Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, a processing system of a communication node routing data packets for a first streaming session between a viewer node of a plurality of viewer nodes and a content streaming server through the communication node without interrupting delivery of content data to the viewer node, establishing a second streaming session with the content streaming server to receive the content data, creating a first and second replacement connections by imitating a connections with the content streaming server and the viewer node, receiving a control packet over the second streaming session from the content streaming server, and splitting the first streaming session responsive to receiving the control packet. A virtual provider edge server may include different modules that implement a hybrid provider edge. A flow detection module may sample received traffic through a server and adaptively detect flows to be offloaded. An offloading module may be an SDN controller that controls the flow tables of a switch that data traffic is offloaded to.

Implementing provider edge with hybrid packet processing appliance

A multimedia conferencing service uses accessible-forwarding-plane network elements such as OpenFlow&#xae; controllers and OpenFlow&#xae;-enabled switches. A conferencing server receives a conference subscription request including a network address of a L2/L3 signaling server, and connects to an accessible-forwarding-plane controller to control an accessible-forwarding-plane switch. Flow tables and group tables are managed to classify traffic with minimum table usage and update frequency. Media channels are established between clients through the OpenFlow&#xae;-enabled switches, relieving bottlenecks at the conferencing server.
