a stop.

A solenoid valve including an armature having axially spaced circumferential grooves and magnetizable discs extending into the grooves. The discs are formed in at least two parts to permit assembly of the discs into the grooves and are offset in the grooves. A winding is provided which when energized polarizes the discs so that adjacent discs have opposite magnetic polarity.

Solenoid construction

A fuel injection system includes a first piston which can be subjected to fluid under pressure to cause displacement of a further piston, which causes delivery of fuel through an outlet. In addition a second piston is provided which is located in a cylinder communicating with the cylinder containing the first piston. The second piston is of smaller diameter and can also be subjected to fluid under pressure. When this occurs the second piston is moved and transfers fluid under pressure into the cylinder containing the first piston to achieve a limited delivery of fuel through the outlet. Valve means is provided to control the application of fluid pressure to the second piston and also the first piston.
