The disclosure is related to systems and methods for data detection and device optimization. In one example, a device may include an interface circuit for data transmission, and an interface detection module adapted to determine a characteristic of a data transfer over the interface circuit. The device may implement an optimization profile for the device based upon the determined characteristic. Further, a device may be configured to measure a data transfer rate, determine an interface type based on the data transfer rate, and implement an optimization profile based on the interface type. The optimization profile may optimize a system for power consumption, performance, or other benefits.

Data detection and device optimization

A data storage device can employ a transducing head that accesses data stored on a data storage medium as directed by a controller. In response to experiencing a power disruption, the controller can predict at least one performance metric lost due to the power disruption and subsequently compensate for the power disruption by assuming the at least one predicted performance metric is correct.

Data storage device with power loss adaptation

A mapping table is modified to match one or more specified storage conditions of data stored in or expected to be stored in one or more logical block address ranges to physical addresses within a storage drive having performance characteristics that satisfy the specified storage conditions. For example, the performance characteristics may be a reliability of the physical location within the storage drive or a data throughput range of read/write operations. Existing data is moved and/or new data is written to physical addresses on the storage media possessing the performance characteristic(s), according to the mapping table. Further, a standard seeding or a seeding override for the re-mapped logical block addresses can prevent read operations from inadvertently reading incorrect physical addresses corresponding to the re-mapped logical block addresses.

The invention provides a method for detection of inflammatory disease in a subject that comprises assaying a test sample of peripheral blood from the subject for a marker of DNA damage. An elevated amount of marker present in the test sample compared to control sample is indicative of inflammatory disease activity, including sub-clinical inflammation. The method can be adapted for quantitatively monitoring the efficacy of treatment of inflammatory disease in a subject. Markers of DNA damage include single- and/or double-stranded breaks in leukocytes, oxidative DNA damage in leukocytes, or a marker of nitric oxide oxidative activity (protein nitrosylation in leukocytes). The inflammatory disease can be inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease). The invention may also be used for detection of other types of inflammatory disease, such as non-immune intestinal inflammatory disease (diverticulitis, pseudomembranous colitis), autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, uveitis, vasculitis), or non-immune lung diseases (asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease, and interstitial pneumonitis). This unexpected discovery of markers of genotoxicity present in circulating leukocytes enables detection of inflammation occurring at a localized site with a relatively simple and minimally invasive assay using peripheral blood.

An aspect of the present disclosure relates to scanning reassigned data storage locations. In one example, a reassignment table is accessed to identify a deallocated data storage location and scan the deallocated data storage location for media defects.

An exemplary method includes implementing a data operation for a portion of data and detecting a data error during the data operation. The method further includes obtaining an indication of a vibration condition associated with a device with which the data operation is performed and implementing a temporary reassignment of the portion of data based on the vibration condition.

A magnetic medium has permanently defined boundaries between tracks and a consistent surface smoothness. The crystallographic structure of the magnetic medium is modified at the track boundaries, so the grains of the magnetic thin film permanently take on a relatively non-magnetic structure as compared to the grains of the magnetic thin film within the tracks. Servo patterns on the magnetic medium may be permanently defined at the same time the track boundaries are permanently defined. Laser ablation, laser heating to an amorphous structure, photolithography, perpendicular deposition, ion milling, reverse sputtering, and ion implantation can be used individually or in combination, with either the magnetic layer or the underlayer, to create the relatively non-magnetic areas.

A tester for use in detecting asperities in a disc surface of a storage system includes a load arm having a proximal end and a distal end. The distal end of the load arm is positioned adjacent the disc surface. A slider is carried on the distal end of the load arm adjacent the disc surface. A thermal sensor is coupled to the slider and provides an electrical output in response to a thermal input due to interaction between the thermal sensor and asperity on the disc surface. Detection circuitry coupled to the thermal sensor detects the electrical output from the thermal sensor and responsively provides a detection output indicating the occurrence of an asperity on the disc surface.
