An expert system may be utilized for providing and receiving interactive, computer-implemented support services related to chemical processing units. The expert system may include a knowledge base that contains information coded in the form of rules, decision trees, and logic and a database that stores and handles various types of information related to the expert system. A query component receives a query that may be a problem, a performance issue, or a training request selected from a list or diagram or otherwise generated by a customer. An answer component utilizes the knowledge base, the database, an external database, and/or an expert to provide one or more answers to the query. A question and answer session may be initiated by the expert system in order to gain further information and detail related to the query. Supplemental information and the identified answers may be provided to the customer.

A process for removing H,S and mercaptans from a hydrocarbon stream is disclosed. A hydrocarbon stream such as a LPG stream is contacted with a weakly basic stream, e.g., a sodium bicarbonate stream in order to extract the H,S and mercaptans from the hydrocarbon stream into the basic stream. The basic stream is now treated in a reactor containing a sulfide oxidizing microorganism in order to convert the H,S to sulfur and the mercaptans to disulfides. Finally, the sulfur and disulfides are separated from the basic aqueous stream which can be recycled and used to treat a fresh hydrocarbon stream. The treated hydrocarbon stream is purified to the point that it passes the copper strip test, while the purified basic stream contains less than 0.08 g/l of elemental sulfur.

Process for removing sulfur compounds from hydrocarbon streams

A process is disclosed for producing very low sulfur content hydrocarbon streams by contacting a hydrocarbon feedstream with an aqueous alkaline treatment stream which has been regenerated by the biological conversion of sulfur compounds to elemental sulfur. The process is characterized by the step of contacting the partially regenerated aqueous treatment stream with a hydrocarbon wash stream to remove low levels of residual elemental sulfur suspended in the partially regenerated treatment stream.

The process involves contacting a sour middle distillate hydrocarbon fraction which contains mercaptans first with the solid base and then, in the presence of an oxidizing agent and a polar compound, with the supported metal chelate. The process is unique in that both the catalyst and the base are solid materials and that the solid base is in a separate fixed bed from the supported metal chelate.

Process for sweetening a sour hydrocarbon fraction using a supported

A catalyst and a process for using the catalyst have been developed. The catalyst is a metal chelate dispersed on a basic support which is a combination of a solid base and a secondary component. The solid base can be a solid solution of metal oxides and/or a layered double hydroxide (LDH) and the secondary component can be calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, calcium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide. The process involves contacting a sour hydrocarbon fraction which contains mercaptans with the catalyst in the presence of an oxidizing agent and a polar compound. Examples of these polar compounds are water and alcohols, with methanol being especially preferred. The process is unique in that the solid solution or LDH are solid bases which eliminates the need for a liquid base. Optionally, an onium compound may be used as a catalyst promoter.

Catalyst for sweetening a sour hydrocarbon fraction containing metal

Naphthenic acids may be efficiently and conveniently removed from liquid hydrocarbon feedstocks by passing such feedstocks through a bed of certain metal oxide solid solutions related to hydrotalcites. The removal of naphthenic acids is an important adjunct to sweetening sour feedstocks and is particularly applicable to kerosines whose acid numbers may range as high as about 0.8. The metal oxide solid solutions of our invention show high adsorption capacity and can readily remove at least 95% of the naphthenic acids present in a liquid hydrocarbon feedstock.
